“Legends Resort - A Travel Agent's Perspective”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

I have traveled to Jamaica at least once every year for the past several years. I try to stay in a different area each time so I can experience different hotels. I have wanted to stay on Seven Mile Beach ever since I got to spend some time there last year. I selected Legends because it was inexpensive....they gave me a good deal for being an agent and January is a perfect time to escape the NJ blahness of winter.

ExplorerJamaica is awesome for transfers and day trips. I have used them a few times and their hospitality is much appreciated.

Legends is a perfectly situated, small hotel in Negril. I knew when we booked it that the reviews were a bit all over the place. Red flags for me are safety, cleanliness and food poisoning. I am happy to report that I always felt safe, the rooms were clean and the food was decent.

We were greated by the desk clerk who had a bit of a quirky personality. I wouldn't say it was an attitude, I just think she was trying to be funny but she wasn't. She told my friend and I that we were not fun enough to be on the beach side.....huh? She was pulling our leg but it was hard to tell that initially. Finally, she told us we were on the beach side but that the room was not ready. We were required to leave an imprint of my credit card with $100 held on it. Not really sure why because we couldn't sign anything back to the room. We left our bags in the lobby and grabbed some lunch and look around. We took a walk and got stuck at a little tiki bar when it monsooned on us. They had THE best dirty bananas! It's maybe a 3 minute walk from Legends going toward Margaritaville (which is a very far walk!)

OK, so the good things about staying at Legends:
* perfect location - close to everything and across the street from Times Square for shopping.
* cleanliness - while the hotel is a little dated, our room was cleaned well every day.
* big momma - greeted you with a smile every time she saw you.
* great water pressure in the shower......this does count for some people!
* the vendors on the beach - we made friends with mostly every vendor who tried to sell us stuff on the beach. while many people think that they are intrusive, i think they added to our experience.
* shopping brought to you - we could buy everything from fresh lobster, to fruit, jewelry, nuts, patties.....we did not have to leave our beach chairs if we didn't want to!
* massage by Nadine at the hotel......I got a deep tissue and she really worked on the knots in my shoulders!
* michael the safety officer - always polite and happy to help us get chairs.

The not-so-good:
* the beach - Seven Mile Beach itself is gorgeous. Legends' beach is about the size of a postage stamp. Guests are literally sitting within inches of each other. Thankfully Kuyaba is not that strict on property lines. We ended up moving our chairs closer to them to get away from some people
* the food - not worth the all-inclusive at all. Now that I know how easy and cheap it is to eat on the beach, I would skip the AI next time.
* the drinks - way too strong.....I know, who complains about that, right? Well, it was like they topped everything with rum and it was just too much.
* the "all-inclusive" - wasn't really AI. Many of the drinks were on the "not included" list.
* the beds - are like sleeping on concrete
* no beach towels
* AC - we had an older unit over our door - room 406. The condensation leaked from outside the door to inside the door and probably came into the room about 3 feet. Housekeeping only gives you 2 towels so it was hard to clean up. After the 3rd night, they left us 2 extra towels for the flood.
* charge for the safe - we ended up not getting one.
* inconsistent customer service - some employees were nice while others were not as nice. sometimes it felt like i was bothering them.

Some must-dos while you are there:
* go to ricks for sunset and watching the divers
* go to margaritaville - yes, it's way overpriced but it's still fun!
* get to know the locals - talk to them, they are great people! ask them questions, it's all about respect there.
* walk the beach - it's gorgeous! Be prepared to be bombarded with vendors. Just tell them no thank you or maybe tomorrow. Don't ignore them.
* buy a raft and just float - it was so relaxing and beautiful!

All in all, I had a great time, but it's difficult not to there. Chances are, I would not stay at Legends again, not because it was a bad place to stay, I would like to experience something different....possibly Samsara. We drove passed it on our way to Ricks - it looked ok from the road. It would be really difficult to give up Seven Mile Beach though!

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, stay on the garden side.

“Great beach!”

