“Very Good Value Versus The Price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I read other reviews… some praising the place… some pointing out the problems… to be honest… in a way… both are true. I guess it depends on what you expect and not get… some bad things you do expect and then you get pleasantly surprised… and others again… might be a real problem… Nevertheless… darlings… do remember… this is the DR and it would be unfair to expect the hotel standards of USA or Europe… especially… for this kind of price. ☺ ☺ ☺
Here… my experience:
I had two 1 week stays in two months. First with family, great rooms and great service, second with friends… troublesome rooms and slightly less efficient, nevertheless fair assistance/service. This resort, however, does stand out for the abundance of intelligent staff people. Whoever is choosing the staff has a very good common sense and obviously extent experience in the hotelier business and the managers do have an amazingly good grip on the staff. Congratulations to all. ☺
Of course not all was a “bed of roses” and there is always space for the staff “personality” factor… At times some “assistants” would treat us as “royalties” putting us on VIP list… while others would “bare” with us… others again would be giving the priority to the loud and rude (but abundantly tipping) Russians… Most of them… however… would keep a watchful eye on our needs... without disturbing. The general feel was that there was always someone there, when you needed anything… ready to help out. At times… a puzzled look was enough.
Lovely.
Hotel is basically divided in 3 sections:
Standard rooms, Priviledged rooms and Royal section. For a 5* European Metropolitan standard none is really expensive… it is just up to you what manner of holiday you are actually in for… not so much on how much you are willing to spend. If you are fussy about people drinking, smoking and dancing… get the ROYAL (very quiet) side. Originally our intention was to upgrade from Privileged to Royal once we got there… for the sake of services and extra amenities… but I am glad we gave it a peek before upgrading. Villas with own private pool are tastefully set… delicious… but the ones eventually available at that time, were much further from what we already had (sea view rooms)… Royal also has part of the beach reserved… (but really just about anyone can walk in… so no point). Secluded quiet pool has lovely padded loungers… a delight… but I barely ever use a lounger… hence… no point there either. This side of the resort is brilliant for whoever wants a time “away” from everyone and wants to spend most of the time in his own room far from people and noise in a very reticent, semi-formal environment or perhaps for the elderly persons appreciating the extra services this side offers. We instead were in for…yes… somewhat comfortable suites-type rooms but since “the black-tie” situations are our “daily bread” back home… in for some genial confusion… and mainly relaxed… “swimming suit all day (AND perchance the night also!)”… type of environment… so we chose not to stay here.
However, upgrades rank from 120 to 500 USD… per person/villa per day… so as I said… affordable to all.

