“Perfect Vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

This was my second time in Jamaica, first time in Ocho Rios, staying February 3-10, 2012.

I cannot understand how any human being could give this hotel any type of bad review, as I was very impressed with my experience. I found the hotel staff ALWAYS aiming to please, and reminded us that we are on vacation and to have a good time. There were always people taking care of the hotel grounds and maintain it to a tee. All I can say about the food situation is try to make sure you have a good work out routine because you are going to stuff your face and gain a couple of pounds due to the amazing food selection. I NEVER went hungry, and could never get bored of the of the food because the Riu provided various dishes. We also ate at the steak house and the gourmet a la carts, and the steak was cooked to perfection.

The beach was very nice, and had a few pedellers now and again, but was patrolled by security and marine police (the bod mon). A simple no thank you was all it took. Keep in mind it's a poor country and people are doing what they have to do to eat. I felt safe at ALL times and never had an issue with anyone.

We did the catamaran tour to Dunns River Falls through Scuba Caribe and it was the highlight of the trip, and would highly recommend it. The two guys that work on the catamarn are great people, and provided a spectacular tour to Dunns which was followed by snorkiling and a stop at the James Bond Beach. There are locals selling things there but like I said a firm and respectful no thank you works. If you are interested in shopping keep in mind that bargining is key.

The pools are both beautiful and there is a bar at every corner. Rooms are kept clean and tidy daily. One thing I was disappointed with was the safe in the room, it seemed secure but locked with a key which was a little out dated in my opinion. I also had a key for my room which I hear all Riu's are like, but much rather use a key card. Also water temperature was an issue in my mother in law's room.

Entertaiment staff.......truly amazing, some of the best and professional shows I have EVER seen at a resort. By far, my favourite was the Africa show, it's a must see.

Special thanks to James Bond 007, and Pim, as these guys are highly talented, personable people who went out of their way to make you feel great. Antoher geart person was Terry Ann who worked in the buffet. She has a special rum treat, and she will tell you to "Come get your medicine", loved it!. I found the ENTIRE staff helpful, friendly and outgoing, and was very pleased.

Overall I had a fantastic family vaction and will give my business to the Riu chain again, especially this location, absolutey spectacular. I hope this review was helpful and I will answer any questions you may have.

Do not listen to the poor reviews! This hotel is AMAZING!!!

“YA MON!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!”

Just returned from a wonderful week at Riu Ocho Rios! To all the people who write a negative review....wha gwan???? We were a group of 7 ranging in ages from 16 to 56. None of us can think of one negative thing to say! The food was awesome every single day. Our rooms were spacious and spotlessly clean. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous and very well maintained. The entertainment team are AMAZING! A very special thank you to all of them for making our trip so memorable, and to James Bond and Pimm...we are still laughing our heads off!!! To Terry Ann, our medicine lady,,,you are incredible!! The entertainment was definetly the BEST we have ever seen!! The evening shows were nothing short of incredible,,,very professional! Dont miss the Fire show or the Steel Band, they were unbelievable!! Beach parties,,,,what can I say??? Totally remarkable...sooo much fun! Food.....we all must of gained weight,,,it was like a cruise on land!! A huge variety every single day,,,fresh fruit, fish, sushi, steak,,, it went on and on! We ate at the Steakhouse which was excellent and the Gourmet which we all thought was above and beyond any steakhouse here! There is a huge assortment of food 24/7....you will never go hungry!! The drinks were great,,,never went thirsty either!! Took an excursion with Scuba Caribe to Dunns River Falls...again, unbelievable!! $60. per person and TOTALLY worth it!! The guys on the catamaran were sooo much fun!! The Falls are spectacular and definetly a must see while in Jamaica. My daughter lost an earring and one of the guys swam down to the bottom of the ocean and found it!! That was amazing! Yes, there are peddlars in the water who try to get your attention to try to sell you something, but they are just trying to make a living and once you say no, they wont bug you. Dont let that discourage you from enjoying all that their wonderful culture that they have to offer. We would defintely rate our trip as a 5 plus and wouldnt hesitate to return! Again, a very special thank you to everyone at this resort for making our trip so beautiful!!

Room Tip: We were in Block 3, very central to everything.

