I think most of the previous reviews pretty much cover a lot of the details of staying here, but I thought I could add a few helpful tips from our recent stay.
The Zandoli is definitely small, but this adds to the enjoyable experience of staying there. In fact, the previous two, and accurate, reviews were written by guests that we met there and whose company we enjoyed on our stay. There are only five rooms, two on the top floor, #4 and #5, and three below them, #1, 2, and 3. #5 and #3 face towards Grand Bay and problalby have the best views , #1 and #4, face more across the bay out to ocean and also have face the road, which is a good 100 feet or more from the main building. The rooms are nothing fancy, but they are clean and comfortable.
The one thing that surpised us was the quality of the food, which was fantastic. As mentioned by other reviewers, the hotel was started by Linda, with her late husband, and now her daughter Jen is both cooking and doing everything else there. Jen co-owned a restaurant in Toronto where she was also the chef, and she has put her background to good use here. Yes, the meals are not inexpensive and there are no other options unless you want to drive to Roseau, but unusual for Dominica, you are getting a gourmet dinner here every night, and Jen uses her contacts, knowledge, and creativity to effortlessly whip up great meals in which some of them have ingredients that are not easy to find elsewhere on the island. At the bar, not only does Jen make a mean rum punch, but she uses her skills to come up with delicious and clever drinks every night, like watermelon daiquiris with basil. Both Jen and Linda are helpful in every way and can provide you with suggestions, contacts, and arrangements for any activity you are interested in doing or suggest something if you are not sure what to do.
The Zandoli, like many inns on Dominica, is somewhat remote in its location, as there is nothing immediately near it in terms of other restaurants or hotels or major sites. However, even though it is about a half hours drive from Roseau, the road between the Zandol and Roseau, while just as curvy and hilly as any other road in Dominica, is very well paved and a relativley smoooth drive, one that can even be done at night by someone not used to the roads there, unlike many of the other roads there. The access from there to Scott's Head, Roseau, Laudat, etc. is just as easy to get to from there as any other hotel in Dominica. In fact, we stayed in a hotel just outside of Roseau after leaving the Zandoli, but we could have just as easily stayed at Zandoli and done the same activities.
Definitey worth staying here if you are going to Dominica!
