This was our first time Jamaica and our first time at Coyaba. We loved the resort. We liked that it was quiet. The private beach was very peaceful. I loved sitting out on the dock and watching the pelicans. There were three restaurants- we tried the Polo Lounge and the Vineyard. We didn't eat at the Docks. Afternoon tea was somewhat underwhelming- two types of sandwiches and two types of cookies the one time we went. However, their Jam-Asian dining night was beautiful- a terrific blend of Jamaican and Asian cuisine-- loved the hint of banana in the spring rolls! Also the Jamaican French toast was delish-- waffles not so much. The gift shop is only open from 9-5 and frequently closes during the day- it got to be a game between my husband and me to see if we could actually catch it when it was open. Food items there were very limited so if you like to snack in your room, you'll need to stock up somewhere else. There is a shopping center that is about a ten minute walk away with a well stocked drug store.
Our room was beautiful, very clean with good temperature control. We enjoyed sitting out on the balcony or just looking out the window. The bed is very difficult to get into if you have mobility issues as it is quite high off the ground. I also found the mattress to be too hard for comfort so I moved over to the couch and slept much better there. Our room had wifi but it was very weak and sporadic-- we got frustrated waiting for pages to load.
We never did succeed in getting the in room phone to work for outside calls so the receptionist had to call and confirm all our reservations for excursions, which she did very pleasantly and happily. Staff was extremely helpful, friendly and pleasant. We waded/swam out to the coral island on our last day and I got stung by a sting ray. The hotel manager was very solicitous and helped us get to a local clinic for treatment. He was waiting for us upon our return to make sure I was okay. Suggestion: if you decide to go out to the island, approach from the east or west side, not the land side. If you approach from the land side, you will get mired in kelp and silt and could very well get stung.
If you like breakers and surf, you'll have to go out to the island to enjoy it because there is very little surf on the beach at the hotel. If we were to return to Montego Bay, we would definitely stay here again, and I would highly recommend it to others.
Room Tip: We were offered a free upgrade to our room and took it. Try not to get on the top floor- no elevato...
