My husband and I moved to this hotel after a disappointing 3 night stay at another hotel in the Havana area. We were very pleased. The rooms are bright, spacious and very clean. The maids were creative with their towel art and I looked forward each day to the next creation. The food in the buffet was fine during breakfast, and the 2 times we ate dinner there, it was also quite fine. Selection is very good, food hot and fresh. We did not eat in the a la cartes, so I cannot comment. The snack bar was OK also. Having the onsite Cadeca for money exchange is very convenient. The in room safe was also nice, with no charge for using it.
In previous reviews, it is noted by hotel management that they are in the process of upgrading the hotel as they have recently taken over the control of this hotel in fall of 2011. There was lots of evidence of painting and other types of maintenance. The pool is very nice. I did not use the fitness centre, but the equipment looked to be in good repair. There is a full business centre, with several computers that worked well, note however it is not open on Sundays (maybe they can change this).
We had no significant issues with elevators, all were in service while we were there. They are small however and during busy times, you can have a bit of a wait. You can always walk down the stairs, but you cannot come up them, as the doors lock from the hallway side and you cannot enter from the stairwell. In the event of a fire, you can get down, but not up, something perhaps security at the hotel should look at. There was a very obvious presence of security in the lobby.
The shuttle service for the old city leaves 4 times a day. It is about 10 CUC to take a taxi into town. Directly across the street is the supermarket, if you chose you can buy snacks, liquor and mix there to avoid the over priced lobby bar prices (2.25 CUC for a 45 cent can of soda at the lobby bar, given that, I did not even explore the other drink prices).
Overall, a great experience at this hotel. We would defintely return and would also recommend to friends. I just hope the new management will maintain the property and not let it become run down like so many other hotels in Cuba.
