The Casa de Campo Resort has it all--hotel, great villas, residences (Hollywood actor George Hamilton & designer Oscar de la Renta), tennis, horseback riding, polo, skeet shooting, swimming pools, beaches, water sports, fine dining, buffet restaurant, golf carts (gratis), spa, business center, marina & shipyard, scenic cruises, fitness center, shops & boutiques, destination weddings (Michael Jackson & Lisa Marie Presley), church, amphitheater (past performers include Frank Sinatra, Santana, Sting, Julio Iglesias & Alicia Keys), airport, art school for young local students, arts & crafts facilities for professional artisans, 4 Golf courses, great views, et cetera, et cetera.
The resort is sure to be enjoyed by everyone, especially golfers. It is a golfer’s paradise with 4 great courses including the world famous, Pete Dye, designed course, “Teeth of the Dog.” It is ranked number one in the Caribbean and 43rd in the world by Golf Magazine.
The resort’s lobby is pretty and our room was new, very clean and smartly decorated with a Dominican flavor. The bathrooms are a good size and the rooms have walk-in closets. Housekeeping is efficient and on top everything even though they don’t speak English. The entire resort is nicely decorated and everything appears to be new and clean.
I do have three issues with the resort, though. First, the swimming pools were not heated and the water was freezing. The swim-up bar was empty and for that matter, the main pool areas were completely deserted. I spoke to the manager about this and he agreed with me. He said the two main pools would be heated by the summer, 2012. We both agreed that heated pools attract an entire culture of their own.
The second issue relates to Minitas Beach. This is the main beach at the resort and it is tiny and over crowded. The water is not swimmable due to numerous, large, sharp rocks covering the sea floor. The Caribbean Sea is beautiful to the eye, but impossible to enter. I had to take a 30-minute taxi ride to another town to find a nice beach. Casa de Campo also has a private beach which I was told is “pristine”, but evidently, one has to reserve it months in advance. I never even saw it. What a shame!
I do recommend Casa de Campo to everyone since it has so much to offer. Take your golf cart to Altos de Chavon, a re-creation of a medieval European village. It is the biggest attraction in La Romana, Dominican Republic. Eat at The Beach Club by Le Cirque and be sure to visit the marina, take a sunset cruise and have dinner on the water.
