We last minute booked a trip to this resort, we paid $1400 as a couple, so the price was the deciding factor. Given that it was such a good price I was not expecting 5 star quality. Overall, it was a decent resort if you have low expectations. The food was very good for Cuban standards. We found the 24 hour bar a good place to relax, have a few drinks and something to eat. The Italian restaurant was also a good choice. The beach was very beautiful and had plenty of chairs to avail of. We did have one major issue, my travel agent suggested that we pay a little extra and reserve a room in the main building as the south section is in need of renovations and is much further from the beach. When we arrived we were given a room in the south section, I informed the lady at the front desk of the mistake and she told me they were full and couldn't do anything to accomodate us even though we had paid extra. When we finally arrived at our room which was right at the fence by the main road, we were less than impressed. The room was very old and dated, there were little ants everywhere, and the door to our room barely closed and locked. The next morning we met with our sunwing representative and we expressed our concerns with the room especially when we had paid for a different section. He was very helpful and in the end we were upgraded to the suite at no additional cost due to the fact that they were unable to provide us with the room type we paid for. This room was excellent and exceeded our expectations, so a negative was turned into a positive. However, we did not like the night life of the resort. There was very poor lighting on the grounds, it was very dark and somewhat errie at night. We opted to mainly stay in our room and just went to the lobby bar for drinks. it was a very large resort with lots of day time options . The poolside activities during the day were entertaining. We didn't spend alot of time on the resort itself as we did excursions just about every day. I would highly recommend if going to Havana that you do the Tropicana show. It was by far the highlight of the trip for us. For us, the resort was a place to relax and sleep in between excursions and for those purposes, it was perfect. If you are planning to mainly stay on the resort for the duration of your vacation, then I would recommend paying the extra and going to a different place. It was not my first time in Varadero and it was not the nicest resort out of all the places I've stayed. For the price and what we needed, it was fine but its not a place I would choose to stay at again.
