“Buccaneer Beach - The Good and the Bad”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

I have visited Jamaica 6 times since 1989 and stayed at the buccaneer on two different occasions.

The Bad: The Rooms are sparse. The place is reasonably priced, yet you get what you pay for. I would put it at a Red Roof Inn or Motel 6 here in the US. The beach is public and you will have allot of people trying to sell you items. Jamaicans can be pretty agressive with their sales pitch. You will be asked to buy t-shirts, carvings, and yes... even drugs (Gasp). You need to learn one term "Me No Want Nuttin". I found that every car became a Taxi and I was asked quite often if I needed one. Trips to Negril have gotte expensive. I have heard of all day affairs costing $200. Basically not for families or romantic getaway (I guess depends on your definition of romantic).

The Good: It is instead for those with spirited hearts looking for a real locals experience
Why are you caring about your room? Sleep and wake there only. You will never ever get to know the true people if you just go straight to an all inclusive hotel. You will get maximum respect for choosing a hotel where you are not guarded by security 24/7. Your time will be absolutely intense. EVERYONE is a character. If your into drinking, the bar on the beach is fun. You'll run into a mix of people on vacation and locals. This is the closest hotel to the airport. I stayed once because I arrived late and the rest of my party did not arrive until the next day. A perfect place to stay if you just need to get a quick room in Mo Bay.

I visited with one of my friends to both the buccaneer for a week and a nice all inclusive option and he said that he was bored at the all inclusive resort. Stated that he wished we were back at the Buccaneer.

I guess it is what you are looking for. If you are looking for a super cheap option where you are thown in with the locals, here ya go...

“The Buccaneer Beach needs repairs !”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2007

I stayed at this hotel for only a week. It was okay but I feel that it wasn't a great value for $85 per night.
This property is in need of repairs. The floors in the hallways creaked while walking to the ice machine. The air conditioner was constantly leaking outside on the lanai where the staff left a plastic rubbish can to collect the water. The water overflowed many times so it wasn't very safe to walk on. The swimming pool in the front was nice and clean but the bigger pool in the back was closed for repairs.
The staff was courteous downstairs at the front desk and in the bar and restaurant. The food was okay and the prices were reasonable. The music was good and loud at the bar where they had pool tables. Visitors and residents alike play pool there. It gets crowded on the weekends when many of the residents come to eat, drink and play pool.
The beach in front of the hotel gets very busy on the weekends and people park on both sides of the street causing problems on the dead end street. If you like a quiet place this isn't for you. Its very close to the airport so you can hear the airplanes taking off.
The best thing about this hotel is the sunsets which were beautiful but I wouldn't stay here again.

  • Liked — The restaurant, bar and the sunsets.
  • Disliked — It needs repairs and its not a good value for the money.

“Ok for a 3 Star Rating!”

When in Jamaica, if you don't want to stay at an island property, you don't need to go to a hotel like the Buccaneer. Check out the Ritz, if you want fu-fu, hope you can afford it. I was always told that if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

The Buccaneer Hotel is a quaint island hotel across from a small unpopulated beach and "no," it's not fancy. The water is beautiful, as it is everywhere in Jamaica. The rooms have clean linen and the bathrooms are clean. If you have a problem, just ask to have the sheets changed or the room freshened up. Better still, ask for another room! Maybe the maid missed that room. I always say that the people that really can't afford anything, but try to go first-class for 50% less are always the idiots to give bad reviews.

There's a restaurant downstairs that will cook you anything that you ask for and the food is good. At night, the restaurant doubles as a club. No, its not like a club in Vegas, but it's island music and its really fun to dance, drink and play pool. If you want to do something more -- just take a $5.00 taxi ride up to the "Hip Strip," which is about 5 mintues away.

If you don't want to be begged by the islanders, like I said before -- go to the fu-fu Ritz (if you can afford it).

I had a great time at the Buccaneer and yes, I rested well and didn't have red ants in my bed. How crazy is that exaggeration?? LOL!!

“Hotel From Hell”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2007

I stayed at this hotel from Dec 29, 2006 - January 3, 2007. This hotel should be leveled to the ground. Dirty floors. Guest can only have hot water from 7am - 10am, no small wash towels, red ants in the beds. The curtains in the room was so sheer that we recieved a knock on the door at 11pm from a locale club goer for sex. No clerk or security officer at the front desk from 10pm - 2 am. We found her at the bar next door with friends! Hotel mangers and staff unconcern about any issues a patron has experienced. Then when asked for a credit, was told our room was an upgrade and beautiful ocean view. Yes, view of the locales parting all night long and the old bar next door - which music played very loud until after 2am - everyday. One can only wonder what type of room we were supposed to be assigned. Contacted International Vacation, company we booked hotel through and was given the run-around about billing. I will never book with International Vacation and/or stay at Buccaneer Beach Resort.

  • Liked — Nothing!
  • Disliked — Bugs in my bed and no hot water!

“See for yourself”

I just left beautiful Montego Bay and stayed at the Buccanner Beach Hotel. Sure, I'd read the reviews... as usual they were w.r.o.n.g....
The weather was sublime. The staff was friendly and courteous, basically, you need to decide for yourself.
Let's get real. "Hello... Jamaica is still a third world country".
Did you come to spend all of your vacation in your room???
You're staying in a country where the median income is $200 -$300 a month. Again keep an open mind. I travel all over the Caribbean, I am sick of reading reviews about stinky rooms and mean people.
I don't give most review sites "thumbs up or thumbs down"... I give them the "finger"
So dear reader, decide for yourself.
My opinion:
Great Food
Great Staff
Great weather
equals
Great Bargain
