“Great stay - Artistic & Inspiring”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I spent a week at Cocoa Cottages on my own in January and loved it. This is the anti-hotel - no keycards, no anonymity, no need to lock your door at night... guests and staff are refreshingly real and friendly. The owner Iris is amazing and ever accessible for information on the island or just good conversation. The rooms are beautiful with a handmade feel, very creative, colorful and clean. Plus everywhere you are surrounded by rainforest! I stayed in the "Patchouli Room" which stands alone and even has its own front porch. The home cooked meals here are better than anything I found in town - all locally sourced ingredients and enjoyed around a roundtable (repurposed from old cable spools and barrels!) with fellow travelers. There is even homemade chocolate made right on the property - experience Willie Wonka magic if you're lucky enough to poke your nose into the chocolate room! Of course you don't want to spend all day in your room, so it's also nice that the cottages are located in the center of popular island activities. (My personal favorite was Extreme Dominica Canyoning, which is right next door!) If you choose to spend your mornings and evenings here, you and your soul will be well fed.

“a place of light and grace”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

my wife and i just spent a week at cocoa cottages to celebrate my 60th birthday- our room was just beautiful- wood and light and color- surrounded by a lush jungle of all the plants you have in vases at home except here they grow to 40 feet on their own- at night we fell asleep with the shutters open listening to the sounds of the crickets and tree frogs occasionally broken up by a huge downpour of rain on the tin roof that would last for a few minutes- we'd awaken to morning light and the smell of good coffee- breakfast was always wonderful- a bowl of local fresh fruit- papaya, star fruit, orange/ grapefruit, watermelon, pineapple- eggs, local bread with freshly made jams- we'd talk with the morning cook, Joan, who has spent years on the island- learning about the culture -our days were spent on hikes in the jungle to lakes/ waterfalls/ hot springs- twice we went snorkeling at Champagne Beach- a lovely place to spend a day- food, tables, view, and you can rent equipment cheap-iris would help us plan our day adventure and arrange for a guide if needed-- Cocoa cottages is an excellent base from which to make great day forays into the natural beauty of the southern part of the island- in the evening we often ate at Cocoa Cottages with Iris who would prepare a splendid meal from local produce= always beautifully arranged- in the evening we'd talk of our day or sometimes play music- if you play jazz piano you will make Iris very happy- a wonderful peaceful refuge

“Great, unique place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

We only spent one night at Cocoa Cottages, but would have liked to stay much longer. I mostly can only echo what others have said - Iris is great (helpful, but not overbearing), the group dinners are great, as the place attracts a well-traveled interesting crowd, rooms are unique and homey. Breakfast was kind of expensive (I thought it was included in the room price), but that egg was cooked perfectly. The sounds at night are fantastic, great way to fall asleep.

You won't need a car to get here - from Roseau, hop on the bus to Trafalgar, they'll drop you off right outside the Cottages. I think you can walk (about 30 mins) up to the falls, although we didn't have time. Extreme Dominica (canyoning) is right next door - just make sure you book with them separately, in addition to booking your room.

“Paradise of food, comfort, and hospitality!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

We found this gem by chance, a collection of "cottage" like rooms appointed in a jungle-boutique style, complete with mosquito netting (although not really needed!). Rooms are comfortable, and in keeping with Dominica's natural style. Sounds of the jungle permeate during the night-time, including the hypnotic sounds of the regular rains.
The hospitality from Iris -- the owner, and staff are amazing. Iris takes special pride in creating the warm feeling and amazing foods to nourish your mind, body and spirit!
Iris also makes chocolate -- fantastic!

We fully intend to return to this location -- as the location works for us -- close to Rosseau, water, the mountains including the boiling lake, Trafalgar Falls, Middleham falls and more. We walked to each of these sites (ne: hiked in some cases) and thouroughly enjoyed it all.

This is a place you will love especially if you are open to the relaxed and real Dominica.

Room Tip: All rooms are great!
