This is a challenging review, based on the nightly rate. I received a fantastic nightly rate of less than 40.00 (Orbitz). For that rate, my average rating of the property is too low. But since, the advertised rates, with resort fee are closer to 80 dollars per night, I feel that average (3) is about right. If I could, I would give it a 3.5 overall, but raise it to 4 for the rate I paid.
Staff
Friendly and very competent (especially front desk, maintenance and housekeeping). The grounds are well maintained. The rooms are clean.
The hotel reception and restaurant/bar facilities were always almost spotless. The one exception. The pool. Water quality was good. But the pool floor had a considerable amount of dirt and debris. Security personnel were visible and effective. .
Facility
It is dated, but as mentioned above, the buildings and grounds, with the exception of the pool are very well maintained. Pool waterfall was only operating when a large group including many young children arrived for an overnight stay. During my 9 days at Travellers, the jacuzzi was not working. Rooms are comfortable and clean. AC and fan worked well. Restaurant deck dining has a beautiful tree shaded setting, just a few feet from the water.
The beach is somewhat narrow, but the white sand is very nice. The very gradual increase in
the depth of the sea makes for an excellent swimming experience for all ages. .
A few negatives. Two touring boats daily parked right on the beach in the prime swimming areas. And of course, the beach vendors. To be fair, on only one occasion was a vendor rude. But, it is a steady stream of locals, sometimes quite loudly, urging you to purchase their goods or services. My thoughts ranged wildly during my stay from..., they're only trying to eke out a living and it's part of the Negril experience......., to, I sure could occasionally use some peace and quiet. My solution, was my mp3 and headphones. Perhaps, rude on my part...but it sure helped to partially drown out the constant "sales calls". Another tip may state the obvious. For early risers. Sunrise walks along the beach are peaceful and a great way to start the day.
Travellers also features two to three karaoke nights a week. On one of the three, the music was jaw droppingly loud until just before 1 a m. I registered my only complaint of my stay. I noticed, perhaps by coincidence, that the next two karaoke nights finished earlier and the decibel level on the speakers had been cut appreciably.
Food
Food at Travellers was good to sometimes very good. Prices fairly competitive with other restaurants along the beach.
My favorite other restaurants included Lingahs by the Sea, Kuyaba, Angelas and Chef Paul's
jerk chicken stand a couple hundred yards from the Travellers location. Paul is a very engaging guy who prepares some very good entrees.
Overall, Travellers was an enjoyable experience. In my view, at the rate I paid, Travellers should receive "best budget travel deal status".
Room Tip: Early to bed? Ask for a room as far away as possible from the bar/restaurant (kareoke)