Get the Privileged if you need little extra attention. I said little… since there is not much of a difference between Standard and Privileged anyway… unless you get the beach view room… then it is worth it… and separate (most of the time very efficient) check-in/out area and dedicated concierge desk (not when it is raining! ☺) All there speak fluent English… (it happens you hit on the apprentice… just like anywhere else)… with a little buffet type of refreshment corner. It always had drinks… often ice turned into puddle… but usually it was there… at least in the mornings and such was the faith of the snacks… and sweets. (I think I found them… twice). However… it was a lovely glass-refill pit-stop on the way to the well equipped shopping mall… or the SPA…
With this type of room you get the walk-in entry cards for the speciality restaurants without previous booking… but I discovered later that basically everyone had this… regardless. You do get the best part of the beach restaurant separate section with this kind of room…(opened breakfast and lunch only)… which is worth the while… but the selection of food here is limited. Tables are all with fantastic view of the beach with the palm trees… Delightful… with delightful staff. One day when I could not decide what to eat… one of the chefs prepared a “special” pasta… nothing really special about it… but I felt pampered… At times it takes so little… does it not? Well… here you get plenty of this… or at least… I did. ☺
Privileged also offers the cart service from the lobby to your “far away” room… (and the other way around) available most of the time… so if you do not feel like walking… there is the solution. They also rent bikes… but have seen only the staff riding them…
If you are a “party animal” and spend little or no time in your room then it is very convenient to get the Standard room! Same size and the same size balcony as privileged (only the decorations are different colour)… but in a more central position… close to all the booze… and happening, restaurants/lobby bar/show area/disco/and pool bar… cannot miss there!
A small bottle of rum is awaiting you in all rooms… fridge is diligently stocked daily (at least mine was!)… and as the cleaning lady understood that all of my party nightly gathered on my balcony for a drink before the dinner… unasked she kindly provided my room with extra glasses. Really thoughtful and sweet.
Yes… on both of my stays we had to chase after our fresh beach towels… hardly ever succeeding… likewise the promised bathrobes that we have never seen in our rooms… We just did not bother… the clean towels for showers were always there. Hence… ☺ ☺ ☺
Bracelets distinguishing all the AI in the Caribbean are here organised by nationality… or so it seemed… except for the Privileged and Royal.
No booze before 10AM and only beer after 2AM. Pool bar has snacks and beer all night… but they tend to run out of some things right after the Disco closes at 2AM… you can, however, always find something in order to “survive” until breakfast… which is then from 6AM served at the main restaurant or the restaurant between beach and the pool… Food at the main buffet restaurant is always plentiful… tasty and the choice is so varied at all meals that the chance of not finding something to your pleasing… is... well… impossible! Besides… if you ever had a Dominican friend prepare a meal for you… then you will know that Dominican dishes at this resort come the closest to the “original” which to me is sheer poetry. ☺
Beach is ok… We must have been there right in the period of “cleaning of the sea” so basically water looked a little “dirty” where it touches the shore and to get to the “clean” part you had to swim trough the cloud of algae… Being used to the crystal clear Caribbean waters… I refrained from going in. Tried to take a walk both sides… This resort is quite isolated so I expected some lovely wild beaches… only to find… that one direction is piled with garbage… and the other end, where the ever so lovely palmetto is… the sea basically becomes a swamp. Have seen several guest walking beyond the swampy part… obviously it clears after… but I myself did not venture. However… the part of the beach that belongs to the resort gets meticulously cleaned daily. I… nevertheless… preferred renting a helicopter and was flying out to Saona island. Nothing beats Saona sunsets and the afternoons on the deserted beaches… especially comfortably arriving after all the excursionists left… ☺ Divine.
Pool has activities and music all day… so ask for your room accordingly. I would not suggest pool-facing room for the families whose children take afternoon naps in the room… nor for to the adults that do so. ☺ The pool is also a central “party point” for the Russians. While fully respecting the diversity of cultures and habits… I am also absolutely convinced that a behaviour area called the “middle zone” must exist… where we (non Russians) understand their freedom, habits and their “party style”… but where they also respect the rest of us… non Russian guests… and our freedom to actually enjoy our own holidays… our own way. We often had to undergo their rude ways in… restaurants… bars… etc. Especially evenings… my lady-friends and myself… how to say this politely(?)… were “insistently courted”… (probably by the crew that was partying at the pool all day… otherwise… at least I hope… they would have noticed that we were a closed party!) However… thanks to the male members of our party… we were able to deal with it… until one evening the male part of our party was missing… so we girls tried to deal with it… but it eventually got so bad that the security had to intervene to get the rum-struck Russian out of my hair. I heartily thank and congratulate the hotel management for the excellent security service… always present and on the watch…
Let me stress here that certainly not all the Russians are this way… we have met some wonderful persons along the path… majority, nevertheless, sadly is. So allow me to make a small suggestion: how about printing a small booklet/pamphlet in Russian about manners containing some basic social behaviour suggestions in the “common areas”… of the hotel… and deliver it together with the invitation to the Casino or the SPA… at the check-in.
Time ago there was the need for the basic guidelines of the “dress code” for dinner restaurants… (that some other nations needed to learn!)… I have seen such signs all around the resort. Now we just might need the signs with “behaviour code” for others. Don’t you think so?
The ones that behave will probably smile at the suggestion to say “please” and “thank you”… but others will be warned in advance… should they after need be reprimanded… say… for elbowing their way trough the Q at the restaurant (it happened… well… the elbowing … not the reprimand!) or they might finally get informed that the “cave man” manners of grabbing the female by the hair to drag her his way… got a bit out of fashion nowadays… and for quite some centuries… it has been replaced by simple verbal requests like: “excuse me”… when you need to pass… and “would you like to dance?” and definitely they need be informed that a “No, thank you” is not an invitation to insistence… but it means “NO”. Full stop.
Thankfully this general Russian-rush… was here… in this hotel… much less felt then in many others… nevertheless… at times… it does quench own freedom to enjoy own time... Especially… if you are a woman.
.
Well… just a suggestion… not only for this resort… In general.

