I was the winner of a silent auction where the prize was a Melia resort 1 week trip donated by the timeshare owner and didn't know what to expect. The Punta Cana airport is an an open to the breeze location where your jet pulls up like a parking place and you follow a guide into the airport for the normal wait for immigration and luggage. We took a cab to the resort for $30.00 plus tip. 20 minutes. There is a bus company called Blue Travel that we took on our return to the airport for only $7 per person and was very nice.
Upon arrival, we found the employees helpful and were in our room in short order after registering. As an all inclusive resort and going as a quest of a timeshare owner, we paid for our food and drink at this time which was $57.00 per person per day. Trust me. That is cheap for what you can eat and drink. If you are booking on line as a resort/hotel guest, that cost is included in the rate but I noticed that in fine print on Expedia that extra person charges are additional. Thus if they quote $450.00 per day all inclusive, that is for one person.
Note: the first night you will eat at the International buffet which was awesome and delicious. We had no problem getting into any of the a la carte restaurants but we like to eat early at about 6-6:30. You might find the buffet just as good a the the other choices with a great variey every night. There are two options for extra money, the japanese and the steak and/or lobster restaurants at $25 or $39 per person respectively. Lobster was great, steak for me was a little tough for the money. I would recommend the lobster if you go that route.
The initial studio room was pretty nice and convenient to everything however after a couple of days we upgraded to the other side of the resort for the Royal Service. This is an upscale location with a gorgeous full one bedroom suite with full kitchen and a huge jacuzzi. One night we requested the jacuzzi be prepared with aroma oil candles, bath salts, flower petals and filled with warm water ready to relax. Had a nice balcony where I could smoke my cuban cigars, available for purchase at the resort. Don't be afraid to bargain with anyone here.
There is alot to do here. Rather than tell you about all of the excursions and things to do, I found it great that we were able to get personal service from a staff member named Angelica Pichardo. She really made orientation of this huge resort simplified. Her email is angelicaclubmelia@gmail.com. She is very funny and speaks much better English than most of the staff at the resort. I recommend contacting her before you go if she is available.
If you are a beach person, it's beautiful and frankly the ocean is warmer than the pools but we spent most of the time out of the sand. It's gets toasty midday and the pool water feels wonderful. We followed the advice of other visitors and brought our insulated mugs for the limitless drinks available everywhere you look.
While tipping is your choice, these people work hard. I brought 50 singles and that lasted the week. They a have a cute little casino with slots that pay pretty good with most at only.75 maximum bet plus cards and roulette. Good way to kill a few hours before the nightly show at 10PM, if you like.
We loved the weather this time of year and look forward to return trip here soon.
