We went with our entire family to Ocean Blue & Sand in the Dominican. The resort is very nice and the amenities are good. They have everything you could ask for from a resort. My wife, sister in law, nieces and mother all took in the spa and had nothing but good things to say about it. The dining area for the buffet is well laid out as was the restaurant/buffet by the beach.
The themed restaurants in our opinion were overrated. The food isn't any better than the buffet and the service is actually slower. We really enjoyed the service we received at the buffet's was exceptional. During breakfast and dinners, we were served by a gentleman named Juan Franco (i'm assuming it's Franco because his name tag said Juan Fco). He went above and beyond in ensuring our family was well taken care of and that wasn't easy to do with a group of 10 including a 1 year old and a 3 year old. Thank you for the great service Juan Franco.
During lunches, we always ate at the buffet by the beach. Again we had exceptional service from Angel Luis Delosanto and Carmen Garcia. They pretty much became part of the family by the end of the trip. They were so accommodating and again extremely helpful with such a large group. As a family we paid extra for the Privilege upgrade and we felt it was well worth the additional cost.
The only real complaint/issue we had was with the room service/cleaning. On more than one occasion sand was not cleaned from the floor and drinking glasses were not removed/replaced with clean one's. It wasn't horrible, just not what was expected.
Just some FYI's that other reviews seem to neglect.
1) January is very windy and rainy in Punta Cana. Expect wind, wind and more wind. Everyday was windy and every night it was pouring rain. Thankfully it rained the majority of the time at night and only a few times during the day throughout the week we stayed. We couldn't believe how windy it was and on a couple of occasions it was too much to be at the beach. After speaking with the locals, the end of June seems to be the best time to come down as there is virtually no wind, clouds or rain and always sunny and hot.
2) There is a very cool beachfront shopping strip where vendors have their wares in huts that line the beach. This is right beside the resort and has all the typical tourist items you may want. Everything from hats, dresses, t-shirts, paintings, alcohol, cigars, etc...... In particular, I did a lot of research on Rum before i went down. If your into rum the one's to keep in mind are Brugal Siglo De Oro (best price i found was $125), Brugal 1888 Anniversary (best price found was $60), Brugal Titanium white rum (best price found $22) Ron Barcelo 30th Anniversary (didn't buy but priced at around $200) and Ron Barcelo Imperial (best price found $20). The Ron Barcelo Imperial and the Brugal 1888 are listed 10 and 11 respectively in the top 50 rums in the world. The one i wanted but couldn't get is a little known rum out of the Dominican called Vizcaya VSOP. It is highly rated sand hard to get. Apparently it is only available in Santo Domingo and i wasn't going to go 4 hours one way to get it. The hut flying the Dominican flag treated us the best and gave the best prices on the rum and Cigars. I bought my Cuban Cohiba Maduro 5's from them at a great price. Another great cigar i tried for the first time was Vista Reals and they are a local Dominican brand. Very good and a great price.
3) The shopping market is about ten minutes away and should cost you no more than 20 bucks each way. Any more than that and they are trying to hose you. Expect to be herded/persuaded to enter each and every shop as they are all out in front waiting for you. They'll use lines like "almost free", "I'm next or It's my turn", "best prices guaranteed" or my favourite "it's rude if you do not take a look at my store". I had fun with that one and told them what i thought of that comment. in any event, they are all trying to undercut each other for your money so be ready to bargain and haggle.