The nightly shows were quite spectacular… although I did not follow them closely… however, my Dominican friends that were visiting us on several evenings (night pass AI from 8PM until 2AM was 55USD per person… I believe…)
were quite enthusiastic… so was the rest of my party. The after show live-music dance in the lobby bar was lovely… the band was fantastic. I believe the Royal side has a much calmer piano-bar style music every night… but we liked the “merengue party corner” with some cha-cha and rumba thrown in occasionally. ☺ ☺ ☺

Disco is a spartan “club” stile… with some wooden benches around the dance-floor and some stand-tables (without the seats)… Since there was a very efficient bar operating in the disco I found this choice of decoration a very wise and hygienic choice… there was (party-effect!) plenty of spilling and wet floor… that was constantly and diligently taken care of by the cleaning lady… Have never seen such constant attending to a club… with such devotion and care.
Some days there was nothing but house music… some days hours of merengue… some days there was a song or two of the dance music that was slightly familiar… other days sole dance music… in overall I believe the music depended greatly on the DJ and the type of audience. Sometimes both was true… only that it was disengaged. ☺ As the ambience reminded us more of a gym then a club… we used it as our daily (great fun!) gym… and we all… lost weight… ☺ ☺ ☺
SPA is good… clean and well organised… products are average… nevertheless… my aching shoulder was looked after and soothed by the girl’s care and special attention. She pampered me with hot cloth applications until the pain attenuated. I was so thankful.
Got my hair braided there… job well done… The two girls doing the job said: “Don’t worry… you are in the hands of professionals”. True. ☺
There is also a Casino… but can only tell you that is small and kind of cosy… and that some members of our party lost money there… but that is as far as I can get with this issue. Sorry.
Due to the isolated position… and lush vegetation surrounding resort… there are plenty of mosquitoes… so bring the strongest possible protection for children and sensitive adults. You will need it all.
I needed medical help… which is good and present 24/7… but remember… it is not “your” doctor… hence, bring your own medicines if you have a health condition… in addition to your “standard” travel-kit medicines (pain killers that you know well… antibiotics… etc).
In overall? Well… here you get one entire week of a real “all inclusive” and above average service for a price of one night with breakfast in a 5* “club room” of your (metropolitan) hometown.
Travel… but do know where you are going. Bare in mind that some employees here earn in entire month less then you spend one night on your bottle of wine…
Do stay at this lovely resort… and if you do not look too closely at couple of small black spots surrounded by a perfectly healthy… shiny and tasty apple… (or mango in this case☺)… you will be happy here.

“Great time, great people, beautiful beaches...”

We have traveled quite extensively, and wanted to add a review for this hotel for people who are flip-flopping about staying at this resort due to mixed reviews. We decided to book at this hotel based on the recommendation of our travel agent, who lived in the Dominican for 3 years.

The Flight
We flew Air Transat from Calgary. We have Nexus cards so were able to bypass the looooong lineup at 4am at the security gate. The flight had a great deal of turbulence, but was otherwise uneventful. It is definitely worthwhile upgrading to Club Class for this flight (we usually do but booked this trip last minute and they were sold out) or at the very least, the Options Class. We arrived on time at Punta Cana airport. Customs was very simple, but make sure you take the 'express' lane at the airport if you were given the $10 vouchers, otherwise you'll be in line for a while. We decided to take a taxi for the $30 to the resort, given that it was only 3pm, otherwise we'd be waiting for the other 21 people to get on the bus. They didn't get to the resort until 5pm, whereas we were already in the pool with a cold drink by 4pm.

Check-In
Again, pretty simple. Everything was waiting for us, they are very friendly at the front desk, and speak good English. We were given a large room in block 20, right beside the pool. They give you a map, and you can get a bell hop to take you to the room, but it's pretty simple. There is one long pathway that runs from the lobby to the beach, all the rooms are right off there, or just one row behind.

The Room
We asked for a king bed, but were given two twins pushed together. Not a big deal. There was water, pop and beer in the fridge in the room, and it was re-stocked daily. You may not get clean towels right away when they come to clean the room, but they're always there by 4pm when you want to get back to the room to shower before dinner. The rooms were clean, no bugs. We were on the main floor, and only noticed a couple millipedes, but it was right after rain, so we weren't surprised. Every room has a nice patio with a hammock.

