This was our first visit to Havana and we booked this hotel online, based on Trip Advisor reviews. All in all we thought this was a great little hotel in a fantastic location for exploring Old Havana and beyond. A point to consider when making any hotel arrangements in Havana: The hotel rates are geared towards foreign tourists, however, you're not necessarily going to get everything you would expect for the money if you were travelling to a different, more affluent country. Still, there's very few things to complain about while staying here.
Pros:
1. Great location, not just for your walking tour, but for taxi's. Old Havana is a maze of tiny streets that most cars do not or cannot get down, so at other hotels you might be dropped by a cab at a nearby location and then you have to walk the rest of the way to your hotel. With it's location on Plaza San Fancisco, every cab driver knows how to get there and you only need to walk across the square from the cab to the hotel.
2. The staff that work the bar, breakfast and late night dining area are great. Very friendly, attentive and deliver good quality service. Although the front desk service was never bad, I think the quality may vary (e.g. knowledge & advice) based on your questions and who you get.
3. Room was large, clean, had A/C, large clean and well appointed bathroom and fully stocked mini-bar with very reasonable prices. Also has both 110v & 220v outlets around the room based on where you may be visiting from and your appliances. Also a modern safe in the closet and an umbrella, should the weather turn wet.
4. Food quality and presentation was good. We had read on Trip Advisor that some guests waited a long time for breakfast. We never had this problem and enjoyed the complimentary breakfast every morning before setting out.
Cons:
1. The rooms are not especially bright. We were on the 4th floor and had a large, opening window that definitely helped. I can imagine that on lower floors the ambient light in the rooms might be pretty low and the light fixtures are certainly not high wattage.
2. A/C control on the wall takes a little science project to figure out, but works fine, if maybe a little noisey.
3. When we checked out the hotel's credit card machine was not working and so our dinner, bar and mini-bar tabs had to be settled with cash. This could have been a major inconvienience if we had been leaving the country with only enough remaining cash for a taxi and the exit tax.
4. We gave up on the internet, although there is a computer near the front of the hotel that guests can use. You need to buy a card at the front desk for $6 that you then use to get access to the internet. Once connected you can easily take a nap between each page refresh.