We stayed with a group at Legends for a decent price. We paid for what we got. Rooms were dingy, air conditioner worked half the time, our shower was missing the shower head. But, it's not the rooms we spend time in, the beach was amazing. Hurry to get a chair in the earlier hours. Spent a day at Samsara which was nice but glad we chose Legends for the great beach. Was a longer ride from Montego Bay airport but got to see a lot of the locals and towns on the way. I'd recommend for those that are laid back and on a budget. If your looking for luxury don't go there. I would go back again sometime.

“Incredible”

My family and i stayed at the Legends from December 7 - 14, 2011. Ages range from 11-53 in the family. Not one of us had anythin less than a great time. Big Momma's food is incredible although having bacon in the morning or a roast at night would have made it perfect. The Security Guard Michael is the nicest guy he will do anything for you to have a perfect day. The waitresses are awesome and housekeeping will do anything in their power to make your stay in your room perfect. I would give 5 stars but they did have a problem with the hot water for a day or two but hey nothing and no place is perfect. Legends thank you for the best vacation ever and Big Momma , Gianna misses you.

First off I did not pick this hotel my Friend did, I was pleasantly surprised. Arriving at night, I was not sure what to expect, however check in was a breeze. I woke up and open my door to the beautiful birds and my neighbors playing reggae music. After taking a walk around I realized I was around everything I want to experience. Real Jamaican Jerk, Smoke, Culture, Weather, Feeling Safe. I felt very safe and thought the staff did an excellent job making me feel this way. "everything going to be alright mon" Mike the beach guys was great, if you're going to book a tour he knows everyone. A couple words that sum up my stay YA MON! RESPECT!.

Room Tip: Stay on the beach side

“YA MON!”

We did our homework before we booked this Resort for our first time in Jamaica. We chose Legends for price and location and we booked beach side and king bed. When we arrived, we were greeted by Rianna at reception, who informed us that our reservation had been lost, but she found it again, funny girl! Turned out she was very friendly and efficient, took good care of us. We did not expect luxury, but found large clean room, hot water, working AC, clean towels daily, good bed. The best feature is the beach, very clean water and safe for all ages.
We found the staff very friendly and helpful, they treat you as you treat them - with respect. Of course they also like your tips.
The food was not elaborate, but very good and even after 2 weeks there were new things on the menu. Big Mama knows how to dish it out, her spoonfuls are FULL and she goes the extra mile to please you. All fruit and vegetables are grown locally, there was fresh fish every day and usually 2 other kinds of meat. We also got addicted to the Red Label house wine, it has a sweet sherry taste. The bar is open from 10-10 and the coffee is also very good!
Michael makes sure there are plenty of chairs on the beach and he is an expert on placing umbrella's in the sand, so you don't get sunburned. When we were away and got rained on, he made sure everyones towels and bags were saved a few times, thanks Michael! We all appreciated how he protects us from over-enthousiastic peddlers on the beach.
You need to take a snorkeling trip to the island nearby and include the lobster lunch, to us this was a perfect day. Another day trip we did was to YS falls, black river boat trip and the Appleton rum factory. It makes for a long, but very satisfying day and it is nice to see the country side. We booked this at Legends and it included lunch, for $ 125 p.p.
We felt that Negril has lots of Jamaican flavor, we also liked the added bonus of going to Samsara - Legends' sister resort. There is no beach, but you can jump off the rocks (or enter the water by ladder) and do some snorkeling. They also have 2 pools and it is much quieter there if you need a break from the busy beach.
A free shuttle takes you there and back, you can also go for dinner. Rick's cafe is also worth visiting, you can see daring cliff divers and have a drink at the bar.
We felt very safe on the beach at all times, there are many ganga sellers for the tourists who like to buy it....but they respect a NO MON! with a smile.
We enjoyed the whole experience, thanks Jamaicans, ONE LOVE!

Room Tip: Rooms at garden side are quieter, there is always someone to help you cross the road. Beach side is...
