“Exactly what we expected...”

We were bored with the all inclusive resort scene and decided to go rogue in Negril and booked the Palms, Negril as our hotel destination. The reviews on trip advisor were mixed and therefore our expectations were not overly high. We were pleasantly surprised! The hotel was older and could use a bit of sprucing up - we booked rooms in the renovated King suites and our travel companions had the nicest room on the property with an oceanview. We did not get the King as we had requested, but we were happy with our room anyway. We knew it was not 5 star and that we would not be waited on hand and foot and were quite happy to do our own thing - we walked to restaurants along the beach for our meals, took cabs to the cliffs for dinner and shopping, and spent countless hours on the beautiful (albeit small) beach watching the never ending parade of locals and tourists. It was perfect for us.

On our arrival we learned that the hotel is in receivership. This explained a few things -
The pool had issues - a leak which could not be located and therefore they were trying to keep it filled with a hose...the pool also required parging repairs as it looked pretty brutal - peeling and chunks of cement missing. And that is why there is a 7 mile beach 10 feet away - the only pool I swim in is my own so this was not an issue for me. (I especially hate pools with swim up bars - did you ever notice that nobody ever leaves the bar to go to the washroom??? Hmmmm???? Makes ya wonder, don't it?)

Our rooms were very clean and the maids were wonderful - it took us 3 days to get a fridge but it did arrive eventually and we reminded ourselves - hey, it's Jamaica - they run on a different clock than we do! And besides, I'm on vacation - a small thing like not getting the fridge for 3 days was not going to ruin the holiday! If this sort of thing turns you into a ranting and raging idiot, then this is not the island for you!

Overall the staff and security were awesome!!! Cordelia set up our travel arrangements to and from the airport and everything went so smoothly. The front office staff were excellent in making arrangements for us getting into town and out for dinner.

I would definately go back to the Palms - we found it relaxing and safe. Most of all we enjoyed not having to wear make up, do our hair or dress up if we didn't feel like it - we walked to the restaurants down the beach in our bare feet and everywhere we ate the food was amazing.

Overall, the best Jamaican holiday I have had in years - it had the feel of being at the cottage on a really nice beach - I am not sure I will ever do all-inclusive again in Jamaica!!!

Room Tip: ask for a renovated room and definately bring a coffee maker and a can of coffee - bringing the coff...

“What happened to the beach?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Their website looks great -- even the visitors photos on Trip Advisor look fine, but when we arrived we saw the beach was the width of 2 beach chairs. The chairs fill the tiny beach like sardines in a can. I'll bet the water comes right up to the wall of the pool deck at high tide. (I'm uploading a photo from Jan 26, 2012). I know the hotel got mixed reviews here, but we got a good deal on booking.com and decided to take a chance. However, the negative reviews rang true. No hot water in 2 rooms. At least they didn't give us a problem (no problem mon) when we asked for a refund so we could stay somewhere else. While we were checking out, another guest came in the front office to complain that she only had hot water once a week, and that she didn't have time to wait for maintenance to fix it, and that she was unhappy. We had a better experience at White Sands (better beach, bar, hot water, and fridge included).

Room Tip: Ask for your money back.

“Excellent Staff”

We enjoyed our stay very much. The rooms are basic - as most are in Negril unless you stay at a large resort. Very clean, tile floor, bed, desk, closet - that's about it. The shower was cold on most days, but clean. It was ok for us becuase we barely spent any time in the room other to get dressed and sleep. The property itself is beautiful and well kept. Everyone we encountered on the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They really made the resort great. The restaurant/bar/pool area is very nice. Right on the beach - perfect for sunsets. Drink prices were good, food prices were a little on the high side, but the portions were generous, and the food was delicious. What we also liked about this property is that there is a little store next to the bar where we could get all kinds of supplies - water, snacks, sunscreen souvenirs, etc. - without even leaving the resort. Very convenient. We'd definitely stay here again.

Beautiful room, partial ocean view at a great nightly rate, wonderfully kind and attentive staff, from the front desk to the housekeeping, and everyone in between.

I "chauffeur" from Mo Bay airport to the Palms, and back was Leon Spense, who's been in service to tourists for 26 years <http://taxinegril.com>.

Room Tip: Really fine piña coladas at the bar but I don't know about the restaurant, I opted for street fo...

“Will take a break from The Palms!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

Been to The Palms before and it has deteriorated greatly in a very short time. Word is that it has recently been repossessed by the bank. They were consistently running out of basic supplies, no bread at the restaurant, no mint for mojitios etc.(which is funny as the bar is called Mojitos and has a long list of different mojitios on their bar menu!). Security on the beach/property is pretty much non-exsistent and the Jamaican "beachcombers" come right on to the property selling their wares. When Ramsey, the former security guard, was there this would never have happened. In fact the whole vibe of this property has changed since prior visits. Agree with others about entry doors to rooms look like they had been broken into and could have been easily opened by anyone. Website shows a nice pool and on prior visits it was in full use, this trip it was in total disrepair with a garden hose running to it to replace water. It was closed most of our visit. No one to help put out beachchairs and we watched guests struggle to get a chair off top of a huge stack. You now have to request beachtowels from the kitchen/breakfast wait staff who "appear" to be way too busy to help with that. The restuarant was pretty much empty our whole visit and so we ate at other spots on the beach. We had no hot water for most of our stay and any water pressure from shower was little more than a cold dribble. On one day we had NO water at all! We talked to other guests that were having the same issues with the water. None of the staff appeared to be happy to be there, with the exception of Max and Delores at the bar who consistently gave great service. The beach in front of the property has pretty much eroded leaving barely a strip of sand, apparently after the November storms. Do feel bad writing such a negative review as we are very easy going travelers but want to prepare others for the demise of this property. We were disappointed with our stay here, this time around even though we had a great overall time in Jamaica. Will probably not return to The Palms for awhile. Might try Seawind Resort next door next visit.
