“Great Location in MoBay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2008

We arrived in Montego Bay on Friday, October 17 and stayed until Sunday, October 19 when we departed to go to Negril. Our room was ready when we arrived and a very polite bellman carried our bags to our room on the top floor (there was no elevator). This is an older hotel, but it was spotless, safe, and the people there were very accommodating. It was an inexpensive place to stay and for the money, it was just fine for us. We are opened minded travelers, and using stairs was no problem for us. We have a nice little balcony overlooking the "hip strip". It was fun just sitting out there and watching the people. Breakfast is served buffet style and is very reasonable. Not 4 star, but good with juice, coffee, fruit, etc. Nice atmosphere in the restaurant.
The hotel is directly across from Doctors Cave Beach. There is a small fee to use the beach, but it is well worth it, as the beach is very clean and the water was nice and warm. There is also snorkeling equipment for rent which we used all day. There is a reef out in the water where we saw lots of colorful tropical fish. The water was very calm. The hotel is within walking distance to Marguerietaville, the Jamaican Bob Sled Cafe, etc. The best restaurant in MoBay is definately the Pork Pit. Barbecued jerk pork or chicken and a couple of Red Stripes is extremely reasonable and delicious. Worth the walk of a couple of blocks from the hotel.
The only complaint we would have is the noice at night, but realize that the hotel has some age on it. You can hear traffic noice, doors slamming in the hotel, and on Friday night, some rather loud folks who had probably one Red Stripe too many. But it is Jamaica, and we could deal with it for two nights.
All in all, the hotel is just fine for the money. No problem.

“In the midst of the MoBay action at a great price!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2008

This review is long overdue.
I stayed at the Gloustershire hotel one night in late August 2008. While I was on my Air Jamaica flight they had an article in there about a jazz martini bar on the Hip Strip in Montego Bay (BlueBeat). My boyfriend and I are avid Jazz lovers and although our travel would take us to the far side of the island in Mandeville, since I was flying out of MoBay we decided to stay there on our last night and check out the Blue Beat.
We wanted something as close to the bar as possible so we could walk and wouldn't have to spend taxi fare. This place is perfect for that! It was not even a full city block from the bar, Margaritaville, and Doctor's Cave beach was literally right across the street. There are also some nice souvenir shops on the strip.
I'll write a seperate review about the Jazz Martini bar, but this one is about the hotel.
Check in was easy. We reserved last minute over the phone and stayed in a Standard King Room on the second floor. For $110/ night right in the middle of the strip it gave us everything we needed. Both heat and A/C worked just fine (we're both weird, hot one second then cold the next). The mattress in the room was firm, bathroom small but adequate. I would compare it to somehwere in between a Motel 6 in any metro downtown area and a Holiday Inn (not quite as "budget" as the Motel 6, not as uniform/ comfy as the Holdiay Inn). What was really nice is the breakfast buffet that was complimentary. We had the traditional Jamaican breakfast. Our room also came with a free drink at the bar for each of us. A very nice touch.
Overall it is a great place to stay for a night or two especially if you plan to chill out on the beach across the street or party all night on the strip.
The room was clean and the employees were very nice.
The next time I am just swinging through MoBay, I'll stay here.

“A rip off !!!”

I just got back from Montego Bay, Jamaica. The trip overall was great as I was stayed on the Hip Strip and so was close to everything. The only disappointment was the hotel which was a real rip off as it's pretty much closed with very limited staff around to provide any services. The room was very out-dated. The A/C was broken but they had no one around to fix it. I eventually checked out and when to another hotel. The whole experience just wasted my limited vacation time.

“Not bad”

This hotel was ok. The front desk personnel is a little slow. The room was on the third floor and in the back so it felt private. The room was a denect size and a nice king bed. The bed was firm. The bathroom was on the smaller side. The room service was decent. I would stay there again because the location was great because it is on the 'hip strip" and close to the beaches, resturants, and shops. Not bad.

“I thought they were FANTASTIC! - until now.”

I liked the place & its location and chose it again over the other options in the area. I found it to be accommodating in a most friendly way and the staff to be warm like family. I stayed Aug. 2-9th and while on the plane returning remembered that I forgot to collect a Gambia Soccer shirt #10 hanging up in the inside of the shower of room #2215. No biggee-right? My plan is/was to have them hold it until I return in 2 months. I e-mailed sales, reservations and faxed them inquiring using the info. on their letterhead - No response. I even have the travel agency trying to get through. To date, I can't get a response from them. These are the same means used to make the reservation. I was planning to return in October with a small group and a larger "Mom's Getaway" group in January. All this now depends on the return of this one small item. Suppose it had been a passport, keys or my medical packet. This has been my favorite spot - their lack of response has me confused.

  • Liked — Courteous & friendly staff, Great breakfasts and Location
  • Disliked — Lack of response to inquiries regarding a forgotten item.
