Arrived at Les Saintes by ferry and saw a very nice hotel on the approach to the port. We were very pleased to see that this is where we would be staying for the night. We were also pleased to see that a small minibus was provided by the hotel to take us and our luggage up the rather steep paths to the hotel. Unfortunately, this is where the problems started. We were made to wait for nearly one hour while our room was prepared, apparently there was a problem with the lock. This wouldn't have been too bad but it just so happened to rain at this time so we couldn't even sit on the loungers provided around the pool and on the sea front. Therefore, we had to sit in reception and wait, whilst being bitten by lots of mosquitos and seeing lots of dead insects on the floor and on the reception desk, including a large moth! Unfortunately, it didn't get any better when we did arrive in our room. The shower was dirty and was not working well, it was hard to get a temperature between scalding and freezing. The basin in the bathroom did not have a hot tap connected. If going to the toilet, there was a glass sliding door (which did not slide) so your partner could see and hear what your were doing! Paint was coming away from the ceiling and there was no mini bar, no remote control, no way of changing the temperature for the air conditioning and no wardrobe. We paid 66.76 euros for a garden view. However, the main window looked out onto walkway and a concrete building (therefore curtains were constantly closed) which left the door which had a view onto a roof of a bungalow. Walking out of the room though did give excellent views of the bay. Breakfast was included in the price of the room. This consisted of bread and jam, cake and fruit. There was also fruit juice, tea or coffee to drink. The positive aspects of the hotel were the shuttle service to the ferry port, the ferry port and the location. You really do get spectacular views of the bay when sitting on the lounger at night. It is almost worth putting up with the poor standard of the hotel for this alone, although we wont be returning. The nearest non-hotel restuarant is also excellent, La Saladerie, we went twice. Also, instead of hiring a scooter, which not one will let you rent unless you have had experience before, try a minibus tour. It was only 10 euros per person and you get taken up to Fort Napoleon (a big climb) and visit th e rest of the island in a day with a chance to walk around and stay on a beach. We used Pompierre. The guy was born and bred Santois and was extrmely kind and helpful, even going as far as offering us a drink from hios restaurant. All in all, a great place to visit for the weekend, but try to find somewhere else to stay.
