“Quiet and comfortable respite in loud difficult city.”

I have a ministry in Haiti and am there many times throughout the year. I have stayed at Visa Lodge a few times and was only moderately impressed previously. But this time I must say that they have made some significant improvements and I really enjoyed my stay there. Our room (ministry associate and myself) was large, clean, with a large bathroom, a lot of counter space, very good air conditioning, good TV station selection (significant in Port-au-Prince). Our dinner was expensive by Haiti standards but inexpensive if you are used to travelling internationally. The food was very good (I had herbed chicken, my friend had conch in Creole sauce). It was my last night before departure, so the location so close to the Port-au-Prince airport is a real plus, seeing that traffic in the city can be a real nightmare. I would highly recommend this hotel. The room prices are a little high, because all prices in Haiti skyrocketed after the January 2010 earthquake.

Room Tip: Rooms under the reservation area are large, quiet, very nice.

“OK considering Haiti at the time”

I stayed at Visa Lodge end of August 2011 just for 2 days. I went there on Mission with the UN Environment office. We arrived early in the morning of the first day and our room was not ready. So we had to return at lunch. I found the rooms to be very basic. The bathroom was not extremely clean but usable. I showered with flip-flops. I found dust all over the furniture and did a quick clean with hand wipes. I got hot water that first night and never again. There were a couple of power fluctuation times - I suspect there is a generator onsite. But apparently this is normal for Haiti. There was a pool which I didn't use and a restaurant offering breakfast. I didn't eat as Haiti is still on a cholera alert. My colleagues ate and all enjoyed the flavors. I ate once at another restaurant and I was ok. I suppose once you are sure the food is well cooked you will be ok to eat. In general, if I had to return to Haiti I would consider Visa Lodge but after looking around for other accommodation. There was a light right outside my room which stayed on all night and keep me from sleeping soundly. The AC wasn't best at keeping the room but it did well considering the circumstances. Wifi was only reachable in the main lobby area. It could not get it in my room/cottage. Staff were pretty friendly and the property looks quite 'green'. Outside of the hotel things were a bit crazy - the hotel cooled me down after the day's work.

Room Tip: Ask for a room closest to the pool. You may be able to get the wifi.

“Nice accomodations.”

Room clean. Food good. (LOVE the oatmeal!) Service good. No, it is not a luxury accomodation, but I did not expect it to be. We were there for a week and I have no complaints. The small lizards in the room did not bother me. :)

“Not as Bad as I Expected”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

We stayed at the Visa Lodge beginning on August 24, 2011 during a visit with a non-profit organization. I read reviews online that highlighted bug problems, dirty sheets, dirty room, and broken room doors.

We experienced none of these problems, however, we took our own sheets and bed liner just in case. Our room was much better than expected with hot water, clean floors, A/C, cable TV, and plenty of room for 2 people. Our room had a Queen and a twin in it.

We ate at the hotel for dinner 4 nights as well as breakfast each day. Breakfast was below average, but I wasn't expecting much, so it's ok. Dinner was much better than expected each night. I recommend chicken kabobs.

The service was fine. Bartenders were pretty short with several people in our group, but wait staff was very nice to everyone.

If you are looking for a comfortable place to stay in P-A-P, Haiti, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Visa Lodge.

“Pay to play: Visa typical of postQuake profiteers”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2011

Supply and demand is the cornerstone of Market ethics. So why shouldn't Visa Lodge get in on the 200%+ profiteering that is endemic with the post Earthquake economy. Well, the more it costs for one to meet basic travel, housing and food needs, the lees "discretionary" cash one has to spread to the rest of the business economy in Haiti. This concentrates resources to a select group. If the higher prices translated in higher standards it might be easier to digest. Unfortunately, the rate is 200% increase in cost with a 35% decrease in valuation.

The most tangible evidence of the impact is the relative dearth of good dining away from the hotel. Many lively and enjoyable restaurants and hotel choices in the area are still in drought conditions over a year after the Quake. All this time the Visa Lodge has profiteered mightily and has shared little in reinvestment in its own amenities and improvements or with the surrounding economy.

It's "nickel & dime" ( in USA parlance ) for every last little thing, like internet access, for instance. With the dearth of decent restaurants many from the NGO Nation drop by the Visa Lodge to drop $15 US on a mediocre lunch buffet. A lions share of that money is what well-meaning donors back in the US thought was going towards "earthquake relief." A small example of the typical greed of Haiti's "stakeholders.

My recommendation is to work a little harder trying to find a way to get your money in the hands of those who are active participants in the local economy that are not so parasitic.
