“Decent hotel for kids but not much for adults”

This is our fifth year going to the Dominican and our third time in Puerto Plata. We truly enjoy this country and the people. This is our first VH hotel and our first stay at the Gran Ventana. We liked how close it was to the airport. When we arrived, only two of the three rooms were ready and they separated one of the rooms. We were on a family vacation so staying together was important for us.

We stayed by the "quiet pool" and find out later what a godsend it is to stay there. All the rooms were suites and quite spacious. The only thing about the rooms was that they did not have dressers to put the clothes in. No closets, just a few small drawers.

The staff there was generally very friendly especially the bartenders. They made us feel like family and we reciprocated the affection. The a la carte restaurants we really nice. We really enjoyed the Italian one. The service was always stupendous and the food was decent for the Dominican.

The hotel does seem to wind down at around 10pm and there is no disco on the premise. If adults are looking for late night entertainment they will need to head into the square.

“Good Vacation”

This was our first vacation so we have nuthign to compare it too. so here goes...
Travel rep at hotel was not friendly at all and did not answer our questions, and if she did it was bs!!!!!
Service was great when we arrived had drinks waiting. Bell hop took us right to our room.
Rooms are very outdated.. I am talking about being stuck in the 80's.. Beds were hard but its okay, i like them that way. had no hot water first night but was fixed in the am. AC worked great.. actually woke up freezing. One thing to note is that nuthign dried, being on the patio or hanging everything was damp.
Pools.. main pool was busy, swim up service was okay. the quiet pool is definetly the place to be if your not on the beach. and its bartender was great.
Food.. Its was everything i could have asked for. I tried everything, and didnt have an issuse of beign bored at all. They had pork chicken, beef. lots of rice, and lots of vegys. Alacarte were okay but different form everyday food i was used too. The grill was the best alacarte, recomend the surf and turf.
Beach was the nicest in the playa dorada complex hands down. no garbage, no weeds, everythign is exteremely well kept. you did have to wake up early to get a hut. The vendors are outta this world, i havent seen anything like this before... a non stop berrage of people wanting you to buy something. no one bugged us for a timeshare.

Overall we would go back, and bring our kids. there was nuthing to do after 10pm. no existent night life, unless u left the resort.

“Could have been the "Med"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Overall an enjoyable holiday but.............

Thomson Airways: NO FREE WATER SERVED despite it being an 8hr 40min. flight. Tui clearly do not consider the health and well being of their passengers to be a priority particularly when bearing in mind the possibility of DVT.
On screen free entertainment was attrocious, the films were rubbish as were the games and were clearly an "incentive" to buy the upgrade package which wasn't any better.
Only one hot meal is served so I suggest buy your own snack and water before boarding the aircraft otherwise it will cost you an "arm and a leg" on board.
When dining, insist the cabin crew tell the ignorant moron sitting in front of you to return their seat to the upright position! The Tui cabin crew do not appear to have been schooled in this basic requirement.

Sun loungers:
Despite what is said to the contrary people do reserve them using the "German method" - towels. The Canadians are particular keen on this reserving up to 12 beds and several parasols at a time even if they are not occupied for some hours later. They are ignorant to the needs of others and care only about themselves. "I'M ALRIGHT JACK" - I believe the termanology is!!! THE POOL AND BEACH STAFF DO NOT ENFORCE THE RULE THAT RESERVING LOUNGERS IS NOT ALLOWED AND THAT TOWELS WILL BE REMOVED.
Bars:
The pool, beach and quiet bars are now open from 10am until midnight. The entertainment bar is only open at night. The beer and local spirits are good as is the choice of cocktails - nothing is watered down. Canadians tip everytime they go to the bar although it is NOT necessary, perhaps it's because their thermal flasks hold the equivalent of a rubbish bin and they replenish them frequently!
Restaurant:
Good service and a good selection of food available. Bacon is only served at breakfast on alternative days. If you're lucky you'll be there on the one day rum and raisin ice cream is served at lunch. Chips (fries) are served everyday. Bird netting keeps most of the little pests out but where there is a little hole the resourceful ones will get in, but do not worry, they are not a problem.
Beach:
Good clean beach but finding a useable lounger and a decent spot may be a problem if you haven't beaten the Canadians to it. The currents in the sea are strong so keep an eye on children. The beach vendors are plentiful but expensive - there is a little bartering but not much.
Entertainment:
Take your own. The entertainment is the holidaymakers young children doing the hokey cokey on stage EVERYNIGHT followed by nothing. There are no professional entertainers.
Generally:
The resort is kept spotlessly clean despite the efforts of the holidaymakers. The staff are helpful and pleasant. The cleaners are first class and worthy recipients of tips. Rooms etc are to a very good standard following a refurbishment.

As I said in the title, it could have been the Med. There is nothing that epitomises this is the Dominican Republic.

Room Tip: Block 3 quietish Block 1 ok Block 3 pool facing is noisy. End rooms quiet

I just got back from my holiday only there for 1 wk.I cant say enough the service i got from the resort staff was great, they are always cleaning my room was spotless flat screen tv .The only real complaint i had was the food i found was a little over cooked for me but with a large variety of things to eat after a couple of days i found things to eat that i enjoyed . The one thing i really enjoyed about this holiday is we went on a dune buggy ride which we booked threw a local from the beach named Cesar i highly recommend him . The trip took us threw waste lands of sugar cane fields and mountains shanty towns tiny little villages its was something that i will never forget.I took dollar store items with me crayon .pencils, toys ect... and left on bed in morning for made . Anyways i could go on and on all i can say is i will be back had a great time .

Room Tip: Take building by pool most updated close to everything

“Great resort. Food excellent.”

Hi Us and another couple came to this resort Feb. 3-10/12. We had an awesome time because this hotel is great. The rooms are adequate and super clean. TV reception great. The food at the daily buffet was "great". We did not try any of the three specialty restaurants as we prefer eating when we want rather than the reservation bit. Great variety at the Buffet all week long. The service in the Buffet was awesome!!!! Actually, the service everywhere at the Resort was excellent, friendly and accomodating. The pool was awesome. Very large with plenty of chaise lounges for everyone. There were also lots of fun things to do (if you wish to) with the Pool entertainment staff. The nightly entertainment was very good. We found it to be a very very relaxed Resort. Everyone friendly and accomodating there to please you. We would go again in a heartbeat. We travelled with Thomas Cook *jazz* (Sunquest) and we had awesome service, incuding a meal with wine. Hope you enjoy your stay too. Donna and Tim from Hamilton.
