“Great location and probably significantly better than many other Havana hotels.”

This was our first visit to Havana and we booked this hotel online, based on Trip Advisor reviews. All in all we thought this was a great little hotel in a fantastic location for exploring Old Havana and beyond. A point to consider when making any hotel arrangements in Havana: The hotel rates are geared towards foreign tourists, however, you're not necessarily going to get everything you would expect for the money if you were travelling to a different, more affluent country. Still, there's very few things to complain about while staying here.

Pros:
1. Great location, not just for your walking tour, but for taxi's. Old Havana is a maze of tiny streets that most cars do not or cannot get down, so at other hotels you might be dropped by a cab at a nearby location and then you have to walk the rest of the way to your hotel. With it's location on Plaza San Fancisco, every cab driver knows how to get there and you only need to walk across the square from the cab to the hotel.
2. The staff that work the bar, breakfast and late night dining area are great. Very friendly, attentive and deliver good quality service. Although the front desk service was never bad, I think the quality may vary (e.g. knowledge & advice) based on your questions and who you get.
3. Room was large, clean, had A/C, large clean and well appointed bathroom and fully stocked mini-bar with very reasonable prices. Also has both 110v & 220v outlets around the room based on where you may be visiting from and your appliances. Also a modern safe in the closet and an umbrella, should the weather turn wet.
4. Food quality and presentation was good. We had read on Trip Advisor that some guests waited a long time for breakfast. We never had this problem and enjoyed the complimentary breakfast every morning before setting out.

Cons:
1. The rooms are not especially bright. We were on the 4th floor and had a large, opening window that definitely helped. I can imagine that on lower floors the ambient light in the rooms might be pretty low and the light fixtures are certainly not high wattage.
2. A/C control on the wall takes a little science project to figure out, but works fine, if maybe a little noisey.
3. When we checked out the hotel's credit card machine was not working and so our dinner, bar and mini-bar tabs had to be settled with cash. This could have been a major inconvienience if we had been leaving the country with only enough remaining cash for a taxi and the exit tax.
4. We gave up on the internet, although there is a computer near the front of the hotel that guests can use. You need to buy a card at the front desk for $6 that you then use to get access to the internet. Once connected you can easily take a nap between each page refresh.

Room Tip: Higher floors will provide more light into the room.

This was a very nice hotel, located in a busy and interesting area near the harbour. Very pleasant rooms, exellent food and good service. Wi Fi very slow, but it works.

“Not perfect, but this is Cuba”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2011

We stayed here on a recent Nat Geo tour of Cuba. It is a recently renovated hotel, and that does show. The wi-fi is extremely slow and only works if you get close to the source. The staff seemed to know nothing about it. Some of the rooms smelled of drains. And, when it came time to check out, we had to wait while one person checked each room to make sure nothing had been taken. Needless to say, this took forever. If it rains, the courtyard, where the bar and restaurant are located, get drenched and the walkways are slippery. The rooms, like nearly all our rooms in Cuba, were dark. Bring your own reading light.

That sounds like a lot of complaining, but this was actually a great base to explore Old Havana, and that's what we were there for. The rooms were clean and attractive. The food was acceptable, and when you consider that the locals still use ration cards to get bread, you just have to be grateful for what you are served. This food certainly was better than what we got in rural Cuba, so don't get your expectations up if you are headed into the countryside.

“a good hotel in a great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

Spent two nights here when in Havana. The hotel is in a phenomenal location directly across from the old pier terminal and on one of Habana Vieja's main squares. It is within 20 minutes walk of just about any sight in old or downtown Havana. The building is beautifully restored. My room was very well appointed with comfortable beds and linens and a balcony looking out over a narrow street. The staff were generally very helpful, especially the door men/porters, who seemed to know the city very well. If there was a disappointment, it was the breakfast. It was included in our room price and included many choices. Both mornings, it was rather slow. The coffee was not as good as I had elsewhere in Cuba and the fruits and juice were far from great. The orange juice was clearly out of a box. This was surprising, given the great fruit and juices we had at other places, including private homes where supplies were harder to come by. But in a value-for-money perspective, this was a great place. Great location, clean, efficient for the price.

Room Tip: The 2nd floor rooms have nice balconies.

“It was simply devine !!”

I stayed there a solo traveller from 30 June till 6 July 2011. The hotel was opened only 7 months ago but I found everything working very well. Start with reception people and manager every one very helpful, friendly. Food quality is excellent.
The renovation of the old place was excellent and it is really wonderful boutique hotel with only 27 rooms; my rooms( a suite) was facing the Plaza and looking from the balcony it was wonderful feeling.
I cannot wait to go back to Havana and to this particularly this hotel.

Room Tip: The rooms ( in fact, all 3 suits) facing the Plaza are the best in terms of view and light.
