We discovered the Caves on concierge.com and confirmed our decision to spend part of our honeymoon there after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor. It was everything we'd hoped for. Quiet, friendly, secluded, and absolutely sparkling with laid-back luxury.
THE ROOMS
We stayed in Sea Turtle. I can't imagine a better cottage for a romantic trip. Every night we fell asleep to the soothing sounds of the ocean and every morning we awoke to a view of the unbelievably blue sea just outside the room (and over the edge of a cliff). Sea Turtle is, I believe, the closest cottage to the water. If not, it's a very close runner up and has a perfect view. The cottages are mostly divided into top and bottom units. Sea Turtle is a bottom unit. Although in the past only some rooms had air conditioning, all of them do now. We didn't need it most of the time because the ocean breeze cooled the room. I nearly always need AC, as does my husband. Every night at turn-down, the housekeeping staff lit candles in the room and warm, scented oil diffusers. A cd-player played gentle sounds upon our arrival and whenever we felt like some music. The room came with rosy mood lighting and the bathroom had a large tub perfect for sharing. The refrigerator was stocked with beer, soda, crackers and cookies. The mattress was very comfortable and I fell asleep immediately the second my head touched the mattress on the first day and almost missed dinner (I was also pretty exhausted from the wedding and the previous week). Luckily, I woke in time to eat.
THE FOOD
The food was amazing. You should understand that it is not gourmet. It's very authentic Jamaican fare and it's delicious. For breakfast, you can order standard choices like pancakes or can opt for the traditional Jamaican breakfast, which I ordered every morning. Lunch was a different set of choices every day, as was dinner. I don't eat red meat or pork and I had plenty of options to choose from at each meal. We spent the rest of our honeymoon at some very highly rated resorts and hotels and preferred the food at the Caves. It was simple and unpretentious, but perfectly prepared. It was exactly in tune with the Caves itself-- laid back and unassuming, but indulgent. The food and drinks are all inclusive, so be ready to eat up.
Activities
We didn't have the best luck with activities. Because of rough waters and high winds, our cave dinner (which is highly reccommended-- read other reviews) was canceled and we couldn't do water activities for part of our trip. In addition, I had to cut my snorkeling trip short because I was thrown against the wall of a cave by a strong wave. However, the Caves set up a beautiful dinner outside our room at the edge of the cliffside complete with rows of candles up and down the pathway and lining the side of the cliff to make up for our canceled cave dinner. My husband braved the rough waters and saw many tropical fish, a sea snake, and fruit bats on the snorkeling trip. I didn't do a cliff jump, but my husband tried all three and had a blast. He also did a walking trip to the nearby lighthouse and got some great pictures, and took a day trip into Negril to soak up some local culture. I'd say skip Rick's-- it's pretty much just a tourist attraction and the Caves is just gorgeous and magical. If you're going for romance and serenity, stay on the grounds. I also got a massage at the cliffside overlooking the sea. It was beautiful, but seriously windy. I would suggest rescheduling if its a rough weather day, although the massage itself was very relaxing.
GENERAL
It's windy. The Caves is situated on the top of a cliff overlooking the ocean. Dress accordingly. You'll have to take a taxi or rent bikes to get to an actual beach, but there is ocean access. The jumps aren't as intimidating as they look. Finally, don't come here if you're looking to party. Not only will you probably not get what you're looking for, you'll most likely annoy everyone else. It's a perfect place for couples looking for a romantic getaway. I'd recommend it for honeymoons and similar trips. It's not a family resort. I think the Caves does weddings, but unless it's a very, very small intimate gathering, I would recommend checking out the grounds first. It is very beautiful, but there aren't a lot of wide open spaces.
That's about it. We had a wonderful time and do plan on coming back. I hope this review is helpful for those considering a trip.
