The surroundings are beautiful, the hotel clean, the staff friendly. If comfortable leave the resort and walk into town.
Perhaps Candido will meet you on the road to the village. We've met him on two trips now. He'll show you around the village and invite you to his home. We give him $10 each time he escorts us. If possible bring items for the school - paper, pens, markers. The students and teachers were very grateful. On the holiday weekend many Dominicans stayed at the resort. It was good to see all the children having so much fun but the resort really couldn't accommodate the numbers - long lines for buffet, running short of food and not being able to keep up with beach towels. If you are offended by occasionally seeing a prostitute with an 'old white guy' then this is not the place for you.

“The Majority Riu'les!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

First time stay at a Riu Resort. I believe this resort is not as elaborate as many of it's other locations but it is very quaint. Great location, private beach/cove, great lay out, cute villa's, clean, good food and variety, energetic and enthusiastic entertainment team, lot's of bars,(no overdrunk people!) nice pools, lots of beach and pool chairs,( I really loved all the trees and vegetation everywhere) easy and fast check in and out, etc.......etc,,,,,,all those things I read before selecting a great deal for a week vacation were true. More than 90% positive reviews cannot be wrong. Good value, Great service. All you really need.

Some of the extra touches we liked....hand sanitizer service at the resturant entrance done to everybody! Also at washroom during weekend busy period. Also hand sanitizer for cooking staff convienetly located at their cooking station and they used it often! We tried all the resturants and the food was about the same at each place. Just different decor.
Every resturant has plenty of beach and ocean views. We had a super waiter Raphael and he took great care of us every time we ate the buffet. The room patios and balcanies were ideal.
The pool area had plenty of quiet time during the week. Noon to Three. The music was very controlled, There were lots of activities for all interests. I especially liked the five pm step class with Kiko and the pool aerobics with Choopra. The grounds keepers were constantly racking and cleaning. The buffets were good with lots of variety. (One reviewer could only find fried food and pasta? C'mon! everyday fresh fruit/salads/veggies/soups and much much more)

Some of the opportunities we saw....Please new toasters! It takes forever to make and usually have to run the bread through twice to crisp and brown it nice. Al-la-carte resturants...not worth it. Steak house rib steak was thin and grissly. I heard the lamb was nice. Italian had a nice pork tenderloin but the fish was tasteless. Just like everyone says, you buffet your cold and hot appetiizers and only get served your entree and dessert . The red wine is like Welches grape drink and the white is like flavoured water. I would reccommend that they at least offer a bottled wine at the a la carte to make the experience a little more upscaled.
The Beds are really hard! and the inside of the dressing drawers and night tables are dusty. Would reccommend taking drawer liners if you like to use them. Never ran out of hot water! Would really like to see some sort of guide service to the various buildings. When you arrive you get a map and wonder around trying fiqure out which way to go. Especially hard at night.

We loved the Dominicana show, the Africa show was very elaborate ( very smokey), the Forklore show was also very good. We never got to see the Michael Jackson show but we did manage to get to a beach party at the Mumbo since ours was cancelled. Kids show nightly and I think it burns them out for bedtime.

We did not go into the ocean but dit use the paddle boats. No big waiting time. Would have liked to see little catamaram rides like other resorts have. Yes Mumbo beach is best. Bachata has a nicer looking pool, but the one with the swim up bar is unusually warm?! LOL! Really liked the Merengue one but it is harder to get in and out of via ladders only.
I did get some kind of bug bites around by ankles but I have no idea what was doing it. I did see them spraying the area so they do their best to control it. After a lot of rain the grounds get saturated. (Never rains in Dominican! LOL) Sometimes it can affect the plumbing and septic systems.

Yes on the weekend the resort really fills up with locals. But the resort seems to give priority to the foreign guests. And for the most part makes certain that everyone is respectful to each other. If it is too much for you, plan your excursions on the weekends or spend more time on the beach.

Amaryilis who works for water excurions is so wonderful you really should
book with her. Also Valentino in the lobby can hook you up with a great taxi trip to the city and he is a very good guide. We also used James to book a horse back riding trip for a good price with Lorilar. Very nice horses and guides Angel and Alex were helpful.

Lastly the vendors at each end of the beach are friendly and really appreciate small gifts ie: some small tolietries, pop (7-up!) really anything for their families is terrific. Melissa by the Mumbo huts gave me a fair price to braid my hair. Much cheaper then the resort prices. Everything almost free...what do you want to pay. HEE HEE HEE!

