It was our first trip to the Caribbean and we were a little bit concerned over food quality but after reading a lot of reviews on trip advisor settled on VH Resort and can say for us it certainly didn’t disappoint.
The hotel is situated on a secure complex with 6/7 other hotels and is located in the middle of the Golf Course. The beach is a short golf buggy ride/10 minute walk to the beach. Like every hotel the VH has its own dedicated beach section, sunbeds and parasail’s etc. but the hotels trump card is it has its own snack bar on the beach where meals are freshly prepared to order as are the cocktails.
In the mornings there’s a wide variety of food, freshly cooked pancakes we’re amazing, the hotel restaurant themes its food every night so there is always something to look forward too. There are 2 additional restaurants at the hotel pizzeria and the al a carte which is out of this world.
The hotel rooms are of a good quality but nothing amazing, and we spent little time in our room. The maids come in every day, and the sheets are change every few days. The air con is powerful enough to chill the room and there are also a few English channels provided on the tv.
We had very few complaints, we booked through Thompson will NEVER book them again for 2 main reasons, the holiday we booked had access to other hotels facilities which we liked as VH has none. 1 month before we arrived the hotel discontinued this partnership and Thompson rep said there was nothing she could do or was willing to do. Thompson are just there to push the excursions which are the same the local shopping centre are selling at a marked up price of 50-70%.
Excursions we took 3 for $100 each
1. City tour with cable car ride. Which consists of a tour and tasting at the rum factory, mini shopping excursion 3-4 shops, and visit to the botanical gardens (Cable car extra). This is good tour to see the wider area, but as every excursion stops at a shop my tip would be to take a taxi direct to the cable car and gardens.
2. Safari and Waterfall tour. Rum filled trip through the Dominca Villages, forest ending at the 7 waterfalls which a guide will help you climb up through the water. Some physical strength is needed to climb though the guides will help and swimming skills needed.
3. Paradise Island. 2.5 hour coach trip each way but we loved every minute the route takes you through the heart of the island, and the scenery is just fantastic. Paradise island is a rich and deep coral bank that you get to via speed boat. Amazing, very romantic and where I proposed to my fiancée over the coral reef.
One extra trip
I’ve always wanted to go scuba diving and with the hotels offering a free pool taster session thought this would be ideal. The dive school at the hotel is truly awful and put me completely off, but luckily I got talking to a Canadian guest who was training for Master instructor with Diwa Dominicana. For the same price as a single dive through the hotel I got 2 dives with an amazing diving instructor Chi Chi. A lot of the group I dived with where on various open water PADI courses, I felt safe at all times, I’m now part qualified and cannot recommend this school enough.
