This was a wonderful place to vacation in the Dominican Republic. Diane, her son Sam, and all of the people at SunCamp were so gracious and helpful. I took the option of being picked up at the airport ($30) which included a trip to the store to get groceries. Buy matches and a jar to keep them in so they don’t get soggy. You’ll need them to light the burners on the stove. I also opted to pay $5 and have them bring 5 gallons of water to the apartment.
You can use the apartment’s kitchen to make meals or wander down to Papagayo, the restaurant located by the river. This is the gathering place for cocktail hour late afternoon and in the evenings for beer, rum, pool and great conversation. Everyone I met there (some stay six months, some just a few days) was nice, interesting and they made my stay wonderful. Diane also offers guests the opportunity to volunteer in the local Haitian village.
I went horseback riding for a few hours on 3 days; only $20! I also was lucky enough to go on an Eco Walk organized by Diane (the owner of SunCamp) and led by a local farmer. He introduced us to many of the local plants, fruits and trees used for food and medicines. We also got to us taste all of the edibles. Yes, I ate (chewed) on bits of two trees he shaved off with his machete! How great is that!?
The countryside was beautiful and the people I met were wonderful. SunCamp is not a resort, but you won’t get this kind of experience in a resort. Thanks again Diane!
