“couple of tips”

Our first holiday in Cuba. Lovely people - very friendly, unlike some parts of the Caribbean that can feel threatening at times. The hotel was fine and the location can't be beat.It is close to town (what there is of it ),many flea markets and reasonably priced eating places within five minutes walk, fabulous beach. From what I could see, if you stay at the hotels out on the peninsula you have nowhere to go outside your hotel except the beach unless you take a bus ( $5.00 per day ) or taxi. The first of the tips - do not do, as I did, change your currency at the front desk. I changed $600 and received a bit over 500 pesos in return, instead use the little one-room bank in the hotel. Far, far better rate. Second tip - If you take a ride in one of the horse-drawn buggy's as we did the driver will show you the price printed on the back of the cart, this is not the price you will pay. This is the price PER PERSON , which makes a difference if you are a family of six and the price you see is $10. Finally , on the subject of tips - tip EVERYBODY, they are paid so little and even one peso is accepted with gratitude.Think of it as making up for the great bargain that is Cuba.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the pool area can be noisy as the entertainment on stage is just behind it.

“Hotel OK but when the wind drops at night....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

We survived our first 2 days here quite well, the food was OK, the pool area clean and grounds, and the dance group was better than the Tropicana in Havana for dancing, not so showy but great dancers. We thought we had chosen well for a couple of cheap nights to get used to the heat. But during the day, the wind blows from the NE, on shore. When the wind drops at night, a thick fowl smell from an oil processing plant creeps into the area, and nothing we tried could keep it out of our room. Damp towels over the floor drains, windows shut, plugs in the bath and sink. My partner developed a headache; I gaged all night. On asking about it at the frontdesk in the morning, they explained that they no longer smelt it. This is the kind of smell that causes miscarriges in cattle in northern Alberta. Someone in the Cuban central planning department needs a head examine. We walked east up the beach, asking people if they smelt it the night before. Unfortunately their reports were variable, and I think unreliable due to volume of rum consumed as "night caps". Perhaps we should have got plastered too to survive our second night. We departed for Trinidad by Visazul bus early the next morning.

Room Tip: Maybe try jamming tee shirts in door air vents. Or bring carbon face mask to sleep at night.

Your better off with a hammock, bug net,and a gas mask. The rooms suck ;unless you like springs, in your back.Don't bother asking for a blanket to thickin it up'they won't sell you one.Rooms are very damp and moldy ,0nly heating source is the hair dryer in which ran 24|/7.to keep out th mosquitos that love damp and moldy areas such as swamps. No hot water ;No drain for the bath.No room service, loud all day,all night on microphones,The front reception, are complete rip offs, there skeem is on phone calls, computer cards, and money exchange.2 pesos a minute times 10 does not equal 45;two times they tried to pull on me.i asked public relations for a blanket in spanish ,english ,and french. after I wrote it down in spanish.she replied she'd have to speek to her manager.who came out a stared at me and said that it would not be possible .The food is better in the army,My dog eats better,There is no ventilation ,and opening window is not an option due to the oil refineries blowing diesel fumes into your zero star room,The place will take a month of your life ,save yourself and your children don't go.STILL SICK

Room Tip: STAY HOME stay in hammock,or stay at home

“One of the best in Varadero”

Two well-travelled middle aged couples from the prairies stayed here in January. We found the service excellent, and the food very good. The wonderful beach begins on the edge of the property. Although our beds were definitely not $1000.00 mattresses, the rooms were more than adequate. The entertainment was good, especially the terrific dance troupe. We would recommend this hotel to all those who can adopt the mantra "relax, this is Cuba". By the way, we left Varadero at 24 above, and arrived in Regina to 28 below - what a shock!

Stayed here when we got bumped from another resort last minute. It was not our choice but we made the best of it. 11 of us total went. Some of us had oceanview rooms book at other resort and paid more but since there were no oceanview rooms here we did not get one and did not get compensation.

Not much happening other than bingo...Celine Dion played over and over. Equipment for sports like polo but when asked the staff wouldnt help. There were more interested in hitting on women or trying to sell cigars. The male staff were too pushy, wouldnt take no for an answer. Made me very uncomforable. Food was not great.

Beach was nice but too windy to swim many days. Pools very cold. Rooms were clean, nothing fancy but everything we needed.
