“Very good hotel”

Good resort. Beautiful and clean! Provides free bus tickets and a free beach card. There is also a small bus that drives you to the supermarket and back (free). Staff is very kind and helpfull. Breakfast is expensive but good. Close to the beach. We had an air conditioning that was very cold while it stood on, but the windows don't have any glass. So when you turn it off it gets bloody hot within an hour. This is not so mucht fun while trying to sleep. They do provide you with a mozzy net.
It is a great resort for families with children.

Room Tip: Ask a room on a corner. they have much space.

“A great place to stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2010

Chogogo is a large, beautifully landscaped and maintained resort catering to an upscale Dutch clientele(not necessarily us). It’s located about 10 miles east of Williamsted in a high rent neighborhood on Jan Thiel Bay.
As it is not located directly on the water, don’t expect any grand oceanic vistas. You’ll have to settle for immaculate landscaping. Prices start at $135/night for a studio with a kitchenette. They also have duplexes and whole houses. Expect prices to be high in the winter and mid-summer “high” seasons.
The girls up front were VERY courteous, friendly, and helpful and went out of their way to help us with a couple of special requests.
The restaurant/bar has decent (if not slightly overpriced) food. The "bitterballen" are a must appetizer you have to try. We're more into local food and generally went out for meals if we didn't cook in the room.
We were there in July and the three pools were filled with families on mid-summer vacation. A bit noisy, but no big deal. There was room for all. Extra towels are available outside the office.
Jan Thiel Beach is just a 5 minute walk down the street and is shared by several other resorts as well as the general public (who pay a couple dollars to get in). Nice place, though not a "true beach" with sand right down to the water's edge as one might expect. There is a concrete break wall and a "launch area" instead. There’s a bar, restaurant, and a few shops to relieve you of your burdensome cash. One night a week(?), the beach hosts “Happy Hour” (as do many along the way) which made it a hassle to get past the sizable traffic jam to get up to the resort. A warning would have been nice.
One "problem" is that the A/C is tied to a motion sensor and timer that only allows it to run when it detects your presence. That doesn't really help on hot nights when you're asleep. But when presented with the problem, they explained that it's to prevent the A/C from being left on all day when guest go out(the studios have louvers only, not glass windows) and that they could by-pass the system if we promised to be sure to turn the unit off when we were away and keep the room buttoned up when the A/C was running. We did and they did. It was already done by the time we went back to our room. So it worked out fine.
Overall, it’s a great place to stay albeit a bit pricey for us. But as a splurge, it’s well worth it.

“Chogogo Resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 April 2010

This resort has both apartments and bungalows. Both are normal sized. The area is located near the sea and beach. Hotel has his own restaurant where theme nights are arranged. Off course suggested to eat outside were you can taste the local dishes.

“The Good and the Bad in Chogogo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2009

I chose this hotel for a 4 day stay with spouse and 4-year old son, using Google Earth and seeing it was close to what appeared to be a nice family beach (Jan Thiel Beach). We stayed in a one bedroom unit on ground level close to the pool and reception which was nice (unit #2001). I will summarize my stay as the following:

THE GOOD:
1) Beautiful grounds, lush Caribbean vegetation and very well kept overall. Buildings were colorful and gorgeous
2) Pretty decent pool although with similar levels so watch our with small children: it is very easy to fall over from the kiddie (wading) pool to the lower-leveled intermediate depth pool, but you will first land hard on tiles that are about 2 feet high in between these 2 pools. Just watch small kids and it'll be o.k.
3) They offer several kinds of pool toys, inflatables, etc.
4) The room was very spacious and had a lovely balcony
5) Air conditioned worked fine...only after calling maintenance and a guy simply turned a screw or something that kept our A/C OFF THE MOTION SENSOR during our entire stay. We had read about the motion sensor on previews reviews here, and they also have a 1 page instruction sheet about the AC and how it works next tl the bed. Even after following all instructions, it wouldn't turn on. So after the fixed it and got it off the sensor, we would just turn it on while insede our unit and off before leaving. Simple enough.
6) Units have a big refrigerator, not a minifridge
7) Checking out was a breeze
8) Jan Thiel Beach has a nice kiddie saltwater pool park with water tubes and slides. You enter free as guests of the Chogogo. There are a few restaurants on the beachfront

THE BAD:
1) No microwave in the kitchen, but in spite of this it is well equipped with most things you need
2) No hair dryer in the bathroom
3) I had never seen such an awkward bathroom anywhere else and it would account for me saying I may choose never to return again to this resort. if you open the bathroom door, you will lose half of the space inside the bathroom. The shower doors are made of formica and there is an ample space between the bathroom floor and the shower wall and door, and if you additionally have half an inch of a difference in height between the bathroom and shower floors, it is easy to visualize what happens when you take a shower: you will have water all over your bathroom and you must use a floor towel each time someone showers! It will even reach your toilet...so I ended up doing house chores and cleaning the small, uncomfortable bathroom 3 times a day, i.e., each time we showered.
4) Housecleaning is twice a week. We arrived Fri., and left Mon (4 days and 3 nights) and did not have our room cleaned once (I guess BOTH days they clean are between Mon-Thurs??)
5) Jan Thiel Beach is at least 20 minutes DOWNHILL from the resort and is NOT an easy walk if you have kids..we actually drove there and this was much easier. It is practically an ARTIFICIAL beach because thy've created concrete floors that overlook the beautiful but ROCKY "beach", with only a small area with real sand. But hence, it has a staircase that makes getting into the water easier for kids, and there are all types of beautiful fish you can see from outside the water so if you enjoy this, be sure to have a mask and have fun. You will find a lot of rocks and shells in the bottom so also use WATER SHOES if you can or you will be miserable. This beach has more than an ADULT ambience than it is for kids, and I guess the only thing good for small ones is the kiddie pool in the back.
6) We were told that if we arrived before 3 pm and a room was available, they would allow an early check in. We got there at noon and they told us to return at 3 pm. When we arrived, our unit was not ready until almost 4 pm
7) They gave us a small cot for our son, that turned out to be so rigid he ended up sleeping in our bed, which was big enough for the 3 of us and comfortable.

Although my experience overall was pretty nice at this resort, I would probably try another hotel next time in Curacao. For us, the bathroom scene was more than enough! I must admit on the outside is is one of the most beautiful we've seen, but...we'll definitely try another place next time. There is a new resort, the Morena Resort (www.morenaresort.com), that offers rooms more or less for the same price as Chogogo (and also less expensive than Papagayo and Livingstone Jan Thiel Resort), that may be a better choice.

“We loved the Chogogo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2008

We just returned from our stay at the Chogogo, and really enjoyed it. We had the three bedroom cottage overlooking the ocean, beautiful!
The cottage was clean and efficient and contained everything we needed. Staff was friendly and helpful.
We were there in low season, so no screaming children anywhere.
I would definitely return to this resort!
