“Beautiful, romantic and rustic.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2009

Tia's Bamboo Cottages, Restaurant and Bar in Watton Waven in the beautiful Roseau Valley are a rustic and romantic alternative to the ubiquitous holiday villa. Set in lovely densely planted gardens above a pretty river, you'll stay in a little bamboo cabin with shutters, instead of windows, and have a choice of hot sulphur pools for a refreshing and relaxing bathe - especially beneficial after a day in the hills.
Relax in the bar with a view into the valley and watch the abundant bird life as you drink your cold Kubuli beer or take it back to the hammock on your verandah and chill.
The bar also doubles as a restaurant but at the time of writing, which was off-season, Tia was having difficulty in organising a cook but we did get an evening meal in a place a few mintues away in the village (not great, though). Tia assured us that he is sorting out the catering arrangements though, and you can be sure that a guy who has the drive and determination to single-handedly build, and beautifully maintain, such a great place, will solve the catering problem soon.
Waking to the sound of the birds at dawn followed by a bath in a hot sulphur spring and a good breakfast was a great start to the day.
If you are turned on by the pampered luxury and air-conditioning of a swanky hotel, this is not the place for you - you haven't got the romanticism and love of nature that this place demands.
With no lock on the cabin doors, one concern might be that there appeared to be nowhere to safely leave your valuables when going out for the day. There was the facility to put a padlock on the door and Tia can probably let you have one - if that worries you, check first.
That last point (and the limited choice of places to eat) probably makes this an overnight stop while exploring the Roseau Valley and environs, or a longer stop for the day back-packer, rather than a choice for a longer stay.
Tia does fill you with confidence though - when he said "Come to me immediately if you have any problems and I will sort them out" - you felt that he meant it. I liked him and will long remember our overnight stay.

“Rustic, romantic in tropical paradise setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2009

I think my photographs say it all! The fact that there are only 2 rustic bamboo cottages on this tropical garden and beautifully landscaped property makes Tia's truly exclusive - and guests have the 4 hot sulphar pools all to themselves! Do take note of the fact that meals at the restaurant have to be pre-booked and that there are no other restaurants in the near vicinity. The nearest supermarket is in Rosseau. I would highly recommend a short stay at Tia's for anybody visiting Dominica, centrally located for people planning to do the Boiling Lake walk and, having myself stayed at several other places, I found the bamboo cottages at Tia's, the lovely setting and the sulphar pools the best eco-and budget-friendly accommodations in Dominica and so much more than what the others claim to be.

“A rural retreat where you bathe in naturally warm pools”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2007

We loved our three night stay here, and were made very welcome by Tia, who built the cottages, and his cousin, Joan, who runs the place with style. The bamboo cottages are set in a beautiful garden going down to the stream and you really feel a part of nature. You go to sleep to the sounds of the forest and rushing water, and breakfast watching the banana quits (pretty yellow breasted birds) battling it out to eat from Joan's bird feeder. You only have a cold water tap and shower (no towels either), but who needs more if you have a choice of three naturally warm pools in which to bathe - each a different temperature so you can choose just how hot you want your water. Afterwards you can relax in your hammock. Dinner consists of large platefuls of delicious local produce, and is even better when washed down by a glass of Joan's home-made Bullet rum punch. If you are looking for simple, friendly accommodation that is a bit different to anything you will find elsewhere, this is the place for you. If you need internet access, room service, glass in your windows and an extensive menu, then you may prefer to leave it to others who will appreciate it properly!

(Joan also runs Le Petit Paradis, just up the road, which we are sure would be equally nice, but we didn't experience it first hand.)

“My best bath ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2007

if you ever get a chance to visit the Island of Dominica, you must not leave before taking a hot spring bath. infact one such bath is not enough. and the place to take this bath is at Tia's Bamboo. My friend and i bathe in Tia's pool where water is piped from the warm sulphar springs. it is like some one has set you a hot bath with the water at the right temprature, on the day we visited we were the only one bathing and was allowed to bathe for as long as we wanted.I travel a lot and i can put this experience down as the best i ever had. P.S Drink a bullit for me (best rum punch ever).
