“holiday from hell”

a horrendous holiday from the start. Got into minibus to go to hotel and they decided to change our minibus half way through the journey. We were turfed out of the bus on the side of the road with our luggage. When we got to the hotel I think we were the only people staying there along with the staff. The entertainment staff were so embarassed about the state of the place they went out of thieir way to make us feel welcome. By the time the weekend came it was over run with people as it was a bank holiday. The hotel posed the following problems:

Cockroaches in the room - actually in the mattress
Dirty bedding
Food was gross - with no cutlery
No towels available
Nothing to do apart from Aqua Aerobics or a spanish lesson
No TV
No mobile phone signal
Ants in the bed - millions of them

We complained to the staff and promptly got on the telephone to ring home and get our parents to try and ring the company who we booked the holiday with. We were then moved to another hotel.

I have got to say that this was such a bad holiday I would never go back to the island. I was gutted as it had cost us quite a lot of money. The hotel information we received said that the hotel was a 4* plus this was not the case. I would not have rated it as a 1*.
For our 4 days spent here before we moved we lived on pringles and toblerone. I have never felt so ill in all my life. This story is by no means an exaggeration I have the photos to prove it. It was more like survival camp. Luckily I watch Bear Grylls thats all I can say. Enjoy

“Love the people”

I vacationed at this resort two years in a row. The last trip was problematic because there was no hot water available in the shower and the toilet ran constantly if you were not standing there to adjust the plunger in the tank. It made me think very seriously about a return trip to that resort.

The food was not bad and the service was always with a bright smile and I really loved that but hot water in the shower for me is a necessity.

“Relaxing Getaway....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2004

Just got back last week.... My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time.... Great weather, a room looking over the ocean, nice people, clean, etc... The food tasted great, but didn't sit well after a few days.... You eat and then run to the bathroom.... We were also the only Americans in the resort.... Most vacationers were local and from Europe... Lots of different languages.... You should really brush up on your Spanish though because English is not quite as popular as most American's are used to.... I would not recommend this hotel to singles, but all in all it's a great place to swim, sun, and relax.... Also the trip to Saona Island is a must... Well worth the extra money.... I would love to visit again, but I don't think my stomach could take it for a long period of time.... We are still trying to figure out why such great tasting food could make us so uncomfortable.... The water they cook in?... The oil and seasoning?.... Not sure, but we definitly were careful not to drink or brush our teeth with the faucet water from the room.... Fortunately there were pleanty of fresh water coolers on all floors of the hotel.... Also we didn't have any problems with a rocky beach unlike the other reviewers commented on.... And most important if you don't have Verizon cellular service you will not be able to use your cell.... Verizon is the only network that gets a signal.... Also, making calls to the US in your room will cost you a fortune....

“the people were great but......................”

I must say that my motto for this hotel is you get what you pay for. The staff were very friendly but the only downside to this place was the salty water that rann from the showers and the HORRIBLE food. The pools were not that clean and if you are looking to have lots of fun do not go there at all there is nothing to do and everything is sooooooo
far away.I must say that the staff do try to go out there way to make you feel comfortable. The disco was really fun. I am a single female 30 years of age and I really did not enjoy the food or that we were no-where but overall I made the best of it but oterwis I would spend a couple more dollars and go somewhere a lil more populated.

“under new managment - even worse”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2004

I have been to other Barceló hotels and expected a quality hotel; instead I got a mediocre hotel managed by new owners. There were three channels on 'satellite' TV, the drinks were all low quality, the rooms were in need of repair ... locks that don't lock, leaks in bath rooms, tubs with paint peeling, brackish water, food wasn't good - just ok, management that seemed overwhelmed by the job of customer service. Management made little to no efforts to address these concerns that customers had. This hotel is now named the Tropical Dream Real and is no longer under Barceló management. The other 'bad reviews written here rang true... wish I'd read them before I booked.
