“A pleasant hotel in a calm neighborhood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2011

The people working at the hotel were welcoming and helpful. The room and bathroom are plain but clean and the room was airconditioned and had a TV set with satellite reception. The restaurant was very good and inexpensive. Definitely enjoyed my Presidente beer after a dusty day. Some rooms have very nice views over the city and out to the harbor. The neighborhood is residential and more quiet than many areas of Port au Prince. Not luxurious by any means but definitely comfortable room. Seems to be frequented by people from other countries who are in Haiti for business or restoration work. I would definitely stay there again. I was very apprehensive before going to Haiti for the first time after the earthquake and this hotel was a very nice place to relax.

“Charming hotel, in a nice building and with pleasant staff, but poor beds”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2010

It is clear that, under the circumstances, one cannot expect the same standards of hotels in Port-au-Prince as in many other countries. Further, the greatly increased presence of international humanitarian and development workers in the country has clearly driven up prices in the city. With that in mind, my stay at the Prince Hotel was OK overall.

The hotel certainly has charm, as it is in an older building, and has some wonderful colonial antique-ish furniture. It is a bit of a labyrinth, which adds to its charm; there is a great view of the bay from the upper terrace (rooms in general don't offer great views, except some), and staff are mostly very helpful and friendly. The 'American breakfast' is excellent, and reasonnably priced. In particular, the omelet is great, but it also includes coffee, toast, croissant, and some kind of juice...

Rooms are very variable. Nr. 27, for example, a 'superior' room, was quite unpleasant. Nr. 1, a 'moderate' room, is already better. Nr. 4, were I stayed, was OK.

The thing is, that if management would invest in better beds -only that!- the hotel experience might go from OK to very good, but the bedding seems quite old and I was bitten by insects (fleas?) during my stay.

I can't really compare with other hotels in Port-au-Prince, and the hotel was adequate, and sometimes very pleasant, during our stay.

“avoid!”

Surprisingly, hotel was almost full...bad start when the reception had no dollar or gourde change for $20 to pay the taxi, had to give the driver a $10 tip for a $30 charge...wi-fi didn't work for almost the entire 4 days i was there...repeated power stoppages practically meant no a/c at night...food barely edible, extremely overpriced (1 two inch burned veggie spring roll for $2.50)...somewhere else next time for me!

“Two stays: Both Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2009

Comfortable, welcoming, safe and clean -- not to mention being a real bargain. We stayed twice, coming and going to Jacmel, for a total of six nights. The staff was helpful and friendly, the food was excellent for Haiti (unless you want to pay really high prices even by U.S. standards) and the neighborhood was great -- good places to buy Haitian art, for example -- and safe, although the hotel had security.
