Spent four nights here prior to Christmas 2009. I love this island. The hotel is located at one end - a couple of km from the centre of town. The hotel will organise a cab to come and collect you but if you didn't plan too far ahead then the taxis are available by walking to the end of the quay and turning right. Taxis go from in front of the church about 50m up the hill on your right.
Pool looks inviting but declared too cold by the kids. The sea on the other hand was nice and warm even if the beach is a little (okay a lot) narrow. Snorkelling off the beach and keeping land on your right is excellent and its possible to snorkel all the way down to the small beach at Pain de Sucre. This beach is also accessible by walking up the road from the hotel - this is a good idea because half way between the road and the beach is a nice bar.
We had breakfast included and were very happy although the French clearly aren't totally geared to having nice cold, ice cold milk with their cereal. Scrambled eggs were world class - better than George V according to my son. And he knows his eggs.
Evening set menu expensive - 31 Euros so we settled for eating in town or grub we'd bought at the supermarket.
If you're not happy about renting a scooter to get abbout then the hotel provides three free shuttles to town morning and afternoon.
The island itself is beautiful. Plage Pompiers is the best beach but the best grub on the island was a fixed menu meal at a restaurant (whose name regrettably escapes me just now) at Baie du Marigot. It's the only one there though. Fixed menu 16 Euros - salad, main, desert and a belt of rum to wash it down.
Lonely Planet claims you can ride your scooter to the top opf the hill at Le Chameau but the road is (theoretically) closed to all traffic. The walk though is only about half an hour and if you're comfortable with steel ladders and no safety nets then the view from the lookout tower is fantastic.