“Jan. 29 - Feb. 5 stay”

Comments before we filled out our survey -Check in was great -two bus loads came in at the same time so i was thinking it would be a nightmare however, they were well ready for us. IN fact, one the best check in's I have ever had. Rooms were nice and most importantly clean however they were a tad far from everything but we made do. We always had enough towels, water replenished. Our friends, however, that stayed two doors down must have had a different maid as they had problems getting enough towels, face clothes, etc. All in all i was pretty impressed with the food. Buffett had a wide variety to choice from, something for everyone, restaurants good, no big complaints. Staff in the buffet room were exceptionally friendly, all of them, whether you tipped or not, especially the medicine lady (she served hot chocolate with a rum liquor) and i absolutely loved the omellette gal in the morning. Entertainment staff and most of the bartenders were superb - really went out of their way for everyone. THe ladies working the stage area were some of the rudest waitresses i have ever come across. Not hard to tell that they don't think much of the tourist. Never smile, will not make eye contact with you for fear you'll ask them to get you a drink and YES, THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO SERVE DRINKS, not just pick up empty glasses and when I ask one lady to get me an ashtray, you would have thought i was asking her for the world. Crazy, because they could be making huge money if they only put in a bit of effort - I didn't see them make a single tip - mind you, they didn't serve many drinks and if they did, it was always with a big frown. The girls working the gift shops (all 3 shops) must have gone to the same school - they are just as happy - NOT!!!! Rude, grabby and it is more then evident and they too, dislike us tourist even before you open up your mind. They should all take lessons from the medicine girl.
Comments after survey was done: Champagne breakfast stopped, no more martinis in the evening and lost of hot water. It's bizarre and perhaps coincidental , however, once we filled out the surveys, all this and more stopped. We no longer had hot water during prime hours, in fact, one night we barely had any water, just a drizzle - we had to shower after supper. OUr check out was at 6 a.m due to the early flight and there was a huge crowd - 2 bus loads, many children. Buffet didn't open till 7 a.m. so I thought they would provide us with a continental breakfast but they didn't even have coffee ready. When two fo the guys went into the dining area to grab a croissant or muffin as they were diabetics and needed something to take with the meds, the staff literally chased them out (remember, they are opening in less then a half hour). I spoke with other travellers at the airport that stayed at different hotels, and all of them had been provided with a continental breakfast before departing. Beach was okay but nothing exceptional. Would I go back to this resort, I highly doubt it.

Room Tip: Up-grade to oceon front room

“Beautiful Wedding Destination”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We visited this Riu from Jan 2 til the 9th, for our daughter’s wedding. This is our first all inclusive resort that we have visited and we had a great time. This is the perfect place for a wedding. The wedding planner (I forget her name) is great and very helpful. When my daughter and her Fiance arrived, they were updated to the Honeymoon suite…their room overlooked the wedding gazebo and the ocean…a beautiful room. We flew in on a different flight from the rest of our family and friends and asked to be put in the same building as our daughter (we didn’t know she had been updated) and they updated us to a junior suite…very nice. The room was very clean and comfortable, but smelt musty when we first walked into the room and then the smell went away. There was no chain or door blocking lock on the door…which bothered me in the beginning., after reading early TripAdvisor reports.
Everyone at the resort is very friendly and helpful. The food was very good…the Jerk Hut was excellent and we would take our full plate to the Plantation Buffet to eat. The breakfast buffet was very good…lots of choices…but the omlets were the best! The Steak House and the Asian Restaurant were very good, also. The buffets were so big that you had lots of choices and didn’t have to have the same things every day….although most days the chicken jerk was on our plates.
The check in and check out, for us was very quick and Reception was very friendly.
The Entertainment was outstanding. The Beach party and the stage shows were great. A number of our group participated in the pool beer drinking games…fun to watch.
After the wedding dinner, we had the Disco booked for two hours. My daughter had CD’s of mixed music she knew everyone would dance to. But the disc jockey kept playing his own rap music…which we all hated. Finally he started playing our music and we all danced! This was the only hiccup on a perfect wedding day!
The vendors along the shore were very annoying…even if you were in the hotel and made eye contact…they were trying to sell you something.

“I wouldn't bring my kids there....”

My husband and i had a great time at Riu Ocho Rios, but for people going there to find peace and quiet, it's not the place. It is a very big resort with almost 900 rooms. The restaurants all have great food but they are busy and you're constantly in a line-up waiting at the buffet. Great pools, but not enough bars and especially not enough bathrooms!!! For couples, it's a great resort but I would not bring my two young daughters there because everywhere you turn around, you smell pot (i've been to Iberostar in Montego Bay and we never smelled it there).
