My wife and I just returned from the best vacation we've ever had. I am 58 years old and have visited many holiday locations in the Caribbean. We were worried about all the reported "tummy troubles", but in 2 weeks we experienced no problems whatsoever. Anybody who complains about the food here must be eating out with Donald Trump every night - i.e. the culinary selection is fantastic. For Barb and I the Japanese was the best, but we also enjoyed the Gourmet and the Dominican/Mexican. The lobster at the Surf and Turf Shack was great too - no need to dress and very informal. If by chance you're not happy with your meal just get up and visit the buffet - it's amazing.
I'm not going to dwell on the negative reviews, but like many, I booked this vacation months ago and followed Trip Advisor every few days. I'd like to refer to Taylor 10782's January 20th critique where she rated this resort as 1 out of 5 Stars. Yes, we're all entitled to our opinions, but I say insane - this place is magnificent.
I believe the beach at the Colonial is the best in Punta Cana due to the wide bend and long stretch. We never had any trouble finding lounge chairs and unlike the GBP Amber we visited last March there was plenty of room. No sardine can situation.
If you can swing it, upgrade past the base room and you can enjoy room service and a few bottles of complimentary hootch. The room service food was the best we've experienced in the D.R. Believe it or not they offer sushi plates, consume soup and even chicken wings. Even the burgers taste like back home in Toronto.
During our 2 weeks in the PC we meet a number of staff. I'd like to thank a very classy guy - the G.M. Mr. Angel Holgado and his manager a lovely young lady Wardes Garcia. We had a few concerns and they addressed everything promptly. The Colonial has a 24 hour burger/beer and rum spot near the casinos. I'd like to thank the chef, Stanley and his waiter Obulio, as well the night manager Carlos Watkins who provided a laugh and some insightful information about the resort and the area. Truthfully there are too many names to mention. This resort is geared for service. Late one evening my wife and I couldn't sleep. It was around 4:00 am so we decided to take a walk on the beach. We thought we were alone, but were soon met by Security who established the fact that we were guests and then directed us to the best location to see the sunrise - nice touch.
Barb and I visited this resort in 2006 and it has only improved. Each to his own. We walked around the Elegance, but for us it was a little too posh and not as wide open as the Colonial. I guess their names say it all. One is in the Colonial style and the other is more Elegant. On vacation we prefer to be a little more laid back. But, believe me you're not roughing it at the Colonial.
I'm trying to keep this short - hahahaha, but we loved this holiday and have few complaints. Yes, the bathroom in the room set up is unusual. We just ran a tap while the other did their business and the balcony set up would benefit if there was a screen on the sliding door. I read some felt the beds were too hard. For us this wasn't a problem at all. You're on vacation and no place will compare to your home.
On a personal note, and I hope she reads this. We lost our air mattress through carelessness in the pool. A lovely lady from Wisconsin U.S. came to the rescue and offered us hers on the day she left - Gracias. Anyway I am sure I've missed a whole lot of stuff, but if anyone complains about this resort they are either very tried or unhappy with life. You know the type - the GRASS IS TOO GREEN and THE SUN IS TOO HOT.
If we can swing it, we'll be back to this resort soon. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. J.W.
