“Take Garden Tour but Avoid the Restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2011

This hotel is rated as the most elegant in the Roseau Valley, which is four miles east of the capital of Roseau. We did not stay there but took a tour of the gardens -$10 and well worth it- and had dinner there, after the concierge claimed that it was "the best resteraunt" on hte island nation of Dominica. FALSE. The meal was pedestrian at best with small portions and way too pricey. We spent a month in Domicia and and dined at several places that were much better and cheaper Also the room rate there seemed exhorbitant ,since we were staying down the road a bit for $60 less per night. .

Papillote Rainforest Restaurant has been recognized through the years as one of the best restaurants on the Nature island of Dominica by professionals of the industry, International and Caribbean Media, the majority of our guests, visitors and Dominican people

Our Rainforest Restaurant offers for lunch a wide selection of delicious local dishes such as callalou soup, flying fish platters, dasheen puffs and our famous steamed fish wrapped in banana leaf.

Our full dinner includes a soup, salad, main course and dessert for only US $33 (+taxes and service charge). Our guests enjoy our M.A.P for only US $45 (+taxes and service charge) per day and start each day with a full breakfast and dinner with a different menu choice each night.

We offer four acres of natural trails and amazing botanical gardens, private natural hot and cold pools and waterfalls and have been called "the epitome of a nature retreat". Our price range for charming rooms, spacious suites and many features that are included is absolutely reasonable!

Thank you.

“Paradise on Earth”

It just wouldn't be appropriate to write anything negative about this place. Sure, the accomodations are basic; our bed was actually uncomfortably hard. No TV, no phone in the room (what blessing!). We found a fridge, a coffee maker (but no coffee), and plenty of bottled water. But the location (in the middle of a botanical garden/rainforest) is difficult to describe - you have to experience it to believe it. Sitting in one of the hot natural mineral pools at night, looking up at the stars and listening to the cicadas and tree frogs - you can only relax and forget all your earthly sorrows. Anne, the proprietress, who - as she explains - "grew old here" is one of the most gracious, kind, congenial people you'll ever meet. The staff - though some were definitely reserved - were always helpful and concerned about our wellbeing. The hotel is located on a steep hill, so there are plenty of stairs to climb. No problems with bugs at all - and the "noise" from the hydro-electric plant, mentioned in some reviews, was certainly not audible from the Breadfruit Suite. If you are looking for modern luxury, don't stay at the Papillote. But if you are looking for a peaceful, clean, comfortable retreat in the middle of the rainforest, surrounded by the most amazing vegetation on earth, this is your place. We simply did not want to leave, and have been having withdrawal symptoms after our return home.

“A special place for a couple of nights”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2011

The only guests in the first half of december, so we were luckky and got the top room with a private terrace for a few dollars more than the other rooms. It certainly was worth it. A big, beautiful room, and no power station noice mentioned by some other reviewers (but this might be a problem depending on the room's location). Everything was clean and in good working order. No mosquito screen on the wndows, but amazingly there were no mosquitos despite being in the middle of a rain forest.
The warm water pools are very relaxing and get cleaned daily.
Food was nice, making use of locally and seasonally available stuff. A great idea. Not a big choice on the menu, not five star cooking, a bit pricey, but all in all pleasant. Service staff was wonderful, one waitress in particular really professional.
The Garden is wonderful, truely amazing flowers, and the garden tour guide quite knowledgeable. Just a pity that the map for the self-guided garden tour is not up-to-date (the numbers are in the wrong places).
The only thing we did regret was the khaki green colour of the buildings (for a "better integration" in the surroundings). They look like army baracks. A strong blue would create a nice contrast with the greenery. One cannot hide buildings, even with camoufflage paint! so let's see them, and make them look nice (architect speaking).
It's not a cheap place, adding up the cost for the room and the food. But it's worth staying at the Papillote for a couple of nights.

“Perfect peace in a beautiful environment”

We arrived from Barbados, which is where we live and most people think of as Paradise, but Papillote is truly the Garden of Eden. Built into the slope of a green mountain, it has few enough rooms that you can feel alone if you want to, while the restaurant is intimate enough that you can talk to other guests if you feel like it. The owner eats in her own restaurant from time to time, and exudes warmth and welcome, as do all the staff. The food is wholesome and plentiful, not fancy cuisine but all of it freshly sourced. The room we had was a double leading onto a patio with an incredible view down the valley. The temptation was just to sit there all day - retreating inside when rain periodically swept across - and stare at the hills and the forest. The hillside looks like an unmoving mass of green until you really watch it, when you can see the endless quivering of branches and falling of leaves. But we made ourselves get up and go for walks in the surrounding countryside - there's a beautiful waterfall, a tourist spot, just yards away, and all sorts of places to walk to within easy reach - and then we'd lie in one of the four natural mineral hot pools right there in the hotel garden. After we'd been there a day, we got into a routine of bathing in one of these as soon as we woke up and last thing at night - especially as the water in the room comes from the same source and takes ages to run hot, and I hate cold showers. But the pools were more fun, espcially the one at the end of the garden under the hotel's own waterfall. My verdict after 5 days? I could have stayed for ever.

“Rustic Elegance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2010

Stayed at Papillote Wilderness Retreat for three nights with my husband. We had a wonderful time. The grounds of Papillote with the plants and the hot springs are well worth the stay, really spectacular. The food is great, each night the menu changes. An added plus is each evening at dinner you most likely will see and chat with Anne Bastiste the owner. All the staff are pleasant and helpful. You would do well to chose Papillote, not only is this a great stay but the location is perfect for seeing most of Dominica, Trafalgar Falls is just around the corner.