The vendors they bring into the lobby have a higher quality of items, but don't let them go under their tables to bag it because they switch it out with one that has flaws that the ones on the table did not have!

I enjoyed the Dominican very much and will return again,,,maybe to Punta Cana because I like to travel to different locations every year. The world is big and life is short, One thing for certain, I will definately not hesitate to stay at a Riu Resort!

Room Tip: After the rain the 1200 series had some real flooding zones. The 1000 series by the beach have reall...

“What a mistake”

My only mistake was we only booked 7 days should of booked 2 weeks. upon arrival envelops where ready for us, but quickly noticed that our rooms where on ground floor talk to manager who was standing with us he quickly fixed the problem an we got second floor like we asked.. Rooms where kept clean daily by Leonarda she did an exceptional job at keeping it clean an supplying every thing we She also decorated our ooms with ballons , flowers, towel animals on the day of my husband Birthday.BEach not bad considering big rocks but who cares move on the the mambo beach is better.A la cartes did the steakhouse not bad if u want a good steak stay home..Resorts was constantly kept clean , employees alwasy there to help you. Buffet restaurant was ok you could always find some thing to eat so no complaints..Animation teams was great, I can still hear HE HE HE.Tina Turner, Chicken legs,,chicky monkey, especially Crazy Tequilla you never know what he was up to..Made us laugh everytime we seen him. To all the team keep up the good work.
Bars where exceptional anything you wanted they made it.Did 3 excursion while there..
Booked deep sea fishing with scubadiving company situated in hallway, caugth 5 dorado even if the waves where 20 ft high. City tour with Puerto plata taxi cost us 60.00 for 8 days for 5 hour tour which sandy did a marvellous job, Book the mud boogies with Sunwing now thats mud enjoyed every minute of it even if it rained all day what the hell your gona get dirty an wet anyways.lol defenitly bring old clothes an old runners for this I had to leave my runners back at resort cause they were full of mud an wet. Not good when u return to northern ontario with crocks walking in snow..The only delay was at Puerto plata airport they are defenitly in need of better cordination..Held back 2 hours cause of security issue so wasnt to be blamed on Sunwing..Otehr wise go with an open mind We did again we were a group of 8 adults an enjoyed the 3 Rius very much. And for all the complaint about the local comming in I dunno where u guys stayed but didnt see any problems from them at all..or any noise for that fact..

“Not Bad but Not Great - overall maybe Just ... just Average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Looking at the reviews of the past 2-3 weeks I found some which I agreed with and some which seem odd to me (too positive), therefore I decided to write my own and maybe help somebody in making a choice of whether to go or not.

We have been fortunate enough to travel quite extensively all over the world and have some benchmarks to compare to, but maybe on the other hand this is to a certain degree unfortunate - in that we will always find somewhere where the food is better or the weather was better and so on. Hence I have tried to keep my opinion as impartial as possible and hope that I have succeed to do so in this review.

We returned - my wife and I - from a full two weeks at Riu Merengue in end of January.

A cell phone charger was stolen out of the luggage that came out of the conveyor so the arrival to Puerto Plata airport was not picture perfect. I guess this gave us a heads up.

Second warning - tap water: we were told by the local tour rep on the way to the hotel to avoid even flushing teeth in the tap water, so be careful / warned.

The check-in was fine - no issues even in the middle of the night. Nothing fancy but efficient.

The room we were shown to had it's air con damaged (the man who accompanied us to the room admitted that he could not turn it on) but becuase this was the middle of the night, we agreed that somebody would come in the morning to check and fix it. Needless to say, this did not happen, even though we called the reception several times and told them in person about this. It was not so important to us however, because the outside temperatures did not really require the air conditioning at all. I actually managed to turn it on a couple of times by myself during the stay (by slightly whacking the thermostat which did the job....). When it did work you could not really tell the difference, so maybe it is not very efficient anyway? It may be an issue when temperatures are high in the summer so be aware of this.

The rooms are a bit worn and dated. The beds are not very comfortable (two twins put together to form something larger but they tend to move apart, so forget about being close to the other person unless you share one bed). The bathroom has also seen it's golden age some time ago, but it worked. Since we did not spend too much time in the rooms or bathroom then these issue were not so important but remember the good times of these are in the past.

