“Best in Cap Haitien (um, that's in Haiti in case you didn't know)”

Overall, I agree with the helpful and detailed review posted by ViajeroIndiana but would emphasize and slightly revise the comment at the end of that review: if you expect perfection and only like to stay in luxurious places -- then HAITI is probably not for you. Stay on your cruise ship and/or head for some touristy Caribbean beach resort on another island. If what you're looking for isn't perfection and luxury but rather a fantastic location, attentive service, and comfortable accommodations in Cap Haitien, Haiti, then I highly recommend the Mont Joli. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. No complaints. Not one. It exceeded my expectations (which I formulated having read the reviews here before booking). This is not a 5-star resort in the Virgin Islands. You won't find one of those in Cap Haitien. If you want to (or have to?) stay in the city of Cap Haitien, the Mont Joli is by far the best option: a beautiful retreat on a hill overlooking the city and away from the bustle of the streets but still conveniently located right in Cap Haitien. The two more-highly-ranked (as of this writing) "Cap Haitien" hotels are actually outside of the city and the Roi Christophe, while a very nice place, is in what I consider an undesirable (noisy and less safe) location. As to the value/price, my experience was that nice things in Haiti are not cheap. The room rate I got at the Mont Joli was comparable to other nice hotels in Haiti. Yes, it's true that for that price you could find a fancier hotel in Cancun. But I don't think you will find a better overall lodging value in Cap Haitien.

Room Tip: Ask for a room closer to the lobby area for better wireless reception.

“Outstanding customer service, gorgeous location and facility”

I am a special events assistant for my university, and we recently held a large event in Cap-Haitien. We chose the Mont Joli as the location for all of our guests (we had approximately 50 people in our group that traveled to Haiti from the US) and as the site for a large reception. We could not have been more pleased with the service and the facilities at the Mont Joli. From the manager to the wait staff to the full time special events coordinator, the service was impeccable. The Mont Joli is, simply, the best hotel in Cap-Haitien when you take into account location, the level of service and attention to detail, and the entire atmosphere. The rooms are well-appointed and tastefully simple, and the view is nothing short of fantastic.

I have had experiences at other hotels in Cap-Haitien, and I maintain that the Mont Joli is head and shoulders above the rest. As I stressed above, it is the level of service that I believe sets the Mont Joli apart. They handled our large number of guests and reception with grace and skill. I truly cannot recommend them highly enough and I can guarantee you that if you stay here you will not be disappointed. I will most definitely be back, for work and pleasure!

“Fabulous location, beautiful grounds, decent rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011

Just returned from a 5-day trip in Haiti, during which I spent two nights in the Mont Joli. This is a very nice place to stay, and it's location really can't be beat. I was most impressed with the hotel's grounds and common spaces: the open-air lobby, the gardens, the upper and lower patio (with very nice pool), and the bar with stunning views of Cap Hatien and the Atlantic ocean are all attractive, well maintained, and impeccably clean. The Mont Joli is really a haven where one can relax, have a drink, sit by the pool, or have a nice meal on the patio (but come prepared to wait). The environment is very peaceful and and feels quite safe.

The rooms are outdated as other reviewers have noted -- and my bathroom in room 15 was dingy and a bit worse-for-wear – but overall I was very pleased with my spacious accommodations. When compared to many other lodgings of a similar price range in which I have stayed in the Caribbean and Latin America (Dominican Republic, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, etc), the Mont Joli has little to envy of its competitors. The beds in my room were not luxurious, but were certainly comfortable enough, and the flat-screen TV was a nice touch, even though I didn't use it. The AC worked well and kept the room cool, and its gentle hum served to drown out any noise from nearby rooms (to tell the truth, though, the place was very quiet). The water flow in the shower was definitely meager, as others have griped, but not really worth complaining about in my opinion. Anyway, I would guess that it would be hard to find a better place in Cap Haitien, and no other lodgings in the city can match the Mont Joli's stunning location high on a hillside beat its sweeping views of the bay and the city below.

The owner, Nicholas, is extremely friendly and helpful, and I really enjoyed talking to him about Cap Haitien and the surrounding area. The staff was, for the most part, quite friendly and diligent, though the serves at the restaurant could use a bit of extra training. The food was really quite good – even outstanding in some cases – but the service was painfully slow, even by Caribbean standards. I don't mean this in a disparaging way -- to be sure, I have come to expect and appreciate that things don't always have to happen a break-neck speed, but waiting more than half an hour for a ham sandwich, or having to ask a dozen times for a bottle of Coke is a bit much for even the most patient guests.

If the service at the restaurant had been a bit more swift, and the bathroom in my room a bit less grungy, I would have given the Mont Joli five stars. I really loved the place, and appreciated its outdated charm. Having said this, if you expect perfection and only like to stay in luxurious places -- the Mont Joli is not for you.

When I return to Cap Haitien, and I hope it will be soon, I will definitely stay here again.

“Basic and no love for detail”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

We stayed there just for 1 night and moved to the Hotel Roi Christophe the next day.

Our rooms was very BASIC and I suppose all of them were the same: furniture from the 70's, the curtains were worn-out by the sun, no bath mat and the water of the shower was so sparsly running, that you could hardly rinse your hair properly. The fridge was completly rusted and we don't know if it worked, it wasn't switched on. The flat screen TV was "pocket size" and we didn't manage receiving a single channel. The carpet was full of stains. The bedspread was from the 70's too and worn-out.

When coming back to our room after breakfast, the air condition had been switched off and so the ventilator. As our room had a huge panoramic window and the sun was shining through, it heated up so quickly that you couldn't stay inside anymore, so we had to sit around on the different terraces, waiting to be picked up by friends and finally decided to check out and move to Hotel Roi Christophe.

We had already been staying there 25 years ago and came to the conclusion that nothing had changed since. Maintenance consists of painting and repainting again and again the ceilings, the walls, the wooden furniture without ever repairing it.

Breakfast was fine, though service was rather slow and uncoordinated.

I once found this hotel very charming but it lost its charm because of the lack of properly done maintenance and the basic furniture and equipment everywhere.

“loved it and will be back”

You know...having lived in Haiti for 15 + years..I usually stayed at the BECK hotel. I grew up in Africa, Haiti, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic...slept on floors, gone without food...water....and just loved a comfortable bed...AC or not...when i could find one. When i read reviews of people saying "Not worth it"....i think they are spoiled and have not experienced life. I love Mont Joli and will go there again and again. And i must say....love that Creole food.

Room Tip: Nice.
