I stayed at Sunset At The Palms with a group of ten others from 1/14-1/21/12. I found the resort in the AAA Book and after doing research on Trip Advisor, determined that it was time to forego a larger resort and give the smaller guy a whirl. We couldn't have made a better decision!! The website doesn't do this property justice - the vegetation is absolutely beautiful and the huts are, although more rustic than an upscale hotel room, very comfortable.
What you read here about check-in is authentic....you walk right into a small, open area with two desks and very friendly staff to welcome you. You are immediately given a cool cloth and a tasty punch, which - by the way - is badly needed after an arduous bus ride from the airport. That was the most painful part of the trip - the commute from the airport. Not to go off track, but when you arrive at the airport and after clearing customs - you register at a desk in order to secure the bus transfer. Once you're on the bus, if it's not full - you wait for others to come and board. Rather annoying, given that we had been traveling ALL day and the only thing we wanted was to get to the resort. During the bus trip, we stopped at a store where we could buy souvenirs and sample Jamaican gelatto...which was good. Then we had to make several stops to drop others off at their resort, which also extended the trip to our own. I think the entire ride was 1 3/4 hours, including the stops.
Anyway - back to check-in. Our reservations were made nearly a year in advance and after continuing research throughout the year, we requested huts in the 400 block. And..given that we were a pretty large group (11 total people, 6 huts), we wanted to be together. Once the check-in process was over for all of us and we were comparing where we were...we found that we were placed all over the property and only a couple of us were near each other. We all went our separate ways to get situated in our rooms. When we got to ours (617) which was right along the street line...it was noisy. BUT - we ended up not moving because the shutters in our hut had glass underneath, NOT screens. No one else in our group had glass and the other huts we could move to did not either. I am an extremely light sleeper and figured it'd be better to stay where we were. Turns out...I think we made the right decision. Everyone else seems satisfied with their huts, with the exception of one who had lizards in her room on several occasions and another who said they only had 'warm' water, as opposed to 'hot'. Not sure the water issues were ever resolved..and what can you do about lizards scurrying around? The front desk sent maintenance guys over armed with brooms to see if they could encourage them outside...by the end of the trip my friend saw them running across the wall and just hoped they were heading outside! Other than that...we were all fine and relatively happy in our huts!
Food - super good. Very similar to Mexico in that there was always something edible to eat and it tasted good. We've had MUCH worse (Dominican Republic & Costa Rica), so we were very relieved. We never entered the speciality restaurant - looked at the menu and determined we'd be better off at the buffet. They had Jamaican night, Japanese night, Italian night...can't remember if there was anything else but they did a stand-up job recreating dishes. Pasta bar was always reliable and it was there most nights - not all. Breakfast was always good - and between lunch at the buffet and lunch on the beach - we were always well fed. I will say that there are not as many choices, but if you keep in mind you are at a smaller resort, it doesn't matter! Best thing about the buffet...because the resort is small, there were NEVER long lines to wait in to eat. It was great!
Continuing on the 'smaller resort' piece....it was absolutely fantastic not having to take turns getting up at dawn to save chairs at the pool or on the beach. It was the most relaxing vacation we've ever had because we got up at our leisure, ate breakfast between 8:30-9:30 and then headed to wherever we decided we wanted to park our butts for the day. We spent more time at the beach than the pool, but both were wonderful. There was always entertainment on the beach (yes, must admit we got very sick of listening to the same songs day after day), but it sure as hell beat being at home and if that's how the entertainers make their living...we always put $$ in their baskets! I'd read a lot of stuff about being bothered by beach vendors, but honestly - we never had a problem when in our chairs and if approached, simply said no thank you and that was the end of it. If you walk the beach you may get pressured a bit more to take advantage of jet skis or to purchase souvenirs, but it's a small price to pay to walk down a beautiful beach and look at that gorgeous water!
Entertainment - this is the biggest problem with the resort and the main reason why I didn't give it the highest rating. We were 'lucky' enough to have entertainment every night, but it certainly wasn't always good. Karoake night was great and they should have it more often - under the pretense that the guy runnng it understands that it's more about the guests getting up to sing as opposed to him performing. There was another band (with a girl named Stephanie) that was great - and they played two nights too. The other band (it wasn't memorable) was terrible. To boot - when the entertainment was good, it ended too early. Couldn't figure out if it's because the resort is a small property - but that's doubtful because we were able to hear the entertainment at an abutting resort, so what's the difference? Either way - this was a common thread throughout other reviews, so one would think if the resort reads these, that it would be an easy fix. Can't help but wonder why they don't do anything about it!?!
Excursions - only a few from our group took the catamaran ride where it stopped to snorkel, shop and then hit Rick's Cafe. They had a great time and were glad they did it. The rest of us hired a cab (secured by the resort) and headed to Rick's Cafe because any research indicates that although it's a total tourist spot...you really shouldn't miss seeing the cliff divers (participating if you're adventurous enough) and watching the sunset. Definitely something to see and not missed. Plus...the drink choices were more diverse at the bar compared to the resort, so it was nice to get out for a few hours.
Bars - there's one on the beach, one right off the lobby (Martini Bar - they really should have a martini menu) and one at the pool. Another minor complaint...other resorts we've been to have 'drink menus' with specialty options. They looked at me like I had two heads when I asked but they were willing to make whatever you wanted if you told them how to make it. Not a lot of top shelf stuff...and we ended up going to the gas station down the street that sells a small variety of alcohol...and ended up getting a couple of bottles. Then..on our way back from Rick's Cafe, we also stopped at a grocery store that sells alcohol and again bought stuff to bring back with us. So...we were always armed with other choices which mixed well with the resort's punch!
Service - superb. Other than one grouchy bartender (whom shall remain nameless), the staff was wonderful. If we had a complaint they tried to take care of it right away, being at a small resort truly did make a difference in the service we were provided and towards the end of our trip when we discovered one of our flights was canceled, the front desk was even willing to lend us their cell phones if we had difficulty with ours. They let us sit at one of the desks, on hold with the airline forever, making new arrangements for such a large group. Free internet service was helpful - only one computer (with no printer) that everyone at the resort had to share, but...it was definitely manageable.
All in all...I definitely recommend this resort and would not hesitate to return. Everything was organized, service was superb, food was great, property was beautiful (beach being across the street did not pose a problem AT ALL) and the accommodations were very comfortable. The reasons why I did not give Sunset At The Palms the highest rating was: our requests for certain huts were not honored (makes me wonder if it's 'cuz we didn't arrive until after 7 p.m. due to a long travel day) and the lack of good entertainment with early stop times. Easy stuff to get beyond and certainly things that the resort can act upon to provide their guests with a better experience. Go and pay them a visit - you'll be very glad you did!
