Along with a large group of friends, we had a generally OK stay at the Costa Morena in late-Jan 2012. The staff was friendly but not overly helpful, unless tipping generously.
No sand beach on the premises, but the natural basin was OK for basic snorkeling (footwear recommended against urchins!). Large waves and rocks made it hazardous to swim outside this basin. However, a small beach exists 400m east along the shores. Walking over, the locals often nagged us for money, clothing and gifts. The water was a bit murky, making for average underwater visibility when snorkelling.
Rooms were better in the 500s and 600s, as some other blocks had major ant infestations, with folks get bit through the night. We did have some smaller ants and got some bites, and saw a large cockroach in our bathroom; similar-class resorts have the same issues.
The somewhat limited buffet was rarely open on time, very repetitive, slow to replenish. Sought-after items disappeared very quickly and often did not get served again (fresh fish, bananas, orange juice, ice cream, etc). Most people in our group of 30 suffered digestion problems, some fully knocked-out despite no alcohol abuse. I drank the tap water and did not seem to be affected, though felt queasy after one meal later in our stay.
Many older men accompanied by their Cuban "girlfriends" stay there, it's not a place for kids. Evening shows seem to cater to that group, focussing on skimpy-dressed dancers and fashion displays, fairly amateurish overall.
Bottomline: we got what we paid for, but I would go to a more upscale resort next time.
