I just returned home from my 6th stay at Coyaba, & by far the best. The resort is a very small boutique property that caters to those looking for peace and relaxation. They also host many destination weddings on the property. On this visit I found my self surrounded by many honeymoon couples, & during school vacations they get a fair amount of families. Those looking for wild nightlife will have to take a taxi into Montego Bay in the evening, or stay elsewhere.
The resort is done in a very Caribbean style. If you're looking for the cookie-cutter feel of a large resort chain, this is not the place for you. Rooms are very pretty, and most have beautiful ocean views. The main difference in room is whether you book the Ocean Deluxe (smaller, with 2 double beds & a large balcony), or an Ocean Junior Suite (larger with a king bed & a mini-frig, sitting area & balcony). All rooms have coffee makers, hot water carafes for making tea, recently upgraded flat screen televisions, granite counters in the bathroom with plenty of counter space, hairdryers, high quality bath products, and iron & ironing boards. Upon arrival you will have a homemade banana bread in your room. They are incredible, & on previous stays I've made arrangements to buy as many as a dozen to take home as gifts!
All 3 restaurant restaurants are excellent. As a vegetarian with multiple food allergies, the kitchen gladly accommodated all my requests. The Vinyard is open for breakfast & dinner, and has indoor/outdoor dining. Dock's is adjacent to the pool & open for lunch & early dinner until 6 p.m. It also has indoor/outdoor dining. The 3rd is The Grounds, located on the 2nd floor of the main building. With a paneled "pub type" atmosphere, it's a great place for dinner (the pizzas & salads are fabulous), or a great place to just "hang out" and have drinks & watch sports on one of their large screen tv's. There is also an extensive room service menu.
The pool is beautifully maintained by Andrew, and always free of leaves or bugs, or anything else that should not be in a pool! I am a pool person, but there is also a small beach with many areas if you desire shade. Montego Bay is not known for it's beaches, so don't expect the long beaches and crystal clear water found in Negril.
Lastly is the service. There are no words to adequately description the staff at the resort. At first I was going to write that they treat you like family, but families fight & get sick of each other, right? Instead I'll say that they treat you like an honored guest in their home, and are sorry to see you leave. By the 2nd day they will all know your name, and Dalton in the dining room will know how you like your coffee, and what you like for breakfast!!! The management, Patrick & Gabi, are always walking around the property ready to chat with guests, & see to it that your stay is going well. I stayed at the nearby Ritz Carlton 5 times before I found Coyaba, & I've never returned to the Ritz. with it's mediocre service & large convention groups.
Coyaba is a gem - not right for everyone - but at the top of the list if you're looking for the type of resort I've described. If you're still reading this very long review, then it's probably the right place for you :)
