“Just perfect”

It was our first trip to the Caribbean and we were a little bit concerned over food quality but after reading a lot of reviews on trip advisor settled on VH Resort and can say for us it certainly didn’t disappoint.

The hotel is situated on a secure complex with 6/7 other hotels and is located in the middle of the Golf Course. The beach is a short golf buggy ride/10 minute walk to the beach. Like every hotel the VH has its own dedicated beach section, sunbeds and parasail’s etc. but the hotels trump card is it has its own snack bar on the beach where meals are freshly prepared to order as are the cocktails.

In the mornings there’s a wide variety of food, freshly cooked pancakes we’re amazing, the hotel restaurant themes its food every night so there is always something to look forward too. There are 2 additional restaurants at the hotel pizzeria and the al a carte which is out of this world.

The hotel rooms are of a good quality but nothing amazing, and we spent little time in our room. The maids come in every day, and the sheets are change every few days. The air con is powerful enough to chill the room and there are also a few English channels provided on the tv.

We had very few complaints, we booked through Thompson will NEVER book them again for 2 main reasons, the holiday we booked had access to other hotels facilities which we liked as VH has none. 1 month before we arrived the hotel discontinued this partnership and Thompson rep said there was nothing she could do or was willing to do. Thompson are just there to push the excursions which are the same the local shopping centre are selling at a marked up price of 50-70%.

Excursions we took 3 for $100 each
1. City tour with cable car ride. Which consists of a tour and tasting at the rum factory, mini shopping excursion 3-4 shops, and visit to the botanical gardens (Cable car extra). This is good tour to see the wider area, but as every excursion stops at a shop my tip would be to take a taxi direct to the cable car and gardens.
2. Safari and Waterfall tour. Rum filled trip through the Dominca Villages, forest ending at the 7 waterfalls which a guide will help you climb up through the water. Some physical strength is needed to climb though the guides will help and swimming skills needed.
3. Paradise Island. 2.5 hour coach trip each way but we loved every minute the route takes you through the heart of the island, and the scenery is just fantastic. Paradise island is a rich and deep coral bank that you get to via speed boat. Amazing, very romantic and where I proposed to my fiancée over the coral reef.
One extra trip
I’ve always wanted to go scuba diving and with the hotels offering a free pool taster session thought this would be ideal. The dive school at the hotel is truly awful and put me completely off, but luckily I got talking to a Canadian guest who was training for Master instructor with Diwa Dominicana. For the same price as a single dive through the hotel I got 2 dives with an amazing diving instructor Chi Chi. A lot of the group I dived with where on various open water PADI courses, I felt safe at all times, I’m now part qualified and cannot recommend this school enough.

“Small but very nice”

We stayed at this resort in December and thought it was lovely. It was a very small but quaint property in the Dorado complex. This hotel is not directly on the beach but has a shuttle service to take you there if you decide that you do not want to walk. However it is only a 10 minute walk to the beach. The food is very good here and the staff are excellent. Staying at a smaller resort compared to the larger ones we have noticed that we have more individual attention and that was nice. The pool is small but you don't really need it any bigger than it is. The beach however was okay, it is not nearly as nice as the Punta Cana beaches but they were okay. We enjoyed the hotel, but not sure if we would go back because of the beach (which is the main reason why we travel to the Carribean)

“A Quiet Relaxing holiday !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2011

Writing this review a few months on but felt i should put on here as helps other holiday makers decide where to go.. :)
I went here with my boyfreind , my parents and my sister her husband and 3 year old daughter.
When we first arrived the weather was awful and it rained for 2 days continuosly ( the risk you take in December !) but once that moved on we had lovely hot weather for the rest of the week, and bonus that Gatwick airport shut because of snow we had to stay an extra day !! (at no extra expense) We were all inclusive but we upgraded so we could use their sister hotel which is a short walk away or very short gold buggy trip away ! this gave us more options of places to eat and drink as the Victoria was very very quiet in December when we went ! It was definatley worth it.

Once the weather sorted itself out it was a lovely holiday, i cant fault anything, except be careful if you go out on the balcony and close the door as you cant open it again from the outside and my boyfreind had to climb down the building to get help (which was amusing!)

My neice had a lovely time playing in the sand and watching the entertainment at the sister hotel , and we enjoyed my sisters 30th in style , the staff were really good and excellent with children. We had her birthday meal in the al la carte restaurant which i have to say was VERY VERY GOOD !

We went on a horsriding trip which was ok, ive done better ones in Dominican republic before but be very careful as the guys on the beach sell you a trip riding along the beach and we actually ended up a mountain looking at a waterfall !! They were a great family run little place though !
We didnt do any other excursions as only there for a week and just wanted to lay n the sun.

Food was nice in the buffet, not amazing or anything but nice enough, the pizza place was very good though !! massive selection of drinks and a nice little pool to relax round if want a quiet day or the sister hotels large pool was much more livlier ! #The beach was gorgeous too

Would reccommend this holiday all in all

“Great Find and Affordable”

Because of the blow-up of the Miami airport fuel dump, our flight left late and so we had to spend the night in Puerto Plata. We saw this hotel reviewed on Tripadvisor and decided to try it. For less than $100/nt, we had a large room, very comfortable king size bed, great air conditioning and amazing water pressure in the hot shower! The grounds and common areas are very beautiful and seem to cater to American golfers. Breakfast was in an open air patio with a wide assortment of food offered, including an omelet station. The staff were very friendly and efficient. We will definitely return.

Room Tip: Booking on line was a cheaper than calling direct.

“Quiet, friendly hotel with great staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2011

We stayed for two weeks at the end of January and were surprised at how few people were staying as the hotel is excellent value for money and the staff made us very welcome. Things did get busier over the middle of our stay as it was a local bank holiday and the hotel filled up with Dominican families enjoying a mini-break. That was great fun and added to the cosmopolitan 'mix'.

The rooms were clean and comfortable with plenty of storage but were looking a little tired. However we are in contact with a staff member and they have told us that the hotel is currently closed for a full refurbishment, opening again at the end of this year.

The food is well cooked and perfectly adequate, but could perhaps be a bit more adventurous.

We were playing golf a few times so the position of the hotel in the middle of the golf course and close to the club house was ideal. However, it is only a five minute walk to the hotel beach which has its own beach bar and cafe, or you can jump aboard the shuttle transport if you don't fancy walking. The large shopping complex, with a few bars and restaurants is also only a few minutes walk away, so the hotel is very well placed within Playa Dorada itself.

If you are playing golf we met two great caddies, Rafael and Danny (Nos. 75 and 76) so please ask for them if you can. They are well worth it - I got a hole in one!

Marlyn is the Guest Service Manager and is extremely helpful. She will recommend places to visit, or book you into other hotels/restaurants should you wish to explore further afield. It was my birthday and we spent a glorious afternoon and evening at a place called Embocca along the coast at Cabarete, where we lounged around on wonderfully comfortable sun loungers, or under shaded open-sided cabins, watching the kite-surfers, and then had a truly memorable meal, all at an extremely reasonable cost.

If you are looking for nightlife and entertainment then this isn't the hotel for you, but if you want a quiet, relaxing holiday amongst like-minded people then this hotel fits the bill nicely.

All in all it was a great holiday, and we shall certainly be back next year if at all possible.
