“Relaxing Getaway....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2004

Just got back last week.... My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time.... Great weather, a room looking over the ocean, nice people, clean, etc... The food tasted great, but didn't sit well after a few days.... You eat and then run to the bathroom.... We were also the only Americans in the resort.... Most vacationers were local and from Europe... Lots of different languages.... You should really brush up on your Spanish though because English is not quite as popular as most American's are used to.... I would not recommend this hotel to singles, but all in all it's a great place to swim, sun, and relax.... Also the trip to Saona Island is a must... Well worth the extra money.... I would love to visit again, but I don't think my stomach could take it for a long period of time.... We are still trying to figure out why such great tasting food could make us so uncomfortable.... The water they cook in?... The oil and seasoning?.... Not sure, but we definitly were careful not to drink or brush our teeth with the faucet water from the room.... Fortunately there were pleanty of fresh water coolers on all floors of the hotel.... Also we didn't have any problems with a rocky beach unlike the other reviewers commented on.... And most important if you don't have Verizon cellular service you will not be able to use your cell.... Verizon is the only network that gets a signal.... Also, making calls to the US in your room will cost you a fortune....

“the people were great but......................”

I must say that my motto for this hotel is you get what you pay for. The staff were very friendly but the only downside to this place was the salty water that rann from the showers and the HORRIBLE food. The pools were not that clean and if you are looking to have lots of fun do not go there at all there is nothing to do and everything is sooooooo
far away.I must say that the staff do try to go out there way to make you feel comfortable. The disco was really fun. I am a single female 30 years of age and I really did not enjoy the food or that we were no-where but overall I made the best of it but oterwis I would spend a couple more dollars and go somewhere a lil more populated.

“under new managment - even worse”

I have been to other Barceló hotels and expected a quality hotel; instead I got a mediocre hotel managed by new owners. There were three channels on 'satellite' TV, the drinks were all low quality, the rooms were in need of repair ... locks that don't lock, leaks in bath rooms, tubs with paint peeling, brackish water, food wasn't good - just ok, management that seemed overwhelmed by the job of customer service. Management made little to no efforts to address these concerns that customers had. This hotel is now named the Tropical Dream Real and is no longer under Barceló management. The other 'bad reviews written here rang true... wish I'd read them before I booked.

“Very nice and close to airport”

I am from Puerto Rico and live in the US. I have been to this resort on 3 different occassions. Once by myself, once with a friend from Maryland (who does not speak a word of spanish) and finally on my honeymoon with my lovely dominican wife Mayra Castro-Rivera. I enjoyed my stay every time. You cannot beat the price with the amenties. The food was good and the drinks were refreshing. I want a cuba libre (rum and coke) or a pina colada now :) I am now going to broaden my horizons and venture out to another Barcelo resort. This week I am going to go to Barcelo Talanquera for a day with my wife. The following week I plan to go to another Barcelo resort, Barcelo Capella. All these resorts are located in Juan Dolio, which is very convenient to the Las Americas airport and Santo Domingo, the capital of the DR. If I was going to stay at one of these hotels and did not have family in the DR, I would fly into the Las Americas airport since it is the closest to the resort. There was a local entertainment group that was very energetic and enthusiastic. At night I went to the disco to enjoy some drinks and dancing. The drinks were again wonderful. The dj played merengue, salsa, bachata and ENGLISH music, yes ENGLISH music. The english music was popular music from the US. By popular I mean popular to young people, which includes me, and can be heard on MTV or VH1. The people who work at the resort are very helpful. The people at the front desk speak the most english. The second time I went with my gringo (non-latino) friend, he enjoyed the stay also. I did not even have to translate the entire time. He picked up on some local sayings. He definitely knew how to say "otro" for another, "no, por favor" for no, thanks, etc I am so excited about going back since I have been on deployment. I highly recommend the DR for your next vacation. Feel free to write me about the DR. Escribeme si quiere mas informacion de la republica dominicana.

“dead but not yet departed”

The Barcelo Naiboa Caribe is the sort of place you’d never visit twice – but I guess if you’re running a package holiday destination you imagine that doesn’t matter; there’ll always be fresh planeload arriving with new, wide-eyed tourists full of excitement and anticipation. Then the newly-weds and newly-retired and the tired steel-workers and their families arrive, and discover that the brochure is about as honest as a politician’s stump speech.

The hotel is wedged between highway 3 and the sea, in the middle of nowhere – you’d need a taxi to Boca Chica, $10 away, to find any life. Built less than ten years ago, the whole place already feels exhausted. The charmless, listless staff can smell the failure, from the dining room with its cursory buffet half roped off to the featureless rooms with their bad lighting, sad décor and aircon which is always about to be fixed manjana.

In the pool float a few sunburnt English matrons from Manchester. They are responding half-heartedly to the increasingly desperate appeals of a young man with a microphone and loud merengue to join in the ‘Aqua Aerobics’. Beyond this lies the beach, a tiny cove between two headlands of sharp, black volcanic rock, too sharply shelving to persuade any swimmers into the violent surf.

And on the other side of the beach is the decaying shell of the Barcelo Embassy Beach, the abandoned sister hotel of this one. It’s gradually being reclaimed by the jungle, even the plaintive ‘Se Vende’ graffettied across it peeling away in the damp heat. Its glassless windows stare bleakly across. It knows it can’t be long before it has company in hotel heaven.
