We prefer a smaller hotel when we take our winter vacation so we were not sure if the Colonial with about 650 rooms would prove to be just too large and impersonal. We were in for a very pleasant surprise as we found all the staff very friendly and the waiters at the bars and the serving staff in the dining rooms after a day or two knew exactly what your preferences were and this was amazing when you think of the hundreds of guests they attend to in one day. And most of all they were always very pleasant and helpful .
The hotel is well designed and unlike some, the public spaces were very open with lots of seating and even though the main lobby bar could get crowded around the dinner hour we could still find someplace to sit and enjoy our drink. Loved the outdoor plaza where we had our after dinner drinks and danced to a really great band or performer... under the stars of course.
We had a junior suite (2236) overlooking the pool bar where most of the pool activities took place so if we go back (and we will) we would get a room over in the 3rd building as we found that if we wanted to sit out on the balcony after a day at the beach it was very noisy. The room was very spacious but not sure that we liked the unusual bathroom setup - tiny toilet, huge shower stall and a jacuzzi in the open room. The room was always very clean and the fridge stocked with lots of water and soft drinks every day and I would say that the only complaint we had was that the bed was lumpy and needs to be updated.
We found that the food at this hotel was good and the variety was just amazing... cannot see anyone going to the main buffet and not finding something that they liked. We felt that the food and the service at the French a la carte restaurant was not good and it was so dark in there that made it very difficult to see what your were eating or drinking. We were there for 2 weeks so we tried the Dominican which was great and the seafood a la cartes with the most delicious lobsters but had most of our dinners in the main restaurant.
The beach was the best strip of beach in Punta Cana and with a small reef just off the beach even when we had high winds (and we did) the sea was still calm enough for a timid swimmer like me. We walked every day along the beach and there was never any debris on our strip so I do not know if that is cleared by the hotel cleaning staff which did a great job on the pool area every a.m. around 6
We have been to several AI in Punta Cana and I would definitely say that the Majestic Colonial was the best and that includes the beach.