The Pool
The pool is very large, and there is a kid's pool near the rear, by the snack bar. Most of the kids will be there, but be ready for local kids to be jumping off the lounging ledge at the pool into the water and getting pool water into your drinks. It's a family resort... get over it. DEFINITELY make friends with Giselle at the swim-up bar and Richard at the pool bar (other side of the swim-up bar). They really made our vacation. Tip a couple bucks a day and they will treat you like royalty. On that note, please DO tip if you get good service. These guys work long days and don't make alot of money. They really appreciate the gesture, and there's alot of Europeans that just don't tip.

The Food
Being from Alberta, we didn't expect much from the beef there. The cows are different, the meat is tough. We ate at the Japanese, Mexican and Italian. We heard alot of negative comments about the Steakhouse so didn't bother.

Japanese - the appetizer sushi was okay. The teppanyaki was cold by the time they serve it to you. Portions are small. Once you're done eating, they almost immediately rush you into another room for tea and dessert. Not our favorite.

Mexican - this was one of our favorites. It is authentic Mexican, not North American Mexican, so don't expect big 9" taco shells. The chipotle chicken was very yummy. They will keep bringing you chips and dips if you ask.

Italian - we did this one twice. The appetizers are all good. For mains, we had the gnocchi, ravioli and risotto. The risotto was not so good, but the other dishes were excellent. The service is great at this restaurant too. We ordered wine by the bottle, and it is really reasonably priced.

Snack Bar - this is located on the top of the pool and is open 24 hours. Between 12 and 4, they make the most unbelievable wood oven pizza. Don't go right at noon, as there will be a lineup. They will even do custom pizzas if you ask. The burgers here have some weird filler in them that makes the burgers look raw. I didn't eat them.

Buffet - there are alot of reviews on this. It's a BUFFET. If you're looking for fresh food, order an omelette. This is a third world country so DO expect to see the pork from dinner the night before mixed into a salad for lunch the next day. Have you never had leftovers??? Really people. There is a wide variety, and the breakfasts are quite good. We never ate the same breakfast twice. They did eggs every way you could imagine. And if there's something you're looking for that's not on the buffet, just ask (I wanted bananas everyday).

Off the Resort
We went off the resort for dinner to a well-known local restaurant called Jellyfish. It is about a $23 cab ride, and if you make reservations for dinner, the restaurant pays for your cab ride back to the hotel. It is a 5-star restaurant, open to the beach. It was a great experience. There is alot of fresh local fish on the menu. We had the Mahi Mahi, Sea Bass and Langostines. Everything was excellent. Dinner for 3 people with wine was $190 with tip. If you're a foodie, you really need to go for dinner here.

Activities
The activity staff at the resort are great... not pushy, will let you do as little or as much as you like. Beach volleyball is a dream! I have never played in sand this soft. It's really powdery. There is a mini-plaza near the lobby (behind the casino) that has everything you need. The prices here are really not much more than in town. We bought what we needed there. There are, however, really pushy sales people near the pool bar and entrance to the buffet restaurant near the beach. If you have a hard time saying 'no', then stay near the north end of the pool. We didn't go to any of the shows in the ampitheatre, but they looked entertaining.

The Beach
It's Dominican. It's white. It's powder. Enough said.

Other Notes
Mosquitoes - Bring mosquito repellant. It rains at least for a bit every day/night, so they do come out. The resort sprays, but you can't get away from them.

Chairs - You will get Germans, Italians, Russians and French people 'reserving' chairs, even though you're not supposed to be allowed to do so. Don't count on getting a lounger under a palapa ever. We saw chairs tied together with towels around the shady spots so that they would be there the next morning. Not worth getting into an argument over.

Spa - the massages are nice. We did the couples massage on the beach for 80 minutes. We paid $180 plus tip. It was very relaxing. Don't waste your money on the pedicures. They're $45 and last about 20 minutes.

We will definitely be back to the Dominican, and probably to this resort.

Room Tip: Block 20 is right by the pool, so you can go to the washroom in your room. It's also further aw...

“It was fun - its a 4 star”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

I just got back from the Catalonia Bavaro, stayed from Jan 28th - Feb 5th
For two people flying out of Ottawa we paid $2178 Ca (taxes included) and found trip on red tag.
I would not pay more than $1100 (taxes included) or you may come home unhappy.

We stayed in Villa 17 - its was close to the steak house and mexican al a cartes. The room was ok. Had a shower, bath, king size bed, single bed, couch, and a chair. We always had hot water and the fridge was always stocked up with beer and water. The pillows are pretty lumpy and there does seem to be a shortage of towels. The cleaning lady would knock on our door to get the towels between 8-830 am which didn't both us, i just got up and handed them to her and we always had fresh clean towels by the time we got back from the pool.beach around 5. Patio had evening sun - which was great for relaxing and drinking a beer before getting ready for dinner.