The environments of this hotel are very good - for this I would give the hotel very good ratings. The grounds are well tended to, it's very picturesque, well maintained. The beech is wide and you can easily find a spot. We liked also the side beech in the afternoon where there are no chairs nor any hotel service, this part is shaded from the constant winds, the water is calmer and all in all it seemed nicer there. However around 4-5 pm most fine days there were some short wedding ceremonies held there so keep that in mind. The sand is brownish and rough. You need shoes to go into the water because of the rocks and corals and strong currents which sweep you off your feet. The pools are ok, but again seemed slightly used.

The restaurants are ok but nothing special. The food is generally edible but repetetive, so you have to be very carefull and choose what you take. The first week is fine, the second week you start looking around for something new but it's not there, so you simply tend to eat less.... The speciality restaurants are nothing special - they are situated in same outside open bar next to the beach, share a common buffet, so the only course which is specific for that thematic restaurant is the main course. For the Steak House I would recommend the beef fillet which is pretty good, skip the rest. In the Italian part - go for the same: the beef fillet, skip the rest. Therefore if you go there only once to each it will be sufficient. The wines are quite bad. I strongly recommend to avoid them.

Drinks - all local stuff (even if you saw them pouring out of a brand name bottle this was not the original stuff inside the bottle). The local rum should be therefore good but it did not seem to be very good. Maybe their supplier of this rum is some local cheap distillery, but the taste was not very good. It all seemed to taste more/less the same. Out of all the drinks the only ones that I would say are ok, even good are: Mojito, Caipirihna (not made with Cachacha but something local but still drinkable) and Margarita - with an accent on the Mojito. I think most guests in the hotels realized this fact, because several times during these two weeks you couldn't get any Mojito's anywhere in all three hotels in the afternoon becuase they were out of the mint leaves.... The beer was basically tasteless, the wine - forget it totally. The soft drinks all very sweet and taste the same regardless what you took.

Entertainment - I would skip it. I appreciate the efforts of the staff, but I think they should rethink their program, maybe do less live shows each day but improve the quality, whilst giving more live bands and local merengue, bachcata and salsa music to which to dance to on the floors.

The weather there at this time was quite good - temperatures were perfect (around 26-28 deg C day and 22-23 at night). Maybe we had a larger then normal rainfall (it rained 6 out of the 14 days we were there) but for the most part it was not very heavy. It only poured for two days flooding some parts of the hotel grounds. I came back tanned brown after these two weeks even though I don't lie all day long on the beech chairs anyway, so for fair skinned people this is perfect and you don't need more.

The seas were very choppy and rough and this is normal here. Therefore it is not easy (maybe just possible but difficult and risky) to snorkel. Besides this, the sea water is unclear, visibility no more then 1,5 m (about 5 feet) and not much to see anyway. We went scuba diving, but this proved also very extreme (suffice to say that all felt bad getting to the dive site, some did not dive a second time, even the dive master felt a bit sick) but this is the norm here because this is the open Atlantic and not the Carribean. I would not recommend diving here - not much to see.

The attractions of the areas are abundant (the island is beautiful) but not accesible because the trip offers are very few and choices limited to "safari in truck or quad in countryside" - some variation of this theme in 5-6 different trips offered, or "beautiful islands" and 4-5 different variations of this. We went to the Paradise Island trip - nothing fancy, but if you are lucky, have good weather and not too big crowds that day, then trip is relaxing and a welcome break from hotel monotony. The second was the VIP Samana tour also known as El Limon, or Whale watching, or Bacardi Island - it's all more/less the same. Full day trip, a bit expensive (130 USD per person) but you see a couple of things condensed into one trip. Unfortunately for some reason we did not go whale watching even though the season is oficially opened since 15th January (we went the 21st) instead spent 3 hours on Cayo Levantando (Bacardi Island) which is just another tropical island and beech (seen a couple of nicer island already in my life so was not thrilled, but for somebody who has not yet been to one it's a nice place to see). Everybody whom you speak to discourages you to try to travel alone and after our first and second heads up we tended to agree (at the ends of the hotel beeches you have great big signs in four languages saying that you are crossing this point at your own risk and responsibility - something we have never seen anywhere else so far in the world...)

Conclusion: this hotel is ok for a no thrills, relaxing, mind numbing holiday of 1 week. The second week seems to drag on. Don't expect very high standards of food or drinks, but if you are carefull you will find something edible and drinkable and might not suffer if you regularly keep your hands clean. Don't expect any special attractions and you will be ok here.

Happy holidays
Jarek
