“Moves Cottage is awesome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2011

Moves Cottage is litteraly a dream come true for our Jamaican base camp. We found it comfortable, affordable, and with everything we needed. The grounds are beautiful, the house charming, the veranda perfect. The location was one of my favorite things. Nestled among the local people, we had the oppertunity to make friends, and enjoy this beautiful, peaceful, respectful culture. The owner is well respected in the area, and as a result, we felt always safe and welcome. The cottage is a short and enjoyable stroll to the sea. It is up on the cliffs, yet swimming is available via ladders at several locations. The beach is a short and fun taxi ride away. My favorite beach bar is Chances. Locally owned and operated it has great service, awesome stretch of beach, and local flavor.
Yet, you don't need to venture to the beach often, as West End Negril offers many shops, bars, and intertainment just minutes walk from Moves. The sunset from the cliffs is just beyond words in beauty. Oh, how we felt at home, and will stay at Moves next time we can visit Jamaica.

“Wonderful stay, clean and spacious, friendly neighborhood”

I stayed with my family of 4 for a week in Moves Cottage over the holidays this December. We had been to Negril several times before and stayed both in the cliffs and on the beach at resort hotels. Moves Cottage is in the cliffs of Negril, a few miles from the beach, which we liked, since the cliffs are beautiful and have some of the best restaurants. We liked getting away from the touristy beach area to a nice quiet cottage at night, and I thought that staying in a friendly neighboorhood like this was a great way to absorb the Jamaican culture.

The cottage has two bedrooms and a large kitchen/living room area with futons, and one bathroom. It suppose it could sleep about 6 to 8 people comfortably. Everything was wonderfully clean when we arrived and John, the owner, cleaned and changed the sheets and towels. The kitchen has a gas oven/stove, microwave, a coffee maker, blender, and a refridgerator/freezer. Also provided were pots and pans and other cooking utensils. I was great because it was fully stocked, just like home, even down to the sugar for coffee.

The tv just got two local channels, but now there is a nice variety of DVD's there, and it was great to pop in a movie and make some popcorn after coming back tired from a day in the sun at the beach. Also, the living room/kitchen and the larger bedroom both have nice electric air conditioners, which easily cooled the cottage pretty quickly.

The yard is beautiful, and we enjoyed sitting on the veranda taking in the warm air in the mornings. There are a few mini-marts and many small cafe's that are just a short walk away on the cliff road. It was nice to walk and have a nice breakfast or lunch and stock up on snacks. We walked to the Negril lighthouse one day, which was beautiful, and also to Rick's Cafe to jump from the cliff.

Overall, we really didn't miss staying on the beach, because its very easy and reasonable to catch a cab to the beach at any time. We really enjoyed having all the added amenities of a cottage, rather than your average hotel room. It is great to have the option to cook your own meal or blend a drink. Don't shy away from Moves Cottage because its not a popular resort, because its really a great property and offers way more for your money.

“Great cottage in a quiet location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 May 2009

I booked Moves for a 2 wk holiday for myself and my fiance. We wanted a self-catering place, where we could spend some quality time together, slightly away from the main touristy part of Negril.

Moves was a bit hard to find at first, we thought we'd gone wrong when we drove up what amounted to scarcely more than a dirt track but once we'd phoned Joe the caretaker (very friendly and helpful) we found out that we were in the right place. Luckily he showed us an easier way to and from the cottage the next day.

The cottage was fairly large, especially compared to hotel rooms which is our usual accommodation. The cottage was clean, the housekeeper came in twice a week, and was happy to either clean around us, or to wait if we were on our way out.

There is a small local shop just down the road and a great little hotel (Seascape) who were more than happy to let us use their pool table and pool.

The cottage was a bit further away from the beach than we thought it would be but we had a hire car so this wasn't much of a problem.

I'd recommend that you take DVDs with you as there is no cable Tv, so if you're having a night in then you may want something to watch. There's also a really good hi-fi set up there. The kitchen has all necessary facilities and there is a large fridge freezer for all your food.

There is a large gate to keep the property secure although the people living close by were all very friendly and we never felt at all unsafe. There's also a dog which lives with joe (I think) who comes to the cottage and is the guard dog there. She's very friendly and loves jerk chicken!!
