We could not have picked a better place to start our visit to Dominica. The owners/managers of the Sea View Apartments (Chris and Linda Lervon) made us feel comfortable from first contact to last. They demonstrated genuine interest in all of their guests and guided us on each of our day's excursions making recommendations that fit our lifestyle and our abilities.
Each morning and night we ate at the Bamboo Restaurant and had the opportunity to discuss our plans. The food was good, the drinks were great. We had the opportunity to try local fare, including Sorrel Juice which is a must to try!
During our stay, Linda and Chris recommended two different local guides who were both fabulous. We spent 8 hours with both Webster and Stephen and learned more about the island, the flora and fauna, than we would have otherwise. Both showed patience and interest in what we wanted to see and do and ensured that we had successful days.
Our accomodations were clean and well kept; our only personal issue was we are used to a Kingsize bed and a standard bed is not comfortable for us. However, it was minor compared to the fabulous view of the Atlantic and the breeze that made sleeping comfortable (a huge worry before the trip).
I came to Dominica with enough insect repellent to hold off an airforce of mosquitos. During our stay, we toured rainforests, craters, and beaches. The only insects we came in contact with were some ants and one mosquito in 9 days in February. We kept the doors open whenever we were awake to enjoy the ocean breeze.
Calibisie is a great place to start in Dominica. There are many restaurants, grocery stores. There is an ATM machine and a gas station. This cannot be said of all towns in Dominica so it was a good transition place for us. (Obviously, the city of Portsmouth and Roseau also have all expected conveniences!).
We cannot wait to travel back to Dominca. The pepole are friendly and helpful. We spent an incredible afternoon at Melvina's Roadside Restaurant (just north of Champagne Bay). We met many Dominican's, some who were visiting from their homes across the world. The welcome and openess shown was unequaled in any other place in the world we have visited. We were invited to tour one of the homes and asked to stay for dinner and drinks. Melvina's is known across the island as a place to party on Friday and Saturday night (Friday young group, Saturday 40+ crowd).
So if you go..be sure to find Melvina's and ask for Chicken and Bakes!
A challenge on the island is driving. The driving is on the left and there are no lines on the road. It takes a bit getting used to as the roads in some spots are not wide enough for 2 cars to pass at the same time. Along with that, the rainy season creates pot holes in the roads that need to be dodged when driving.
