“Beautiful view but problems”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2007

The Stonedge cabins are located on an amazing cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The amenities are basic but adequate, about what you would expect for the price. Didier, the owner, is a friendly guy who is willing to give advice on where to go and how to get there. Dinah, his girlfriend (?) seems genuinely nice. If you are on an extremely limited budget, Stonedge is an option you probably shouldn't overlook. That is the good, here is the bad.
First, the tours...
We chose to stay at Stonedge to take advantage of the cheap tours offered by the owner, Didier. We inquired ahead of time to insure that guided tours would be available during our stay. However, every morning but one we were informed that there would be no tours that day. The one morning when there was a tour we were told that it was going to the north end of the island. Since we were staying in the north for the last days of our trip, we decided not to go. We found out later that Didier changed his mind, without telling us, and took the group to see waterfalls on the southern side of the islands. Other reviews indicate that Didier provides a free tour on Tuesdays -- this appears to no longer be the case.
Second, the mosquitoes...
There are no mosquito nets provided at Stonedge and the cottages get hot hot hot at night. Unless you want to broil, you keep the windows open at night. As a result, our nights were spent hiding under a sheet, listening to the mosquitoes buzzing around our heads. When and if we finally managed to fall asleep, we woke up with itchy bites all over legs, face, arms, ect. After requesting a mosquito net, we were offered bug spray. I was, however, reluctant to spray Deet over my face before sleep -- more bites.
Third, the food...
Dinners cost start at $10 and go up from there. For this price you can get a salad consisting of mostly cabbage or "spaghetti" a.k.a. ramen instant noodles. It's not that the food is really bad (though it's not good) but it's a lot to pay for instant noodles. Breakfasts were a better deal.
Fourth, the location...
Driving ourselves around the island, we found that Salisbury is pretty far from virtually anything on the island you'd want to see. Trafalgar Valley (Boiling Lake hike, Titou Gorge, Trafalgar falls, Middleham falls, ect.) is a 45-60 minute drive, Victoria falls, Champagne Beach, Scotts Head are even further. If you make this your home base on vacation, plan on spending at least 2 hours a day getting to and from where you want to go.
Fourth the company...
Meeting fellow travelers has been one of the highlights of traveling in my experience, and I wish I spoke more languages to broaden the number of travelers I could communicate with. However, I am not fluent in French and I found this to be pretty socially isolating at Stonedge. During our stay, all but one of the other guests spoke almost exclusively in French and the owner concentrated virtually all of his time and attention on those guests. As a result, my boyfriend and I often found ourselves alone at a small table while the rest of the guests socialized a few feet away. I don't really blame the owners for this -- though they could have made some effort to include us -- but it was a bummer. If you are primarily an English speaker, this is something you may want to keep in mind. The island is primarily English speaking and you'll probably be able to meet more people at other guest houses.

“Stonedge Revisited”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2007

I stayed at Stonedge Hotel Jan 20-28 '07. It was my second stay at this hotel. I would happily go back today. At Stonedge you can expect basic, rustic accommodation. Water conservation is a must at this hotel so it is not the best choice for two shower a day people. Bring bio degradable soap and try a river bath. The food at Stonedge was always good. On both my stays I requested things that where not on the menu (pizza - pumpkin soup) and Didier (owner) gladly obliged. I found the location of the hotel to be good for discovering the Island. Although the bus runs by the main road I would recommend a rental vehicle for your stay.

  • Liked — Wecoming host and the mountain lodge feel.

“Fantastic place.... but, snobs and maniacs not welcome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2006

At $16.50 US per night each person, Stonedge is the best value on Dominica, in the opinion of a second time visitor to the island. Didier is a dedicated, accommodating and attentive host, one who is always willing to provide service to all his guests, in any way he possibly can. As the Stonedge website advises "snobs and maniacs not welcome". At this price, one should not expect amenities available at The Ritz. What you will get is a clean, well equipped but rustic simple cottage with the best breezes and sunset views available anywhere in the Caribbean. Stonedge is in a very safe neighbourhood, has a free miniature golf course, lovely gardens and, most of all, peace and quiet. Didier's free tour on Tuesdays is what you'd pay $60 US per person for if booked with a tour operator.... fantastic. Do not question that it really is "free", it truly is! Didier takes one day off a week, Tuesdays, and likes to get away from the house to hike or visit other areas in the country to help him regroup and unwind. He loves having guests along for company. His cooking is not "fine cuisine" but, again, for the prices charged, "you get what you pay for". With no restaurants close by, even having a restaurant open and available for breakfasts and suppers every day shows Didier's dedication to his guests. Regarding the comments made by a guest who stated "Didier wanted to save the water".... only those who respect the scarcity of rain water during the Caribbean dry season can appreciates how difficult it is to supply ample water to all guests. We would have extended our 2 night stay by a few more days had we not already paid for our next accommodation ahead of time. Stonedge would not be an acceptable place for anyone wanting and expecting to "dress for dinner" but the most wonderful place for those budget travellers who appreciate a place of this high calibre at such a reasonable rate. Hats off to Didier for his committment to his guests. V & L, Canadian gals, April 10 & 11, 2006.

“Excellent place to have a rest!!!”

Thanks Didier for your welcome.
I really enjoyed my time in this so special place. The bungalows are nice, well equipped (shower and toilet in each bungalow) and the view is priceless...
Thanks also Didier to give me a ride to "Chez La Doudou" (great place to Dive) and to take me back. He's definitely not a "lazy host". He knows good places in the island and won't hesitate to share them with you.
I hope you'll enjoy the photos.
