This was our first trip to both Jamaica and also to a Sandals resort. We went for a week in April with some friends and family for our daughter's wedding. It was a wonderful trip, and we had a wonderful time. I had read all the reviews beforehand, so it was actually pretty much as I expected. I do have to admit that I was a little let down by the quality of some of the amenities, but I do understand that it is an older resort, and it was really fine.
The good and the not so good:
We arrived by 9 a.m. and were fortunate enough to be in our room before 10, which was wonderful. We stayed on the third floor of the Palms building and had a beautiful view of the ocean. The room was fine and the bed was comfortable - nothing special but clean and nice enough. For us, an ocean front view with a balcony is more important than the size of our room because we like to spend time sitting on the balcony throughout the day reading, watching the sunset, coffee in the morning, etc. This was a good spot; however, the beach below does get noisy with the games and the music, and between that and the very loud planes, it was not restful or peaceful during certain times of the day, especially if you wanted to nap or read. Most reviewers say they are not bothered by the noisy planes, but I have to say that we did find it very loud and a little annoying, and it does detract from the overall ambiance (although the quick trip to and from the airport is fabulous.)
We did enjoy the food and drink - almost everything we had here was really great and we enjoyed all the different dining options. We also enjoyed the ala carte breakfast upstairs on the days it was offered - very nice ambiance and great breeze. We got great service from everyone and found the staff to be very pleasant and helpful, a real pleasure.
We enjoyed the swim up pool bar, and the hot tub there is a nice place to watch the sun set. I also used the fitness room and the equipment in there was very good, although there was never any staff in there. The beach was nice, and the ocean was very calm and easy to swim in. (the water in Cancun is prettier but usually too rough). We did have to become chair towel hogs, which I don't like to do, but that's how it is here if you want a place to sit in the shade and don't have a butler.
One big disappointment - we were in Jamaica and were hoping to hear some good reggae type music - they didn't really have that. they played mostly pop music. I guess you have to go off the resort for that, but we didn't. The entertainment here was actually a little odd sometimes. My daughter did have a Mento band play for her wedding though, and they were great. (The wedding was at the Sandals Royal Caribbean, and it was beautiful and the staff there did a great job, really wonderful.) One other disappointment, although we knew about it beforehand, is that if you don't have a butler or concierge room you don't get room service or alcohol or snacks in your room. I love having coffee and juice in the morning on my balcony, and having to make it in the little room coffee pot isn't really what I want when I'm on vacation...but at least the tap water is good.
So all in all, we had a great week, enjoyed ourselves, met many nice people (it was reunion week and the resort was filled with returnees, quite a fun-loving bunch of people!). It was a great trip and we were sad to leave. However, would I return to Sandals Montego Bay - probably not - it's just the little things that, because of the high cost of this resort, I would probably look elsewhere next trip to Jamaica.