The food was good. For breakfast we always went to the main buffet, they have the same selection as most resorts - bacon, omlettes, pancakes, good selection of fresh fruit and a bunch of wierd stuff that no one ever seems to eat. For lunch we always ate at the pool snack bar, great pizza and good chicken. We never had to wait in line for pizza and the trays were always full with fresh pizza. We usually went for lunch between 2 and 3 pm. We went to the lunch buffet once and just had the fresh pasta which was good. They also had a bbq around the pool with burgurs, pork, and corn - which i believe i got sick from and don't recommend.
The Japanese, Steak House, and Mexican were all really good. We both had the sirloin steak at the steak house, the steak was good - not as good as the keg..lol but a lot better than a steak you would get in Cuba. The Italian was pretty bad or what i got was pretty bad. Dont get any of the antipasta or fish. I ordered the salmon which was extremely salty. The al a cartes don't require reservations which I really liked as you don't have to waste any time waiting in line making reservations. Don't feel like you have to get there right at 6:30 either, there all pretty big and plenty of room.
Main buffet was similar to what you get in Cuba - however more selection of fresh fruit and veggies.
The pool is very nice. Animation staff provides a great variety of activities around the pool. Of course like most resorts people wake up pretty early to reserve their spots for the day. We only spent two days by the pool and the rest on the beach, As long as you get to the pool by 10:30 you should be able to find pool chairs, if not there are plenty on the beach.
The beach was really great. Lots of chairs to sun bath on. We did a bit of snorkeling on the left side, saw lots of beetle fish, blow fish, schools of silver fish and 4 squids all in one line. If you don't have equipment to snorkel you can put a $20 deposit at the beach hut and they will give you a mask or snorkel and give you your $20 back once you return their equipment. My boyfriend didn't have any money on him so he just gave them his Ipod until he returned the equipment. If you go for a walk to the left side of the beach you eventually pass an old resort, the swimming with the dolphin area, and other resorts. Go between 12-1 to watch the dolphin show from a far for free..lol. We checked the other resorts out and none of them seemed as nice as the Catalonia. There was also a lot more sea weed on the beach. Overall I would say the beaches in Cuba are nicer than in Punta Cana.

The night shows where all very entertaining - i dragged my boyfriend to every single one and we had a blast. The tropical drinks were all pretty good - a little to strong sometimes. They chill the red wine which i didn't like. Never went to the disco, so can't comment.

Overall we had a really good time.I would rate the resort a 4 star - if they changed little things like the pillows, purchased more towels, and better food in the buffets it could be upgraded to a 5.

Room Tip: try not to get a ground floor room - can get very noisy with people slamming their doors and your ha...

“Excellent Vacation”

Just got back on Saturday & wished we could have stayed longer. We took the advice of some of the reviews & upgraded to a privileged suite. The only one left was room 221 in Villa #2 which was the honeymoon suite. My friend & I didn't really care. We got there early & our room wasn't ready yet, so we went to lunch. We got to the room about 1 pm & boy were we surprised. There was a white banner across the door saying "HONEYMOONERS" The room was on the 3rd floor with an amazing view of the beach & ocean. There was champagne & a fruit place for us. We only ate at the buffet 1 night as we were able to eat at all 4 Ala cart restaurants which were all good. We were surprised on Thursday with a special celebratory dinner for honeymooners & anniversary couples which was fantastic. Luis, the waiter in the Italian restaurant, invited us back for dinner on Friday. Every person employed there was always smiling & always saying hola. Luz, the girl who cleaned our room, always made sure we had clean towels, beach towels & a stocked refrigerator. The animation staff was excellent, especially Jose (Speedy Gonzalez) & Clarabell. Also, Glendy from VIP Travel & Jorge at the excursion desk were very helpful. If you have the chance, do the Dolphin Experience. At a cost of $179 each, it is well worth it.The only 2 negatives was the lack of water pressure in the shower & the tourists. We've been to many island resorts & on various cruises & have never met more rude people, especially to the staff. The act as if the own the place butting ahead of people in line & yelling at the staff. There is a language difference & they all try very hard to help you. If they can't, the will find someone who will. There is no reason to yell & belittle anyone. All in all, we are planning to go back next year with more friends.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a privileged suite - quieter & closed to the beach & pool
