We were bored with the all inclusive resort scene and decided to go rogue in Negril and booked the Palms, Negril as our hotel destination. The reviews on trip advisor were mixed and therefore our expectations were not overly high. We were pleasantly surprised! The hotel was older and could use a bit of sprucing up - we booked rooms in the renovated King suites and our travel companions had the nicest room on the property with an oceanview. We did not get the King as we had requested, but we were happy with our room anyway. We knew it was not 5 star and that we would not be waited on hand and foot and were quite happy to do our own thing - we walked to restaurants along the beach for our meals, took cabs to the cliffs for dinner and shopping, and spent countless hours on the beautiful (albeit small) beach watching the never ending parade of locals and tourists. It was perfect for us.
On our arrival we learned that the hotel is in receivership. This explained a few things -
The pool had issues - a leak which could not be located and therefore they were trying to keep it filled with a hose...the pool also required parging repairs as it looked pretty brutal - peeling and chunks of cement missing. And that is why there is a 7 mile beach 10 feet away - the only pool I swim in is my own so this was not an issue for me. (I especially hate pools with swim up bars - did you ever notice that nobody ever leaves the bar to go to the washroom??? Hmmmm???? Makes ya wonder, don't it?)
Our rooms were very clean and the maids were wonderful - it took us 3 days to get a fridge but it did arrive eventually and we reminded ourselves - hey, it's Jamaica - they run on a different clock than we do! And besides, I'm on vacation - a small thing like not getting the fridge for 3 days was not going to ruin the holiday! If this sort of thing turns you into a ranting and raging idiot, then this is not the island for you!
Overall the staff and security were awesome!!! Cordelia set up our travel arrangements to and from the airport and everything went so smoothly. The front office staff were excellent in making arrangements for us getting into town and out for dinner.
I would definately go back to the Palms - we found it relaxing and safe. Most of all we enjoyed not having to wear make up, do our hair or dress up if we didn't feel like it - we walked to the restaurants down the beach in our bare feet and everywhere we ate the food was amazing.
Overall, the best Jamaican holiday I have had in years - it had the feel of being at the cottage on a really nice beach - I am not sure I will ever do all-inclusive again in Jamaica!!!
