“Great experience " in the real dominican"”

We recently stayed here for 8 nights in the top main apartment and had a great time with super hospitality from Diane and her staff. No its not a hotel but very comfortable and very different . Would go back anytime. Though off the beaten track , Diane picks up from the airport etc. Anything we asked for she sorted for us. There is also a local " cheap taxi service" just up the road in the local village of Munoz. . Also got to visit the locals and see " the real place". Its so peaceful there and relaxing. . Keep up the good work. Thanks Diane

“Always enjoy my stays”

I've been going and staying at Diane's place in the DR. Suncamp has now become like a home away from home for me. I made many freinds including the operators of the site. I also fell in love with the tranquillity and the cham of the healing ``sangrala``. The greatest aset is certainly the co-hesivenes formed between people who choose this outback way of life. I also fell in love there with a local resident
Try it. You will be surprise yourself by testing your own resourcefulness.

“SuncampDR is the way”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2008

One of the options that Suncamp offers is having a driver pick you up at the airport, you get a guide into town to show you where the grocery store is and a general schooling of how to get around town, for $25 CAD/US. Our driver Victor, waited the extra hour for us at the airport as he hadn't been informed that the flight was late! When we arrived at Suncamp (the road IS as rough as they say :)) it was fully into nightfall. The owner Diane met with us and introduced us to Tijo, the go-to guy in the camp. The nicest man who's always smiling, especially when none of the three of us could figure out how to communicate what we needed. When we asked if there was a way to get food at that time of night, he sadly said no but 20 minutes later he showed up at our apartment with a massive plate of food he'd made himself!

Suncamp is a rustic and authentic feeling place with a very open warm atmosphere. In our room, there was only one light bulb so we were glad we'd brought our own lantern. The spiders are as huge as you've heard, and they just got bigger everytime they showed up to visit us! The rainy season was upon us when we were there but the flash storms only lasted for a couple of days so two days after they stopped, the river cleared up to near crystal quality.

Of course there are higher quality places to stay in Puerto Plata but if you want to experience the real day-to-day lifestyle of most Dominicans, the Suncamp is the way to go!

  • Liked — The feeling that you were experiencing the real Dominican Republic
  • Disliked — The isolation at night

“great vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2006

We stayed at sun camp for a month jan- feb 2006 The key word here is camp. We had a driver pick us up at the airport and traveled for better than an hour on some of the worst roads on earth and got to suncamp around 4 in the morning. And it was a shock. the electricety went off twice and the water once in the first day We had been to the DR twice before and stayed on resorts. This was no resort. But after a little rest and going to the store for food {you need to cook for yoursefl and do everything else also, as there is no service} we got to meet the others who were there. Most spoke French as the owners are from Canada and most of the people who go there are also from Canada. It is quiet and out of the way with not a lot of night life. But it's not hard to get a ride into town if that is what you are looking for. We had a driver take us to many places while we were there at a fair price.{must ride the cable Car} Everyone was friendly and we had a great time. The weather was great {some rain} We plan on a return trip this winter. You can stay at suncamp for a month for less than you can stay at one of the resorts for a week. But you will give up the easy life of having someone take care of you.
If you have question drop me a line
Dick
