I stayed at The Spa Retreat in Negril for 10 days in December. I was looking for a unique getaway experience, but something a little different than the typical "big hotel" all inclusive trips which I've done before. I traveled here with 2 other guys, and we were looking for a combination of relaxation, fun, as well as the chance to experience the famous Jamaican culture. We definitely got all of this and my expectations were thoroughly surpassed in every way by The Spa Retreat.
When I first arrived I was speechless with how beautiful this resort really is. From top to bottom, it has been meticulously crafted with an artisan's attention to detail. Although the photos I saw beforehand looked quite attractive, they can't even come close to the experience of being there. The feeling of walking through the sweeping curved lines of the white stone pathways and waterfront is just amazing. The breezy flow when strolling along the cottage paths and exploring the strikingly beautiful sea-wall was just so relaxing and enjoyable. As gorgeous as this resort is during the daytime and the epic sunsets that seem to last forever, I was most taken with just how brilliant the setting is during the evenings. The white stone paths catch all of the ambient light and almost seem to glow in the dark. Couple this with the most incredible starry nights, a perfect view of the lights on 7 mile beach, and glowing tiki torches, it was really quite stunning. As a photographer, I couldn't stop taking pictures. When it was time to retreat to my room, the fine details in the woodworking of the bedposts, armoire, and windows helped to make me feel cozy. Every night I would sink into my bed in complete air-conditioned comfort and awaken to the sea-breeze through my windows and my own double door patio looking out to the ocean. I enjoyed just watching the variety of boats going by each day!
I could go on and on about the beauty and comfort of this resort, but what really made our trip special was the level of service we got from the friendly and helpful staff. For starters, we ate like kings. The first meal we had was surf and turf with fillet mignon and grilled lobster tail. It was totally amazing, but that was only the beginning. Each day when we made our plans, we were able to tell the chef in advance what time we would like to eat dinner and what we were in the mood for. He was able to suggest several delicious meals for us as well. One particularly memorable meal was some sort of Jamaican curry fish that was really spectacular. Overall the quality of the food is excellent, and it was very comforting knowing that we would be well fed each day.
Although it was tempting to stay at the resort all the time (tanning, snorkeling, eating, etc) being 3 guys of course we were looking for some fun and excitement as well! The staff here was very helpful to coordinate whatever activities we wanted to do. Some highlights included golfing at Negril Hills, a guided motorcycle tour of the hills and a fresh spring, and of course exploring 7 mile beach and making a visit to watch the cliff divers at Rick's Cafe. Right across the way, there is a very friendly local bar with a pool table. We enjoyed just chatting with the locals and other travelers and tasting Tayon's jerk chicken! The Spa Retreat also coordinated for us to have a membership at a really nice gym nearby. We played squash, tennis, used the weight room/sauna and The Spa Retreat always made sure we had a good driver to help us get around. This was very much appreciated.
In fact, one thing I definitely noticed here was that The Spa Retreat had a very good reputation amongst all of the local attractions and services in Negril. Whenever we mentioned where we were staying, it felt like we got a little bit of extra special treatment. The resort clearly has good relationships with the local community; I felt like whenever we went out to do various activities, people wanted to take good care of us especially because we were guests at The Spa. To me, this is a sign of service excellence that goes beyond what is typical. If you search hard enough, you can surely find other beautiful resort getaways - but its this extra level of attention to detail that is very rare. Although we were only there for a short time, we truly felt at home. Everyone at The Spa Retreat was very perceptive in knowing how to make sure we enjoyed ourselves each day, whether we were relaxing on the resort or venturing out into Negril.
I can't say enough good things about my stay here, my friends and I really had an incredible experience. I will definitely be recommending The Spa Retreat to my friends, and I can't wait to go back someday. I got exactly what I was looking for and more. To anyone with Jamaica as their destination, you can't find a place like this anywhere else on the island, it's really amazing! No matter what kind of vacation experience you're looking for, they are capable of accommodating you and making sure you have a perfect getaway.
