“Trupial Inn”

After the flooding the whole place has been updated quite nicely. At arrival however it was not indicated where the reception was located, luckily some other quests told me. I didn't really feel welcome at the reception and after having dinner (which was quite good) I couldn't book the food on the room. Also I couldn't pay with card and they couldn't change cash; the staff was not really in the mood for helping me and it was more my problem than theirs.

The breakfast was very limited, very little choice, bread still cold from the freezer, no butter and an extreme lot of flies. For 15 dollars you can have a very complete breakfast in one of the many restaurants in town.

For me the last time that I will visit it

“Nice resort in urban area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

I was rather desperate in getting a last-minute deal and my travel agent recommended this hotel/ resort in the urban area of Willemstad. I booked a Deluxe room for two persons for 7 nights.
The entrance and many other parts of the resort are still under construction as the area got flooded more than a year ago and ever since a lot of work has been put into rebuilding the resort. And the owner can be proud of the results so far: it all looks pretty new and fresh.
Housing on the resort consists of small blocks of four rooms (all on ground floor level) and all have a small veranda on the front. The room itself consists of a queen size bed, large tv set with plenty of channels, a shower and toilet and a separate sink (why not placed in the shower?) and a microwave, refrigerator and water cooker. Cleaning services were ok, but apparently not according to a regular check list (complimentary teabags and coffee was not restocked, floor cleaning not on a regular basis).
As I had breakfast included in my deal I got to have my breakfast at the restaurant area. A nice mix of continental breakfast and a local touch (all kinds of chicken dishes). In general the breakfast buffet is ok, but don't expect any surprises. Personnel could be more service-oriented. Service with a smile so to say. The smile was missing at times. It seemed work, not a passion to serve the customers.
I soon found out that the resort is also frequently used by airline personnel. And since the resort wasn't fully booked there was little way to avoid their conversations about work and work-related issues.
The shuttle services provided by the hotel to the city centre and the beach (Seaquarium beach) was ok.
In the near vicinity there are plenty of bars and restaurants (Japanese, Indonesian, Chinese) if you want to skip the rather expensive hotel restaurant. Zuikertuintje and Bloempot shopping malls provide for some shopping (hi-end shopping) and restaurants.

“More than expected fro the rate taken”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2010

Sure this is not a very luxury Hotel but for the price less than US$ 100 it is a great deal.
The location of course it is not in the downtown, but it feels great when you want to have relax and privacy with your partner.
Decoration of rooms are niceand integrated to the enviroment.
Service is of course the best.
Please dont forget to ask for dishes options at restaurant. They deserve the wait !

“Not impressed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 May 2010

I went with my husband on a business trip to Curacao, this hotel was prebooked by the agent. It would not have been my choice and wasn't when we returned again on business a month later. Breakfast costs $15 each, cereal, fruit, omelete, coffee, fruit juice. One evening there was a BBQ with an open salad bar, your choice of chicken or fish was cooked to order. the food was very good, but you will find good food in any restaurant all over the island. We had a small refridgerator in our room, a few times we choose to visit the supermarket across the main road and buy salad, wine & beer, to eat on our veranda. One thing i did not like was the amount of bugs in the room, cockroaches, beetles and other little buggers that could run very fast,we were also getting eaten alive by the mosquitos, we bought sprays and repellent and lathered our selves in cream to no avail. The people in the next apartment told me they had seen a rat, the hotel called out an exterminator. One day i went to the pool at 2pm and was told i couldnt use the loungers as they were setting up the tables for dinner around the pool area. The pool is in need of repairs, Each apartment is in cottage style houses in rows of 6, they look very quaint, but the walls are very thin to the point were you can hear your neighbour in the bathroom. Staff are friendly, bedding is clean. You will need to hire a car as this hotel is far away from everything.. a taxi will cost $20 to take you to town or the beach. The supermarket is closed on Sundays, casino is open everyday

“Not a good location”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2008

The Trupial is far from downtown Willemstad, situated in a bland suburban neighborhood. My biggest complaint was that you were dependent on staff van runs or taxis to get downtown. We later discovered our way with the local buses, but the inconvenience was too great. Instead, we checked out and went to Hotel Otrabanda, which was a better location and a bit friendlier too.

Despite giving a three day advance notice we were going to cut our 14 day booked stay short, we had problems checking out, since we were told no one had recorded our notice and thus we would be charged the full 14 days. After protesting, we managed to straighten this out, but it left a sour taste.

Physically the Trupial is OK and the waitstaff especially helpful. But I got the sense it is set up more for gambling package tours, where an all-contained environment for casino goers would be acceptable. Not the ideal place to stay if you want to see the rest of Curacao unless you rent a car.
