“Beautiful place, unimpressive staff, a bit disappointed.”

We stayed at the Royal Decameron from December 10-14 2011. It was my first trip to Jamaica, and my boyfriend's second, and I was very excited! I came to this resort with realistic expectations. After all, it isn't a 5 star resort, so you can't expect it to be. First, the good stuff. The beach areas, although very small, were very beautiful and well maintained. The buffet is on par with most resort food; nothing fancy or gourmet, but very good choices and always fresh fruit and a good omelette bar. The entertainment staff at the pool were fun and friendly, and water aerobics were entertaining.
Our first room was at the far end of the resort next to a high chain link fence where locals would climb up the fence so they could yell at us for hours on end and offer to get us marijuana. After the first day, we had had enough and requested a room change which was eventually taken care of much later the following day. The next room was truly lovely, and actually looked like the pictures of the rooms shown here. It also had a lovely view.
That being said, the entire experience was overshadowed by the attitude of the majority of the staff. The male staff were not professional, sometimes making inappropriate comments. The female staff, with very few exceptions, were inhospitable at best and blatantly rude most of the time. I was being polite, tipping quite well, even though tips are supposedly included, and I was made to feel unwelcome.
I have been in the service industry for more than 20 years, so I am usually very forgiving of imperfect service. I understand that things can't always go perfectly, but rudeness to a guest for no reason is inexcusable.
A side note: the buffet is fine, but seriously, don't try the a la carte restaurant. The atmosphere was pleasant, but the food was literally inedible. I am absolutely not picky, so please take this critique to heart! We had read other reviews saying this, but thought, "Hey, how bad can it be?" We had to find out the hard way! It would be nice if food were available after dinner at night. For some reason, that beach cafe that is supposed to serve food later, wasn't open at night at all while we were there. Even just a place to buy a bag of chips would have sufficed, but absolutely nothing was available.
Luckily, I could have had a good time in a Turkish prison with my boyfriend, so I did not let the unpleasantness of the staff ruin my vacation. We truly enjoyed ourselves. After all, it's Jamaica! Like I said, absolutely beautiful location and some of the rooms can be very nice with good views. Would definitely not return to this particular resort, though. Spend your money elsewhere.

Room Tip: Request a room in the main building where the front desk is. The ocean views are great.

“Awesome!”

Food here was definatly very good, and the selection changed more often than other resorts i have been to. The rooms were large and very clean with comforatble beds no complaints there. The pool was pretty good too and the beach although it is not one long stretch of beach the one to the far right which was infront of our first floor french door room with a porch was absolutly beautiful and the other two as well. the bartenders were very good and friendly and the tours they offer were all organized very well.

I have no huge complaints with this resort there is lots to do inculding the strip and margartiaville at night it was really fun. They were always cleaning and painting and fixing the place up which was nice to see.

I would definatly go back it was very relaxing and beautiful and there is so much to do that you need two trips to accomplish it all! may go back this summer if the price is right!

Room Tip: I liked the rooms in the smaller two story building better and on the first floor you have french do...

“Worth the price”

We went to the Royal Decameron Montego Bay Janruary 29th and spent a week out there. It is very beautiful there and lots to do. The resort is more for the 40+ people, but it is what you make it. If you plan on going to Dunns River Falls make sure you take water shoes with you. They work the best for crawling up the falls.
Back to the resort. The staff is very friendly and the food descent. The rooms are clean, but they don't have fridges. The hair dryer in our room didn't work the best so I would suggest you take your own although it is humid there and my hair was a mop as soon as I walked outside. The entertainment wasn't the greatest in the evenings, but it really didn't bother us we were so pooped in the evening that we just wanted to relax any ways. Bottles of water are supplied to the room as well. It is a very layed back atmosphere so it kind of depends on you to get things going. The alchol drinks aren't the greatest but you can buy cheap liquor for your room. I would suggest that if your really into your drinks.
The beach isn't that big but it is wonderful and there is alot of sitting areas.
I would go back in a heart beat.
Beware of the markets. You can get alot of cheap stuff there but they are very aggressive on selling things to you, but if you like big sales and are aggressive you can handle it. The people are very frindly in the markets but just very aggressive in selling.
It is worth it and if you didn't like it there it is what you make it.

Room Tip: Ask for Ocean view.

Returning to the royal Decameron after two years absence, with a large wedding group in January , was very exciting considering we have stayed there four years in a row prior. The good points the wedding was beautiful the planner and staff did an amazing job. The staff that work there are fabulous a huge shout out to Deanna in the buffet thanks for the olives! Also Kirk in the buffet,Shelley in the activity department and Simone at the bar all amazing staff members! To the new French manager happy staff make happy guests and u sir are an ignorant uneducated individual! To threaten your return guests with calling the police for smokin a spliff in a quiet secluded area is beyond comprehension a simple request to put it out would have been sufficient but u crossed the line after all it's Jamaica mon not Montreal! To the security ,so inappropriate to sexually harass your guests you know who you are! And to the couple having sex on the fourth floor, you were at the wrong resort , really?? it's sad but we will never be back due to spring break xxx and all the other things overlooked next year a private villa that we can be sure to have an amazing trip without the added BS!

“Another Great Vacation”

We have returned from a great week at RDMB. There were 7 in our group ranging from late 30's to early 60's. We all had a great time. The staff is what sets this resort apart. They are always friendly and go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. There is a new GM from Canada, Alan Richard, who is a very nice guy. He has started having a managers party for repeat and VIP guests. It gives people a chance to meet the staff. RDMB is our favorite resort and we will continue to visit as often as possible.
