Let me preface this review by stating that this was only the second all inclusive resort I have visited.
The Sandals Royal Caribbean is located in Montego Bay only 15 minutes from the airport. We had a wonderful greeting at the airport by Sandals employees and were taken to a well appointed sitting room stocked with snacks and refreshments. The Sandals employees quickly determined which resort we were travelling to and made arrangements for our transfer as we enjoyed our refreshments. What a difference from our visit to Cancun and a different resort where we had to run a gauntlet of time share hawkers to find our transport. This was a very relaxing beginning for our week long stay.
We arrived at the resort in good time and good spirits. The front desk staff checked us in quickly. As we had arrived early our room was not ready so we were directed to the lunch buffet in the Regency room. Soon we were escorted to our room with the Bell Captain taking care of our bags. Sandals advertises that tipping is not required. However, our last all inclusive advertised this and we found most staff there wanted a tip. At Sandels RC not once did we feel that an employee was looking for a tip. They were always more than happy to help. Everytime you meet, or even walk by an employee they will greet you and ask if you need something.
The room we had booked was called the Grand Luxe. Unfortunately I was not impressed with the room, particularly the bathroom. It was old and in poor repair. We talked to the front desk and were assured that they would help us out but the resort was fully booked and nothing could be done for a couple days. We thought that we were not likely to have anything done about the room thinking we were being given a brush off, but on the third day we were upgraded to a newer room. The original room was #10 in the Glamis building. This is a single story strip of rooms with a garden view, and a large patio area. The new room was #91 located on the second floor of the Sandringham Building and had a spectacular ocean view. I have included a photo I took from our deck. The bathroom was much better, with the rest of the room being of similar quality as the first. We were not charged for the upgrade which is a good indication of how well we were treated in general.
We took the opportunity to sample most of the dining available on site as well as two restaurants at the Montego Bay resort. The french restaurant "Le Jardiner" was our favourite. I had the most tender and flavourful beef tenderloin I have ever tried. I must say that this was one area where the service was not great. Although we received our meals as ordered and in good time, the server was not sociable in the least. Reservations are required at some of the restaurants. You need to plan ahead and book a day or two ahead as they fill quickly and you may not get in otherwise. The "Royal Thai" is located on the island just offshore of SRC. The food, though not plentiful, was flavourful and presented with great flair by our server Ronaldo. At the Montego Bay venue we sampled "Tokyo Joes" and "The Oleandor". By the way, some restaurants have a dress code and they do enforce the policy.
I mentioned the island earlier. We spent many days on the Sandals private island. It was quiet and laid back compared to the main beach, yet offers a swim up bar, great lunches and opportunity to swim and snorkle. There is a clothing optional area that is hidden away for those who wish to partake.
The free watersports included in the package are Kayaks, paddleboat and Hobie cats. The water surrounding the resort is calm as there is a reef offshore. Therefore one can enjoy these activites even if you are not too comfortable with the water. We received a free training run on the Hobie, supplied by Simone. As we were sailing around the bay my wife commented that Simone had the best job in the world. The best job in the universe, she replied!
The resort offers four main pools as well as some rooms with private pools. There are also whirlpools at most locations. There are four main beach areas, as well. We felt the atmosphere of the resort was special as there are so many areas to just hang out and take it easy. The gardens are spectacular with many varieties of flowers and shrubbery. The resort obviously puts a lot of effort into maintainance.
I could go on but I think my point has been made. If you are looking for an all inclusive resort that offers many amenities, yet has a laid back "British Colonial Plantation " feel, Sandals Royal Caribbean is for you.
Room Tip: We were happy with the Sandringham building.
