A good friend and I decided to get away to Cuba April 9th-16th, 2011. We found a great deal to Varadero from Calgary ($715/week,all inclusive, normally I think it's about $1200/week, all inclusive) so off we went to have a relaxing holiday!!!
So fun... it was the perfect trip. The hotel is not fancy but it had everything we needed, mojito bar, stunning beach accross the street, friendly staff and a laid back enviroment. We mostly ate at the buffet as we're not really time oriented people and the other restaurants took reservations. Also I think the food was tastier at the buffet from the few times we ate else where. As I am assuming has been written before, the food was slightly boring but there was plenty of selection, excellent service with our meals and we were content. Breakfast was the best meal of the day! I would reccommend bringing snacks if you like chips, cookies, candy etc as these are hard to find.
The room was average, just the basics but we were barely there. We had a really pretty view of the sun setting in the evening as we enjoyed our 7 year Havana Club rum on ice out on the patio (this was $11 for a 26oz... sweet price!) We always had towels, usually shaped like a cute animal and we very happy with the cleaning staff. There was a hilarious closet in the hallway that would randomly leak water all over... weird, but I think that's just Cuba! I peeked in it one day to learn it was a big pipe that gushed water from the ceiling into a low basin (with a drain) every now and then, ummmm interesting. I found this entertaining, some might not.
ahhh now the BEACH! SOOOOO the most beautiful, amazing place I have ever been. I have travelled different resort holidays quite a few times but Varadero has captured my HEART. So peaceful and calming, the water is crystal clean, beach is soft white sand and you can walk for miles. This was why I came to Cuba! We pretty much lived at the beach or in the water everyday, with 35C and clear skies where else would you want to be? Doesn't hurt to have a snack bar, COLD rum and beer and a ocean view massage therapist within a 2 min walk!
The swimup pool bar was a great place to socialize and say hello to people we would meet over the week. We usually would enjoy "last call" pool side, in the same spot everyday and people would come by to say hi, see what was going on in the evening. The guests seemed on average to be about our age or a little older, maybe 25-55, we were 32 so it was a good mix. Mostly Canadians and Europeans. We found the hotel guests, the week we were there anyway, very friendly. You could do your own thing though, there were just oppertunities to socialize. Not very many children or families. I wouldn't take kids to this hotel, more a fun friends or couple get away. There wasn't alot for kids to do
Night life is really fun, great bars, easy to get around and we felt very safe going out at night. Our hotel was within walking distance to Calle 63, Comparsita and LaBamba. They we're all fun but different. We usually stayed at our Lobby Mojito Bar til midnight then went out after that.
All in all the Hotel was nice, like I've said not fancy, but the beach really made it perfect for us. I would stay here again! SO FUN.
