“Great value, even better views of Ocho Rios”

I rented an apartment at Columbus Heights for about 7 months, and what really impressed me is that housekeeping took the time to clean my unit. As I was renting directly from an owner this service was not included in my monthly rent but housekeeping still made it a point to offer me cleaning services. This was really considerate and thoughtful, and for that I will always recommend Columbus Heights.

Hands down, one will not see a view as beautiful anywhere else but at Skycastles and Columbus Heights. The views offered from the units here are what won me over.

Skycastles and Columbus Heights share the same grounds, and there are many clusters of units each with their own pool. There is a tennis court and commissary (directly above the main office at Skycastles). As these units are individually owned, the furnishings and upkeep will vary. I have stayed in different units each trip back to Skycastles/Columbus Heights and have not had an undesirable unit to date.

The only thing that some would consider a downfall is the hike - guests that do not have a car literally have to hike up and down a series of semi-steep hills to get to and from the property and main road. For me this was a bonus as it was my daily exercise, but for those with bad knees or limited mobility keep this in mind.

“L-O-V-E-D IT!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2010

I went there with 4 other people. We were there for a week and we had the time of our lives. We weren't really at the hotel that much but when we were it was a good place to rest and sit and chill in the balcony.
We had one of the rooms at the top of the hills so that was quiete a climb when we didn't have a cab/rented driver.
But except that it was central. A 10 minute walk all the way down and you're in town. With a small "supermarket" where you can buy the groceries you need. We like mingling with people so we went walking into town and went to the marketplace, turtle park and offcourse... Margaritaville and Island Village. You were minutes away from the hardrock cafe, minutes away from the fishermen whom u could buy fish and lobsters from -which you could cook yourself in your kichinette- and Mama Marley's.
When we got back from our tours me and my cousin would make our own cocktails and lounge at the (small but nice) pool enjoying the view. A bar would've been nice though but we managed because Margaritaville was right around the corner.

You could book tours at the reception. The staff was always available. We said that our balcony light didn't work and that some of the doors were locked and they fixed it the next day. When we got back from our tour the next day it was fixed.
We didn't ask the lady who helped clean the room to cook but she did bring us some spices when we needed it once to cook. She was really nice. We didn't have the fresh towels problem, they were replaced daily and we didn't have any problem with the AC.
The margaritaville music didn't bother us. You could hear it when you were sitting in the balcony but I've been in worst situations I guess.
Also the security is good. There are enough gaurds walking around and everybody will get questioned before riding trough. But we choose to keep all our stuff in our luggage and our luggage on lock when we left our room (you live & you learn). Good thing is the day we traveled back we didn't have to pack again
PS: ALL rooms have a great view.

“Perfect location.....BUT”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2009

I stayed in 2 different units for the 2 weeks that I was there. The first was a 2 bedroom as it was 4 of us and then a studio as it was just me the 2nd week.

The 2 bedroom was very spacious and each room it's own bath. A couple of downfalls and I was a lil annoyed. The ac unit in the 2nd bedroom didn't work, or work where it felt cool or even cooled the room down. There were a lot of insects and if you are afraid of bugs then you may not want to stay in this community as it's trees all around, hedges/shurbs/gardens and these things harbor insects such as roaches, lizards, toads ect. You don't have a "maid" per se that comes in and makes your bed or provide clean towels as that would be an additional charge. You would have to call your contact so that they could bring you towels. While in most hotels you can leave your ac unit on, these places which are privately owned, doesn't like when the ac is left running on hot, humid, nasty days. I have had a couple of days where I get home from a miserable day only to find the ac's turned off and the window opened and leaving the window open is the gateway for ALL bugs.
The complaints I have are minor, but you think you pay your money and should be able to do anything that you want, besides breaking things, that wasn't the case and I was really annoyed. What really pissed me off was the fact that after checking out teh guy had the nerve to ask if we could not have left some money for the lady to clean up for the next guest. Are you kidding me? What we pay for is what we got. A place to rest our heads and shower. If we did have a cleaning lady even a couple days out of the week, I would have considered leaving her a lil something...but not after the incidents he pulled.

