This is designed to be a comprehensive review of the Catolina Royal hotel - the good, the bad and the ugly. My husband and I stayed here, for 2 weeks, in January 2012 and we have set out review on each aspect of the holiday, below.
The Hotel and Grounds:
The Royal side is adults only and is definitely the more peaceful and exclusive side. All the fun and entertainment, however, happens on the Bavaro side. The hotel grounds are lovely - lots of green foliage, meandering pathways, lakes and ponds, and thatched roofs.
There is a 9-hole golf course at the entrance to the grounds which we did not use but which looked really lovely for those who like to play.
The rooms are also lovely - a large bath in the bedroom (jacuzzi if you're in one of the deluxe suites), a king sized bed and balcony with hammock as standard. They are cleaned to a good standard and are a lovely haven at the end of a busy day of sunbathing!
There is a minibar that is stocked with several bottles of water (even brushing your teeth with tap water is advised against and so an endless supply of bottled water is supplied), soft drinks, beer, biscuits and peanuts. Beach towels are replaced every evening, usually while you are out at dinner.
Staff and Language:
The staff are generally quite friendly but we did encounter one too many surly individuals- whether cleaning staff, waiters or bar tenders - to avoid commenting on this. We went to Thailand this time last year and felt that people were genuine, warm and friendly. We didn't get this so much here, despite the allegedly famous Dominican hospitality and friendliness.
Whenever I go abroad, I do my best to learn some of the local language. I do not speak Spanish but I did teach myself some basic pharases. This is really not enough to get you by at this hotel. Communication is a massive problem for the majority of hotel staff, whether restaurant staff, spa staff, bar staff or cleaning staff. Ordering the simplest of things at dinner was a huge hassle and the wrong food was delivered to us on multiple occasions. The exception is the Concierge staff, who are generally fluent in English. Oddly, a lot of staff can speak fluent French or German but not English - you will do better speaking in French than English!
Beach:
It's a shame about all the seaweed that washes ashore on the beach each day because, otherwise, the beach is lovely. The Royal side is much quieter than the Bavaro side and there are always sun loungers available. It can get quite windy on the beach but when it's hot, it's a real blessing.
Pools:
The pools on the Royal side are much nicer than on the Bavaro side. There is one pool near the reception and a gorgeous infinity pool closer to the beach - both are great places to relax but you do need to get there fairly early to grab a sun lounger, as they're both a lot busier than the beach. The pool near reception has a pool bar that you can swim up to and at which you can order cocktails and mocktails. There is a good selection of drinks available.
Cleaning/ Room Service/ Towel Service:
I have lumped these together as these are my "haphazard" category. Rooms were generally cleaned in a timely manner although a couple of times we returned to our rooms at 4pm (having left at 9am) and they had not been cleaned. We were forced to sit at our balcony, whilst the staff cleaned.
Replenishment of our daily supplies was about as reliable as the District Line on the London Underground. There was not a day that passed where the staff replenished everything. Either we had no water (really helpful!), no peanuts, no biscuits, no teaspoons for our coffee or the mugs were not replaced or the beach towels were not replaced. We twice had to call reception to send us bottled water.
Room service is extremely limited in choice: a few sandwiches and salads and a hamburger; no proper meals as you would expect in most 5* hotels. The food, however, is very tasty if you are lucky enough to get the right food delivered. One morning we ordered breakfast to our room and 50% of the items were incorrect! The staff are very quick to place the blame on you rather than apologise unreservedly - and this is usually down to the language barrier when the staff completely fail to understand and clarify what you have asked for.
Food:
There is no booking system for the restaurants and customers are served on a first-come-first served basis. The food is of a generally decent standard. There are 7 restaurants to choose from, so plenty of variety and, naturally, some are better than others. The Spanish restaurant on the Royal side (Catatapa) is, by far and away, the best of the lot- really delicious food. However, you need to arrive either very early or late to get a table. The Italian and Japanese are pretty good, too, as is the Mexican. We did not try the American restaurant as there was not a single vegetarian dish, and only one fish dish, on the entire menu.
Vegetarians be very cautious - just because a dish does not mention meat, it doesn't mean meat is not there! Even simple side dishes that sound "safe" such as "mixed vegetables" are usually littered with ham or bacon. NEVER assume it is vegetarian and always check. Menus list vegan dishes as vegetarian, but if you eat cheese and eggs you'll have to be a bit more clever.
Spa:
If you have time and money to spend, treatments in the spa are recommended. The treatments are generally quite pricey (on par with, or slightly more than, average treatment prices in London) but they do last the time specified and are very good. The spa also hosts a sauna and steam room (both free to use) and a hot and tepid jacuzzi outside (also free), which are great to relax in during the late afternoon.
There is also a free gym in the spa centre, which is small but contains most standard gym equipment - not that I did any gym time during the holiday!
Entertainment:
There is certainly no lack of entertainment on the Bavaro side of the resort. There is a show every night of the week at 9:30pm. The magic show and the Michael Jackson show are the ones to watch out for, as both are very good. They also host a beach party around once a week, which is good fun- especially the Royal only beach party.
There is a also a casino (which was quite small and not our thing) and a disco but I never actually saw that in action.
Be wary of the description of a "pool table" on the hotel website; this is the smallest pool table I have ever seen, besides the novelty ones that are about the size of your hand. There are, however, two table tennis tables which we made a lot of use of.
DVD players and DVDs are available to borrow (free, but with a deposit) from Concierge and we decided to do this on a few occasions.
If you want to spend time on the Bavaro side of the beach (which we didn't) there are plenty of beach activities available, including volleyball, aqua aerobics, beach aerobics, beach football etc.
Watersports are largely free and worth investing some time in.
Overall View:
This is, generally, a great hotel - I would agree that it is 5* and has pretty much everything you could need for a beach holiday. The service can be hit and miss - and sometimes just downright infuriating - but you have to learn to just swallow your irritation and enjoy your well-earned holiday. Overall, I would recommend this place and if they could have just sorted out their inconsistent service, be a little more genuinely friendly, and learn to communicate better, I would have given it 5/5.
