“The Rude Staff and Smell Ruined this Hotel For Us!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

After close to two weeks travelling through Cuba we went to Varadero

for three
nights to end our trip and fly home. When we first got to the hotel it was
fine; clean, staff were pleasant, nice beach, for the price and location buffet was as expected.
We expected the same for our three days there.

We headed to the buffet for a late lunch and not bad, carving station with roast
pork and hamburgers, pasta, fruit, salad, the usual. The dinner was a completely
different affair, no carving station and left over food from lunch. I am not
sure they even changed anything just topped up what was left over and removed
the carving station attendant.

After a few drinks at the bar chatting with the others staying we headed to
bed. Decent enough beds, again for the price this is a cheap hotel, but in the middle of the night the
SMELL. We were both woken up at about 3:00AM due to the smell. It was so bad
at first I thought it must be a gas leak in the room but it was worse outside.
This lasted for a couple of hours before we could get back to sleep with
headaches. The next morning we had to open both the sliding door to the balcony
and the entrance door to try and air the room out.

Day two we only had a small breakfast which was okay, then a nice relaxing day
at the beach and a walk to the market. Did not eat lunch or dinner at Club
Tropical as there was nothing appetizing and no fresh food or carving station to be
had. We asked about a massage appointment at the Front Desk and the women just
looked at us like we were stupid with one questioning word "massage?". I guess
the sign and information brochure was incorrect but were made to feel like this was our fault for
reading their offerings. That night sitting outside with other guests the smell
of gas came back, this time around 10:00PM. When we first asked what it was the
bar staff advised they couldn't smell anything and advised it was just someones
lighter... The women at the Front Desk was much more honest and this is when we
found out it was the oil refinery 20 km's away. She advised it was worse for the
locals who lived closer to the refinery year round. The smell lasted about an
hour this night.

We were up early to go on a boat trip on day three, which was great. When we
returned to Club Tropical the staff jumped all over us and very loudly advising
we were to check out immediately as we only paid for two nights. They were
incredibly rude, which for us was quite embarrassing due to the way they were
speaking to us in front of the other guests. When they realized the error was
theirs we did not receive any apology, all we wanted was sorry our mistake you
have paid for three nights. When we spoke to the manager on duty advising we
paid for three nights he was just as rude. At least this night there was no gas
smell

I did not expect much due to the price, just a clean room, beach access and
service. Due to the service of the staff I cannot recommend this hotel along
with the gas smell. Stay somewhere else, there is better for the same price
range in Varadero.

nice place, 2 and a haft star rating,as good as any $60.00 a night hotel i,ve ever been in.
staff are a little older, and have been there for a very long time.
some of the staff speak very good english, like Maddie the bartender, she is very nice, and has a 14 yr old daughter at home, and there is Jowell the pool guy that speaks purfect english,he very helpful and has a 10yr old daughter that he brings on the weekends when she not in school.
my hotel maid was Duian she didn't speak very much english, she did a great job and never touched anything she shouldn't.
location was in the heart of varadero,at 21 street,on first ave., there are open air craft markets all around, i recomend William across the street at the market, he speaks perfect english and french,he is jewellery maker, and is very happy to talk to you,he has a 7yr old daughter that he is alway looking for cloths for.
also special mention goes to Omar at the 15 street market,he sell wooden crafts, and he can speak perfect english /french he is a great resorce and will be happy to talk to you
the buffet had about 10 items, about as good as any hospital cafiteria, but they had wonderful bread, the french quasants, where wondeful, note they always had A1 sauce there so i could spice up everything..

Room Tip: 2nd floor ,there is no elevator

Great beach , poor food, staff not friendly except some guys but overall ok for a cheap price. The bad thing is that we could book this hotel only for all-inclusive. Very bad products quality, you have to go out for dinner definitely. If you respect yourself...

“Great Location.....Great Service....Great Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

We booked the trip thru Nolitours as a family vaction and ened up paying just over 5 hundred per person including taxes for 6 people and 2 room's, getting there was all fine but arriving to the hotel at 1 am was a bit tiresome, we got 2 rooms side by side with a street view but were hoping for pool view. So I went to the front desk and asked if they could change us and they said that tomorrow as they were already full.

So after sleeping the nite I decided to see if we could get another room so it would be more comfortable with 2 people instead of 3 per room, I was adivised by the front desk that if I did it thru them that it would be 90 cuc's per nite but to get our Nolitour rep to do it, she came and we booked a couple tours thru her and I than asked if it was possible to add an extra room, to my surprise she came back and said yes and that the cost was $192 Canadian for the week so I jumped and took it, so after all this was done we ended up with 3 poolside rooms the next day....Perfect!!!....But get this....Appently when I paid the rep the $192 Canadian I was feeling a little good on the rum that I accidently gave her $292 as I had brand new bills and the hundreds stuck together and I had no ideas to what I had done....The next day I had to sign papers with the Nolitour rep as they called this a booking change and she gave me back the $100 that I over payed....I was blown away by her HONESTY!!!!!!

I won't go into great depth about the food beacause it is basically the same everywhere, but you wont go hungry here, omletes every morning, burgers and fries at the snack bar at lunch, a nice assortment at the buffet for all meal's, if you want a taste from home do what my kids did.. they brought syrup and other stuff they enjoyed.

The location is perfect....Right on the beach and in the middle of it all!!! ....There is a market to the right and to the left in view across the street, many small places to grab a burger, ice cream, and the Casa Del La Meil is a couple blocks away were you cant go wrong were you get a large pizza and 2 drinks for 5.50 cuc's.

Hotel service is great...to me if you treat people with respect and dignity they will do the same back, Yes you are on vaction but they are only human and can only do with what they are given...don't forget you are in Cuba.

Overall... for the money spent to have a great time with my family and to see the kids have a smile on there face, with the service recieved and honesty of the Nolitour rep......PRICELESS