Anyway I say all that to say that it's a great location. Set on a hill overlooking the ocean and parts of the town (Ocho Rios). Very central and just out of the hustle and bustle of the towns activities. You actually have a view of even when the cruise ships comes into harbor. I would stay there again, but not in the 2 bedroom that we had but would stay in the studio. Price was great. For food we ate out mostly but bought like juices water and fruits, snacks something to have and munch.

“Can't wait to go back!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 May 2009

I just returned from a long weekend with four of my girlfriends and we stayed in unit 25E in phase 5. We were more than happy with our accommodations. We had a two bedroom, two bathroom unit and we had more than enough room. Our balcony gave us a fabulous view of the Caribbean sea and the town of Ocho Rios. Our unit had been updated recently with new counter tops in the kitchen and bathrooms. The location was perfect, although the hills up to our unit were pretty steep but you can always take a taxi if you aren't up for the long walk up the hill.

Our room was cleaned daily and our cook, Diane, prepared several yummy meals - her stewed chicken was unbelievable. We felt like we had the place to ourselves most of the time - we only saw one other family use the pool in our area the whole time we were there.

The only negatives would be that we tried to ask for more toilet paper but were told that we were only allowed one roll per bathroom per day. We ran out a couple of days (five girls in the unit - of course we ran out) and had to buy more in town because we were told we could not have extra. Also, the ceiling fan in one of the bedrooms was broken but we were okay as their was an AC unit which we didn't really even need to turn on.

All in all, we would all go back again - any time.

“Enjoyed Our Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 April 2009

My husband, 8-year old daughter and I stayed in 27F, Phase 3 of this development which was a 2-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom duplex. The daily rate includes the services of a housekeeper, Mrs. Hazel, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The bedrooms were adequate with ensuite bathrooms that were tiny but clean. This particular building was built in the 1970's and it hasn't been updated at all, so expect to experience a blast from the past if you come here. The floors in the kitchen, bathrooms and second floor definitely need to be replaced because they are well-worn, but the condo has been maintained, is clean and definitely has a vacation home at the beach ambiance. The downside to this establishment is Margaritaville located across the street from the development. It blares its evening music to such a degree that it is INSANE. You barely hear it during the day, but at night, it becomes so obnoxious that it will wake you up or will not allow you to sleep if you are a light sleeper. I don't understand how they can get away with this rude and inconsiderate behavior. It completely ruined three of the five nights we stayed at the condo (for me, because the rest of the family could sleep through the noise).
The pool in this phase is the largest and is skimmed daily. The lounge chairs definitely should be replaced because they are worn out. The property itself is quite nice, especially in comparison to the other properties in the area. It is surrounded by trees and the ocean breeze was the only air conditioning required as it was still winter in Jamaica. There is a huge sun terrace with this condo and the main regret is that there were no lounge chairs to enjoy the beautiful view--just a table with four upright chairs. The kitchenware was a mismatched affair. The towels were hotel grade, not thin and horrible. If you need beach towels just ask Mrs. Hazel as they are available, so you don't have to bring any with you.
I do recommend this condo, but just know that it is a blast from the past with beautiful parquet floors on the first level and tile on the second level that needs to be updated. The tile isn't broken, just worn out.
Most importantly, though, Mrs. Hazel is the sweetest most trustworthy, hard working lady who cooks delicious food that you must purchase upon arrival or before your arrive. She will also purchase whatever you wish for a fee and reimbursement. Oh, and for your peace of mind, there is a hotel-grade safe to store your passport and money and miscellaneous valuables and Mrs. Hazel will assure you that you are the only person who holds the key, so DON"T lose it!
This condo offers great value for the money and is much bigger than a hotel room and you can eat whatever you want whenever you want and you don't have to worry about spoiled food, undercooked food, etc.
Please note that this development is built in the hills and there are steep
inclines/declines as well as a lot of stairs, so people who are not ambulatory should not consider this property at all.
One last note: It's not a beach front property, the beach is a five to ten minute walk from the property, depending on how fast you walk, or it's a two-minute cab ride. This is an ocean view property and catches all of the ocean breezes. It has really breathtakingly beautiful views from all of the rooms.
